I feel the same way. If its not a 2nd or 3rd, its not worth it;, however he's probably not worth more than a 4th considering the injury *shrugs*
First of all nobody has offered a 3d rd pick for LW. Second please name this great RB that you believe will be as capable as LW. You can't have enough good RBs on a team. Tomlinson is over 30. Greene is injury prone. Keeping Leon is the smart move unless we can get a RB who is as good as Leon via the draft or otherwise.
That'll be week 1 then. With LT in the mix I expect LW to be doing both kick return duties again, as well as his RB duties. Lets start a keep leon petition/Facebook page.
If Leon isn't moved by next Thursday, it could mean he will be used to trade up for a guy the Jets really want. After all Tannenbaum said earlier this week "The roster is set until the draft..." I know about trusting what Tanny says, but I'm just speculating.
he wont be on the team next year, ill take a 4th and up for him ... tanny has a lot of success in the 4th
If Leon stays, (and I'll note, if he is healthy and capable of playing the way he was before the injury, I would love him to stay. I have his bootleg jersey too.) and performs well, it's a win-win... Those who say he won't recover and consequently performs poorly, are proven wrong in a good way. Those who say he will recover and play well will be right. Win-win for Jets fans, IMO. I just don't think I could swallow a 4th round pick for him. At that point, I'd say hold on to him and hope he plays better and drives his value up and then trade him if the team is set on that.
Why would a team give us that much, even? Teams have been so guarded with their picks this year in trades. Cromartie came here for (essentially) a single 4th rounder, and he's been a multi-year starter at his position. Marshall's 2 2nds were the equivalent of a low 1st rounder (very low, as in San Diego's pick), and he's potentially a top 5 WR in the league. Leon has NEVER been a starter at RB and he's coming off a huge injury. As we see the trades come down in the NFL this year, I become more and more convinced that the best offer we're going to get is a single pick on the 3rd day. I'm even starting to doubt it'll be as high as a 4th.
Sounds reasonable, but the clear implication is that getting a third or worse would not be enough to let him go. I agree.
I think we should see how he's doing before getting rid of him. When healthy he's one of the best runners in the game, where are you going to get that in the draft? The way people over-value draft picks is laughable, if one pick turns into a Leon Washington you've done great, so if you already have Leon Washington why move him for a draft pick? Makes no sense.
This is a logic fail. It does have some utility to us to get something for a guy we won't be able to resign. Obviously the FO has to way any offers against what they feel he'll contribute this year. My problem with keeping him is that he is our 3rd RB, and he's now replaceable on KR and PR by Brad Smith and Santonio Holmes. I would try and package some other picks or players to move up into the 3rd round, a spot where it seems like they may be able to grab some quality D-line help as BPA.
I think Leon is a nice player, but "one of the best runners in the game"? That's the grossest overvaluation I've seen in the entire Leon/Picks argument yet.
How do you figure? For the amount of times he gets the ball look at the big plays he breaks. It doesn't matter if they hand, throw or kick it to him, Leon with the ball in his hands is a threat every time he gets the ball. I'm going by what I see on the field, there's not many guys more dangerous, which to me makes him one of the best runners in the game. Pure runners, not pigeonholing him as a RB, KR or whatever.
It's such a crazy situation with LW. Do you keep him this year and see if he is still that dynamic player he once was? Do you trade him and get a pick, 2 or 3 and gamble he isn't? Perplexing decision if you ask me. I mean if he is still that dynamic player he is such a bargin at 1.7 mil, but if he's not you stand to lose the higher pick we may be able to grab for him. I don't know, i'm starting to lean towards keeping him if we can't get at least a 3 in return.
Well moving him for another draft pick may not make sense in drafting a RB at a higher draft spot. However, I think it translates differently if the Jets are high on a LB/DE/CB like Pierre-Paul or Wilson who won't fall to 29
It is. The base value is a 3rd rounder in NEXT year's draft. Draft values are downgraded by a full round when they're delayed to the next year. So, a 2nd/3rd conditional in next year's draft is essentially valued at a 3rd/4th for a current trade. Since our picks are likely to be late next season, the value is essentially a 4th rounder in this year's draft. Basically, if we get a pick for Leon in THIS year's draft, it'll be a round lower than what we'd get out of next year. To compare Cromartie's deal, you have to account for that.
This I could see if it directly involves getting a player who they feel will make more impact, but just getting rid of him for the sake of adding a pick is stupid. The chances of that pick--wherever it is in the draft--having the impact on games that Leon Washington does is almost zero. We haven't seen him play in a while, it's easy to forget how he changes games. Think back to how many games we won because Leon put us back in it or broke a big play at a key time, if anyone needs me to I can come up with a list. It's pretty impressive.
