If you read his initial comments he views 31-40 as borderline 1's, so this is the one I found most interesting

Strong praise and he pretty much views Joseph as a late 1/early 2

The Taylor Mays critics were vindicated here as well, as Gil has him in his 41-50 Group

Saw this yesterday. Thanks for posting. I agree Brandt is wired in but the day before the draft Goose Gosselin puts out his top 100 and he averages 88-90 out of the top 100 annually.

Anyway, Brandt also posed the question to several personnel guys, which prospect do you think will be a surprise #1 draft choice.

He named about five guys but the ones I remember were Morgan Burnett, Tyson Alualu and Linval Joseph.

Love it! Joseph is a guy who I have really liked since GH did his defense of selecting him at 61 for the mock.

I find it interesting that Brandt has Cam Thomas so low, tier 7 in fact. especially since many of TGG guys are so high on him for the Jets.

Personally I have decided I want to trade down 5-7 picks and draft joseph. I think he would be perfect for us. He rotate with big jenks inside and he can play de for us when needed. This is the guy I really hope ends up a jet on draft day.

There's no specific number attached to any player, just tier's

He lists the players in each tier "alphabetically" and not by number

You know what, rule, if you like him that much just take him at 29 and don't try to get cute. Assuming Brandt is correct, he is essentially saying you can take Joseph with a late 1 and you don't have to apologize for it .. its not a reach.

The question is, is Gil Brandt right and is Joseph really a late 1/early 2 on actual NFL boards?

Well if he's as good as Brandt seems to infer, at his size and with his strength & athleticism it makes sense too me.

Other than knowing Gil is plugged in, why does it make sense too me?

This is what George Young used to call a "Planet Player"

Back then when the phrase was coined it referred to strong and athletic 300+ Pounders, meaning there were only so many 300+ Pounders on the planet who had enough athleticism to excel in the NFL, thus those players are or should be more valued in the draft because they are rare and much harder to find.

Today that would apply to 325+ Pounders like Joseph .. he would be a modern day "Planet Player"

I screwed up. I was looking at Pro Football Weekly's list at the same time.

The most interesting part of the article, to me, is how he has Thomas as his #1 rated WR, even in front of Dez Bryant.

    Interesting list.

Spoon is rated way too low.

Gil Brandt has a significant amount of influence on the NFL draft. Brandt was credited for the big increase in Tyson Jackson's stock last year.

NFL GMs have alot of respect for Brandt's opinions.

That one really doesn't surprise me too much, Jam. If he didn't break his foot I believe Thomas would have been a consensus TOP 10-15 Pick just like Bryant.

That's why I loved Pat Kirwin's projection for the Jets in his latest mock draft, because I view Thomas a player the Jets would not even have sniffed at 29 if not for that broken foot.

NO DOUBT, and rightfully so since he built the only team in NFL history to have like 20 consecutive winning seasons "prior to the free agency era", when the draft was essentially the only way you could build a team, and that means he had to consistently draft exceptionally well to have that much success for that long. And that's not even to mention his slew of division titles, confernce titles and SB championships.

YES, technically Tex Schram was the Cowboys GM, but Tex Schram was more of a "team president" and the draft/player personnel was Gil Brandt's area of expertise ... and those Cowboys teams were flatout loaded during his tenure.

That's why he's a living legend in the scouting community and argubly the greatest scout in league history

If he's not #1 he's in that conversation

It's possible Tyson Alualu & Linval Joesph's stock could increase dramatically the next 2 weeks.

I see the draftboard being very fluid the next 10+ days. There will be some players entering the bottom of round 1 we may have not expected.

Cam Thomas/Nate Allen/Tyson Alualu/Linval Joesph are strong possibilities.

Agreed with you Jabba, I don't think they should get cute and risk giving up their guy either, but Joseph's perceived value around here has been mid to late second rounder, if that is true in the inner circles of the NFL (although Brandt's opinion refutes this) dropping back 5 spots picking up an extra pick or two in the process wouldnt be a bad idea.

If i'm Tanny and he is there at 29, I would think that its a great move to grab him then and there.

I'd be pleased with the 5'10" 199 lb slot receiver at 29.

Brandt has Tate in the 4th tier...With Edwards and Cotchery, and Keller, and Tomlinson (or Washington) ...we'd be able to create big open space in the short middle on passing downs.

If anyone else mentioned Tim Tebow in the same sentence with Roger Staubach I would have him committed, and I'm still tempted, but Gil Brandt scouted and drafted the dodger :eek:hmy:

And he's not lying, Staubach was more of a runner than a thrower at Navy and initally with the Cowboys as well, until Tom Landry told him if you run as anything but a last resort when the pocket breaks down you'll be riding the pine ... and benched him at the outset to prove he meant business.

Soon thereafter he became one of the leagues most feared and lethal passers.

I still can't see that happening with Tebow, but its interesting to hear that comparison from Gil Brandt

Wonder what Tommy could have done with Mike Vick.
