Just my opinion, I'd rather give Gholston one more shot to figure things out with his career on the line than to pick up like a 5th round pick that would have less potential talent-wise yet still have a chance to be a bust.
Knowing our luck we trade the Ghost and it will come back to haunt us (hornet style pun) Better to have him killed, make it like an accident
hello all.. long time reader, rookie poster... Not gunna lie, kind of tend to agree with the consensus here... while albeit obviously being a bust(barring a miracle), trading him at this point for a 6th or 7th rounder that might not even make the team, is kind of a waste IMO We then have two wasted picks instead of one, even though it does hurt to say it... give him another shot at this point i mean jeez we've already waited this F'in long lol Espcially since we drafted him so high id kind of rather see him suck on my team then we trade him for a 6th rounder and he flourishes somewhere else(dont act like we dont have a habit of this in the past all ny fans) I really do hope/have a feeling if he dont do squat again this year he definetly wont be on the team next year...
I realize we have invested a great deal in the ghost, but why else are we keeping him? Rex worked with him for a year and got him to make a few tackles. Nothing else. He doesn't even do well on special teams. He is a waste of a position. Get rid of him.
I had a bad vibe about Gladys the minute his name was announced and he was interviewed by the NFL Network on draft day. Right after his name is called, the news crew bum-rushes him to get his feeling on becoming a Jet. You fully expect to hear things like "Great city, love the team, rivalries that can't be beat, looking forward to going after Tom Brady twice a year, I want a ring, etc, etc." Instead I hear, "Yeah man, it's cool." Interviewer, "Do you have anything else to say?" "Nah man, it's cool."
Ugh...Don't remind me! I was so against drafting that guy, and then to hear his 'excitement' made me cringe. That being said, I don't think getting a late round pick helps us in the long run. The percentage of those picks making the team is low. Then again, if Gholston was a 6th round pick initially, he would have been gone ages ago.
Well this isn't necessarily true. If Gholston wasnt the #6 overall pick, I don't think he would be in the NFL right now. But why not take the pick? We already are convinced Gholston is terrible, and he can't get on the field, so why not take the pick and see what you get? If the pick turns out to be trash then oh well, we replaced garbage with trash. But the pick could actually turn out to be of value for us. The guy may not become a superstar or even a starter, but he could certainly be good depth for us. Then again, we could draft a HOF player in the 6th round ala Brady. Why keep a guy who we can't get to produce at all, when we have a chance to get someone that might be able to help us out? Or better yet, we could use that pick to trade up to get a player we are sure will help us... Either way no reason to keep Gholston, he has proven to everyone and their grandmother he doesnt have it, so if somebody would give us something for him, then we are almost required to take it.
Okay, let's talk about true fair market value in trade for Gholston. The Jets, in 2008, traded Dewayne Robertson - a player widely considered a bust even though he did have a productive season and 2 other marginally productive seasons - for a conditional pick in 2009 (considering his stupid contract) that could have escalated, but ended up becoming nothing, zip, zilch, because DRob did not meet the 65% playing time requirement to justify the Broncos giving up a draft choice. The Jets simply wanted to get an unproductive, overpaid player off their books. I would say something like that is fair market value for Gholston - little to nothing.
Not sure what Taylor has to do with Gholston. If the Jets could trade Gholston they would have done it last year. That would be one less bench warmer to worry about and it doesnt matter one bit what happens with Taylor.
well if we sign taylor, then we have another guy at the OLB position and somebody either can't stick around, or has to be inactive every week. if we sign taylor it isnt so he can be inactive every week. Do you want to pay gholston 6-8 million dollars to be inactive every week? So if we can get anything for him, I would like to. Also last year, he couldnt be traded because of his contract, and to be honest, i don't think we wanted to. We had Rex coming in, and he basically said I can get it out of him. If I can't get it out of him, he isn't worth anything at this level. Now this year, we have paid him even more of his guaranteed money, and as a result, a team that trades for him is more likely to be able to restructure his deal, or won't be required to pay out as much money to gholston as they would have last year...
I was really such a huge fan of Gholston when he was in college, and I was hoping the Jets selected him. I really want to give him another year, and if he doesnt perform atleast decent then cut him
I am not sure it would be a waste because it seems as though his chance to come in and be a difference maker or to even contribute at all has come and gone. The Jets have been drafting well recently with the exception of Gholston, so a 6th round pick may very well end up being a good depth guy. And let's not forget that a 6th or 7th or whatever could be packaged with another pick to move up on draft day in, say, the 3rd to 5th round somewhere....where we might be more likely to find someone who will stick around. Right now, anything's better than nothing....especially nothing that you're paying a huge contract to.
