Holmes or Edwards would depend on performance...Right now if Holmes plays great you have to give him the edge because he has better hands then Edwards

I understand this sentiment, but I don't necessarily agree with it. Tannenbaum et al seem to perform their due diligence on players (Gholston excluded) before acquiring them. For example, ever since the "malcontent" Braylon Edwards came to NY, his character/work ethic has been unquestioned and downright praised; and judging from his on-field play and media interactions, we have no reason to believe otherwise. Then, on the flipside, someone like Rhodes, who has underperformed while displaying some poor character qualities, gets shipped out. It'd be one thing if we were acquiring any & everyone (e.g. Pacman Jones), but it seems like Tanny is more keen than that, and every move is prudently calculated.
Couple things: I don't think we have to/should be looking at the WR corps in the traditional sense, asking "Well, who's gonna play the Slot?" When you have 3 talented WRs like the caliber we now have, you don't limit your Offense to that type of conventional thinking. Why/how couldn't the Steelers get anything more for Holmes? I'm still trying to figure out how a 5th Round Pick was the best exchange they received.

Holmes talked/tweeted his way off of the team and he's starring down the barrel of a Goodell suspension for probably the first four games. If he stayed on the Steelers, he would be there for 12 games in the regular season until he was probably allowed to walk when his contract expires at the end of the season, meaning that the Steelers would get nothing for a player they no longer wanted and whose replacement was already on the roster. Instead, they got a 5th round pick for a WR they no longer wanted and whose replacement was already on the roster.
That's a somewhat reasonable explanation. But what I'm sayin is... no other team offered, say, a 4th Round Pick for him? The Dolphins definitely need more WR help for their franchise QB; they couldn't offer up their (earlier than the Jets') 5th Round Pick? The Bears didn't offer anything? The Rams? The Buccs? There are plenty of teams who need a big-time WR. I'm just having a difficult time fathoming that the Steelers - upon hearing the Jets' 5th Round offer - didn't contact EVERY other team and say, "The Jets are offering their 5th Round Pick; anyone wanna offer just a tad more for Holmes? If you do, he's yours." Just seems mind-boggling to me, that's all.
Agreed, it is a tad worrisome as to why all those teams you mentioned with huge WR needs wouldn't even offer a higher 5th or a 4th for a stud like Holmes. Maybe they just wanted to reassess where they were after the draft, or maybe they didn't even have the chance to make a better offer and the Steelers just jumped on the first deal they could make. But it is very strange.
