They just asked Kiper what the Jets might do in the draft now with the addition of Holmes and Kiper said he expects Rex Ryan to address the front seven of this defense. Then Kiper rattled off a few names of guys who might be there for the Jets at 29 like Hughes, Griiffen and Odrick, which is no surprise ... but then he added "the big, fast rising defensive lineman, Linval Joseph" into the equation. I had to throw Brown in there in order to show who I thought the BPA's were( Made me also think he would be a good trade down target, which I never thought before) I like Vlad because he would benefit from a year on the bench as much as anyone in this draft. I agree on Dunlap and think the Eagles will target Griffen OR Price.
forgot about Nate Allen and Morgan Burnett for that matter. I'm changing my selection from McCourty to Nate Allen. Chances are we will trade down. We do not have a glaring need and there are plenty of guys to choose from at that spot. What could we get from Cle/Buf/Jax coming up to get Tebow? They will have to chain Rex to the wall to trade down. I can see him going crazy, he is full force, aggressive all the time.

This video shows some great strengths and weaknesses. It shows Griffen over-pursuing on some plays and taking great angles on others. All of his weaknesses can be coached. His power combined with deceptive quickness make him a better fit than a guy like Jerry Hughes. The reason why I don't like Hughes in the 3-4 is that he has limited pass rushing moves. I also see him being a liability against the run. I think he's got a late first round value as a 4-3 end, but not in the 3-4. I just don't see him fitting into our scheme. I've looked up a ton of stuff on Rex Ryan's defenses in Baltimore. The only year he had a player or players get double digit sacks was in 2006 when Adalius Thomas had 11 and Trevor Pryce had 13. The rest of his time running that scheme, no one had a double digit sack total. I'm not so sure he's looking for an OLB to come in here and get a ton of sacks. I think he looks for versatile linebackers he that can line up all over the place.
I saw that video also about a month ago and I was very impressed. I agree with you 100% and I think he would be a great fit
Oh man... how great is Universal Draft? Somebody should post all of their vids on a thread in the draft forum. Valid argument and good evidence as usual, Electric. Those spins were indeed ridiculous. But I still see issues. For instance, the video starts off focusing on the outside speed rush of the second fastest defensive line prospect this year and yet no contact on any of them. The other Trojans collapsing the o-lines tend to mask that fact, but I still think it's a concern. There's a fluidity missing in Griffen's rush, I think. The agility is there, you can see it in the other facets of his game. The change of direction, the read and react, etc. But in the pass rush, just the pass rush mind you, I'm seeing... hesitation. I'll temper my "4-3 LDE" assessment with this- he could probably be an extremely effective run-stopping OLB and a sufficient pass rushing OLB. That might be exactly what Rex is looking for and I'll gladly defer to the man, but if I were running the war room, I'd like to come out of the draft with a pass rusher extraordinaire, if there's one to be had. My .02.
I agree with his ability to line up anywhere. When he stunts he seems to hit that lane and explode towards the QB, and finishes the job. That's a Rex Ryan kind of player. in the 46 schemes, he could do very well right away when they stunt. That motor alone makes me fall in love with him as a prospect. Gholston should take notes.. maybe even the Cactus. The kid looks like a robot set to "kill" until the whistle stops. Its like a switch goes on and he's ready to kill the man with the ball (awesome schoolyard game to play btw). I'll take him with the 29th.
I've seen a few scouts question his motor, but I've never seen Griffen give up on a play. I watch every SC game that I can and he's usually around the ball. In that video, you see a lot of teams using tight ends and backs to cut Griffen's legs. He's the type of player you have to watch out for pre-snap. This kid chased down Terrelle Pryor in this video. That's not an easy thing to do. Griffen may run hot and cold when it comes to getting after the quarterback, but in my opinion, all pass rushers do. You can't get a sack on every play. He's a very intelligent player when it comes to taking angles. He's just a complete defender - he can run through you or around you...and I love that in a linebacker. I've watched him since he was a freshman - he does things that 275 pound players aren't supposed to do.
That's the word I would use if someone asked me to sum him up in one word. intelligent. He seems to have a great 'feel' for the game the same way Kyle Wilson has a feel for receivers when they run their routes. You can't teach that. He is a football player. nothing else. Those are the only guys I want on my team.
As much as I dislike Pete Carroll, he did a hell of a job coaching that defense. ...not necessarily the secondary, but the Trojans' front sevens are always so damn good. Yeah, it consists of four and five star players, but they are so well coached. Carroll and his staff coach that team like a professional football team. They play fast and smart - that's why guys like Cushing, Rivers, Tatupu, Maualuga, and Matthews have been so damn good in the NFL. Top talent + top coaching = success Griffen is a hybrid player - he spent most of his time being coached by Ken Norton Jr. Norton Jr. was the best linebacker coach in the country and it wasn't even close.
Would Odrick be a reach at 29? I don't think I saw anyone mention him. Do many posters not like him at 29 or just don't think he will be there?
Jared Odrick definitely wouldn't be a reach at 29. He's not going to be there. In this scenario, he's already gone... I think we'll see him take a Tyson Jackson like rise a few days before the draft. I don't think he'll go in the top five like Jackson did, but he could definitely go in the top fifteen. Even if he doesn't rise, I've heard multiple reports that the Ravens won't pass him up if he's there at 25. Odrick's my top prospect for the Jets, but I'm not getting my hopes up. It's just not realistic anymore.
Odrick would be great value if he was there at 29 and more than likely the consensus pick for the FO if he is there. But he isn't expected to fall that far. But the point of this exercise is to pick someone at 29 that isn't mentioned in the OP. So according to the rules Odrick is not an acceptable pick.
RIF (Reading Is Fundamental). That's what I get for skimming. This is tough one. I have to go unconvential. Morgan Burnett - My favorite safety of this draft. His stock has been climbing among NFL scouts to the point that taking him at 29 may not be that much of a reach.
I didn't do an actual count, but it seems like most of you took Everson Griffen IMO its a very good pick in this scenario with the 28 previously selected players I listed I went with Linval Joseph, but Griffen would have been my second choice In fact it wouldn't take me very long to get excited about that addition
