The Dolphins. Ginn is a lesser player than Holmes, but they were able to get the same compensation for him.
Yeah, it's a solid trade for the 49ers. They were 23rd in the league in KR last year and dead last in punt returns. Ginn can step into the slot, return kicks and punts, and helps kill the chances of spending 1st round money on a backup RB/KR in CJ Spiller. With the rumors that Clausen may fall down the board a bit and land with the 49ers, they could be almost ready to compete like we've thought they would the past 2 seasons.
Not a believer in Alex Smith? I don't know, that team has some talent on both sides of the ball. Smith had a a decent year last year, 18 TDs, 12 INTs. The 49ers have some talent to work with, and Ginn helps. He drops a lot of passes, but he'll still be a playmaker on a team that needs some. With Crabtree entering his second year (and first training camp), Ginn adding something on special teams and sometimes at receiver, and Frank Gore at runningback, they have some weapons offensively. If Clausen is there, and they're sold he can be a franchise quarterback, they should take him. You don't pass up franchise quarterbacks. But if you have any doubts, help out your team now. The NFC West is completely up for grabs with Warner gone, and the 49ers should try to take it and help out their team and pray that Smith can get the job done. Despite the recent success of rookie QBs, it's not easy to win with one.
Decent compensation? I guess it depends on how you look at it. I look at it as a former #9 overall pick who just cost them a shitload of return value. Plus, as much of a bust as he's been, he's INFINITELY more productive than Gholston has been, and we could probably get a 6th for him.
It doesn't matter whether I believe in Alex Smith. Rumor has it the 49ers would take Clausen in a heartbeat if he fell to them. I'd assume Smith would still start this season and they'd try to build some value into him.
I agree with this (don't forget V.Davis, Mack...he's a stout weapon in their arsenal too).... SF has certainly has some weapons at the skill positions....and their defense is young and talented. Singletary is a fiery guy like Rex too....players respond positively to coaches like that....I think the Niners will be a team to watch out for in 2010.
Regardless of how Smith did last season or how well he may do this season, I think the 49ers are done with Smith. I think they'll go after a QB in the first two rounds and let him sit behind Smith. If Smith is decent then the rookie can sit behind him for a few weeks and learn. If Smith turns out to have a great year then they can tag and trade him. Either way, he's done in red and gold.
Here's the source of the Smith/Clausen story, BTW: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawaka...tm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+kawakami-me
Well, the 49ers were rumored to be in the running for Leon at one point. If true, I'm sure it was partly because they appreciated his return abilities. So that begs the question, are they now (if they ever were) no longer interested in trading for Leon?
They were looking into him but right now the question is whether or not they want to trade for a 27 year old running back coming off of a massive leg injury who cannot be completely evaluated because he cannot cut on his still-rehabilitating leg. Despite my earlier enthusiasm for a trade I don't see him bringing in much more than a 3rd, and that is if someone's draft board completely loses it's halfbacks in the first two rounds.
wow a 5th round pick is a hell of a lot better than the slightly used condom I predicted...... still the 49'ers could have got Holmes for the same pick.......... LMAO if I was a fan of 49'ers I would be scratching my head over that one!
I'm still trying to figure out how a team drafting at the bottom of the round was able to come away with that trade. Was everyone else offering up their consolation picks or was every GM picking above 19 asleep?
I was looking at it in the sense that Holmes went for a 5th, and Ginn is no Holmes (although I realize the off-field scenarios are different). For a #9 pick, Ginn was a huge disappointment. He was a 3rd WR/very good KR for Miami...roughly a 4th/5th round value, I'd think.
It really is retarded. A team needing WR help would be absolutely retarded not to take a flyer on Holmes for a 5th rounder. If Holmes keeps the reefer out of his hands that can go down as one of the biggest fleeces of all time. If he ends up getting banned again, at worst is no big deal. You can call Holmes a problem, malcontent, what have you. At the end of the day he is a football player, Ginn is just somebody getting paid to play. There is a huge difference between the 2. Ginn is eerily similar to a 1st round pick on the Jets roster.
Ya'll have to realize that the baggage that Holmes brings, in addition to the fact that he's going to miss the first month of the season, in addition to the fact that he's an unrestricted free agent after this year... Nobody was going to give anything of significance for that. Especially in this draft, which is being called the deepest in recent history. Best believe the Rooney's made feelers to all 31 teams, but no one was biting until the Jets came callin. Still was a very good trade for ya'll, as the Jets are in "fuck it we goin for it all" mode.
He'll miss the first 4, but play the last 12. In addition to that, we traded our 5th, for his final year of this contract, which isn't a lot which was actually a smart move considering a # of teams we would've had to compete against for his services, which would've meant offering a 3-5 year contract. That alone would've been a risky investment considering he has yet to prove he can stay out of trouble, but some team would've gambled for sure. Trading our 5th saves us the trouble of paying him a low amount of money on a 1-year trial basis. If he sucks/gets in trouble, no sweat off our back. We waste a 5th. If Marshall f's up, you gave up 2-2nd rounders and gave him (technically) a 3-year, 47.5M contract w/ 29M guaranteed.
Ordinarily, I would agree. For instance, I was dead set against Marshall to the Jets, even though without question he is the bigger talent. That is another discussion. You can figure out the reasons as they are embedded in my response about Holmes.......... I am not discounting any baggage. If I was a GM and could get Holmes for a 5th, it is a no brainer. You can put him in the locker room and have him there for 1 season. If he is a cancer and what not, kick him to the door and happily lose the 5th, pay the reminder of his rookie contract, without looking back. If however, you get the ever improving young player that has top 10 potential. LOL you got him for a 5th. If he meets or exceeds expectations and you give him a contract and he fucks up again, that might seem problamatic. However, with a couple of carefully written conduct clauses that becomes a non factor as well. The only issue I have, is that taking on too many NFL problem children? As I have said earlier, for all his off the field issues, to my knowledge he has never been a detriment to the team or coach on the field. He never took off plays, failed to run routes or been a huge distraction in practice. Again, this is without a lack of inside knowledge. He was on a team with many off the field issues and they made an example of the easiest of those issues. If Holmes did what Ben did ...... fahgeddaboutit. Edit: In regards to the all in mode comment...... Holmes is a 26 year old player in a position that typically ages well. So he has not entered into his prime yet. He is going to cost the Jets a 5th rounder and the reminder of a rookie contract that is cheap. Here is a checklist of an "all in" teams typical trade: [ ] The player has limited years left in the league, i.e he is old [ ] The players best years are behind him [ ] The player is an expensive rental [ ] The team had to mortgage part of their future to get him [ ] The rest of the team is old [ ] This is the teams one last shot [ ] The coaching staff is a lame duck staff [ ] The Front Office is lame duck [ ] The team needed to make a big statement [ ] Rivals were beating them to the punch [ ] The fanbase is killing management and starting to riot [ ] Front office is desperate [ ] Stupid management like the Redskins Which of any of these things is applicable to the Jets?
1. Marshall has more baggage than Holmes. Fuck missing games, any more domestic abuse charges and Marshall will see his ass in jail...and then he'll get suspended. 2. A 5th round pick for a #1 WR is not a "we're going all in" trade. 3. So he'll miss 4 games, wooptyshit. The Jets have still 4 games of Cotchery and Edwards on a run-heavy offense.
