I see yer points and mostly agree; but Holmes being on the Jets and his baggage has nothing to do with Marshall. Not sure why you (and many others) keep mentioning that. Yes, Marshall has baggage too, but it's currently irrelevant to Holmes and the Jets.
Christ, I wasn't comparing Holmes and Marshall's scenario's. I'm very aware of Marshall's baggage. Not making a "who's move was better" type argument. I'm not for that petty shit. Just pointing out Holmes situation in particular. My point in general was just that "baggage" will always subside a players value in this league. It's why the Patriots got Moss for a 4th round pick. But on the flip side, Jerry Jones -- Who had to give up a 1st, a 3rd, and 5th for Roy friggin Williams, who doesn't have 'baggage'. He was a Producitve player, but wasn't close to the type of talent that Moss is. Baggage is why the Jets got Holmes, a superbowl MVP in 08, for a 5th round pick. Baggage is why the Dolphins were able to get an Andre Johnson/Larry Fitzgerlad type talent in Brandon Marshall for a couple of seconds. It would take an entire draft for Arizona and Houston to even pick up the phone to have conversation for either(as they are model citizens). That's my point.
Then to argue that point: I can easily see why Holmes was traded for a 5th round pick. What I cannot understand is how his max value could have been the 157th overall pick. The fact that that any of the teams picking from 129 to 156 failed to offer that pick for a #1 WR is what is baffling to me. As I said in another thread, even if Holmes gets suspended again, you're only out that 5th round pick and what money he earned on his game cheques. There is almost no risk for it.
Uh..a couple of seconds and a 50 million dollar deal? Are you saying that was a steal? There would have been no trade without the contract.
Fin fan forgets this...Holmes is playing for a contract. Marshall is gonna make it rain with his 48 mil
Ginn was a late round pick in 2007 and happen to be picked by a moronic FO in Mueller and Camoron with the 9th overall pcik. We got good compensation for a WR who can't catch. He was traded for the simple fact that he sucks. His salary was not a factor as his base salary was something along the lines of $2.5 million this year. Gholston would be lucky to get a 7th. The guy is worthless and will be cut before he is traded.
In reality only $12.5 million of Marshall's contract is gauranteed. He has be be on the field and producing for that number to go up. So technically he hasn't hit the lotto yet. He has to earn his payday here in Miami.
The Jets fronted a significant portion of Gholston's remaining contract. I guarantee there's a 4-3 team out there that would give up a 6th or 7th for him. As far as Ginn, you can dismiss his draft status all you want when discussing compensation, but the fact remains that he cost you significant value. You got decent compensation for a shit receiver. You did NOT get decent compensation for a #9 overall pick.
Gholston's pretty much as good as any 7th rounder you'll find anyway. He'd make a great addition to any team's practice squad, especially those teams whose offense needs a boost in confidence here and there.
