Same here. We go into the season thinking Superbowl bound, nobody is going to stop us and Vinny goes down in game 1, first half, with a torn achilles tendon. What really gets me is that we almost got into the play-offs (Damn, we were playing HOT at the end of the season) with Ray Lucas at QB. If only we didn't waste time with Rick Myer.
Same here, 1999 seemed to be the best because we were a powerhouse, had everyone back, and the only team in our way from the year before was Denver, but Elway had retired. In 2003 we also appeared to be on the way up until Chad got hurt in pre-season, even then I thought we would do better with Vinny than we did until Chad came back. I'll also add 1983, off the 1982-83 playoff run that was very similar to this past year. We had changed coaches from Walt Michaels to Joe Walton, which I wasn't thrilled about, but we were getting Joe Klecko back and also appeared to have everything intact. We even opened on the road vs a good San Diego team and won before beginning to slide back into mediocrity. Later beat the mighty 49ers in San Francisco, too, but were just very inconsistent the whole year.
I am so excited for this coming season! People down here who know I'm a Jets fan have been coming up to me and just gushing out stuff like "Man what the hell is going on with the Jets! They're loading up!"
"Just when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door" Pumped but always guarded. Been this pumped in the 80's with the Sack Exchange, one year with pick your nose, 98 & 99 with Tuna and the year after we signed Mangini. We never win when we are suppose to, hopefully, this will be the year. Nothing guarenteed for sure. I am not being pessimistic, there is history here younger ones.
I'll add 1986, we were coming off an 11-5 1985 year with a young Ken O'Brien at QB and still the core of the team Michaels put together. That was the year we started 10-1 before everyone got hurt. Also the Mets won the World Series in the midst of our winning streak, I remember my dad saying the last time the Mets won the Jets won, which at the time seemed to be a good omen. At the time.
I'm fired up, but it's tough for me to not worry about Sanchez playing well and the rest of the team being plagued with injuries. I hope he picks up where he left off in the playoffs. Damn pessimism!!
alright - coming out of retirement for this one and only post - more on that later as we approach the start of the season yes i have been pumped before...... 1983 - after the mudbowl, a convining win in san diego for game 1 and downhill from there. 1986 - in the middel of the ken obrien cluster - we had a good team - and it showed for several weeks until injuries, lack of depth, and poor QB play reared their ugly heads. 1997 - parcells - say no more. 1999 - freakin achilles - snap - game 1 start of the 2nd quarter, 1:53 pm eastern. nuff said 2000 - healthy vinny - similar team, similar philosophy, similar collapse. 2009 - new coach, new QB, better results.... 2010 - same coach, same qb, more talent - ???????? these days u just cannot pencil in expected improvement like u could 10-20 years ago. back then if a team was a wild card they were expected to make a run to the title game the next year. not so these days. lets see what the jets can do - IMO the window is wide open this year and next year so lets get thru it. best jil
this is best offseason since coslet was here and they romanced reggie white on his free agent tour for plan b . jets got boomer that offseason iirc along with ronnie lott and a fading lenny marshall and expections where high going into that season. also u had the 1999 season and we know what happen on first series with vinny
I was excited about the 2008 season when we were ripping things apart in the FA and with the, at the time, Favre cherry to top it off.
Many people forget that O'Brien was hurt that season too. It wasn't anything spectacular, but he developed bicep tendinitis in his throwing arm, enough to drop his standard of play, which had been stratospheric for the first 11 games or so.
I usually find the time period between February and April to be the longest and dullest time of the year (after football has ended and before baseball starts)! This year the Jets off season has been so active with great moves that the time from the end of the season to the draft has gotten hear in no time at all! very excited for the draft this week and the start of training camp. Tanny has done a great job, soon it will be Ryan's turn to lead the troops on the field for what should be a great season!
i was REALLY hopin we'd get through this thread without someone worrying about sanchez popping a tendon going for a greene fumble. too much to ask i guess.
I am always excited, it's just that this year I have actual expectations. And it's awesome to see the reverence among my non-Jets friends. I love getting the emails that go: Cromartie?! And then 'You got Holmes for WHAT?!' So yeah, excited. I think the SOJ are dead. Rex has revitalized the attitude of this franchise with the awesome moves that Tanny's made.
Same here Murrell. '99 was the year I was drooling all over my CM jersey waiting for the season to start. Then it started.... That being said, I'm much more cautious now as I've experienced what happens when lady luck takes a shit on a team early on. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the Ghosts of Jet Seasons Past has finally moved on.
