How many yards will we give up next season? Just taking a look at total defense, and the passing stat caught my eye. Revis gave up very little yards as we all know, now with Cro on the other side as well, its going to be super tough to get completions... I'm dizzy even thinking about the pairing. We gave up 2,459 for the season which equates to 153.7 per game, 51.7 completion rate, in other words where ever Revis wasn't. So how many yards will be conceded ? dammit I have a stutter now
I'll keep it where it is a less than 2500. Even with two talented CBs, I can't see the pass D not allowing under 2000 yards. That's a once in a decade team, and the defense doesn't have those kinds of players yet. Key word is yet, because Bryan Thomas is still around and the front 3 aren't elite.
This, and it's not a knock against Thomas, cause he's a solid player for sure, but He ain't no Calvin Pace. If we could get a serious pass rusher (Brandon Graham, PLEASE fall to 29.) This defense would be awesome. The DE's need to be upgraded. Jenkins is elite, Ellis is very good, and the other DE spot is a giant ? Kinda hoping Alualu falls to us in round 2.
Its a big IF, but if we do get the pass rusher we need, we may well go under 2000 yards, tall order, but with Rex never say never.
pace on the weak side thomas will play the run, taylor in on 3rd down to play the pass. revis/cromartie on the outsides, leonard/pool (sharper?) on the insides. harris/scott up the middle behind jenks. put me down for 1500 or less
If we get Odrick, Graham, or Kindle (Kindle being the most likely possibility), This defense is going to be even better, which is not an easy thing to do given their success last year.
2010 opposing QBs as of now: Henne x2 Brady x2 Fitzpatrick/Edwards x2 Flacco Palmer Rodgers Favre Shaub Delhomme Roethlisberger Cutler Stafford Orton It would take a combination of great defensive play, and a schedule with very few elite QBs to get under 2,000. I don't think our schedule helps us enough in the latter part.
anybody going under 2000 is getting their expectations up way to high. cromartie is going to be an upgrade at that other corner spot but he will get beat his fair share of the time. he likes to be aggressive on the ball which is excellent when it works but it also leads to big plays for the offense when it doesn't. i would expect a similar number of yards on the defense. i think they will probably give up less than last year but what they did last year was already very impressive so a minor improvement is all i can reasonably expect.
Id feel more comfortable with our pass defense if we manage to upgrade from Pool and our #3 corner. Lot of the deadliest passing teams really spread that ball a round to tight ends, #3 or even #4 wides.
A perplexing question so early in the offseason. Who knows it can depend on who the Jets draft and/or sign later on.
