I know, the 2010 draft is 2 weeks away. I believe it's important to have some knowledge of the best players available in 2011...it can help you make your choice in 2010's draft . 2011's draft is loaded at the skill positions. I think the Jets should rebuild their lines and build depth in 2010, and go after playmakers in 2011. Also, you left out a player that has the potential to go #1 overall: Jerrod Johnson, QB, Texas A&M. Also, Ryan Mallett is another quarterback that should go fairly high. There's a kid that plays right next to Marvin Austin on UNC's defensive line named Robert Quinn. He's a special player - I think he'll be a top ten pick if he stays healthy.
I'd take any of the 4 WRs, even Baldwin is very good player. Right now, I don't have Johnson rated that high, he's a freak of nature and could easily be a top 5 pick. No Ryan Mallett too!!
I don't know too much about the 2011 class yet....which ones of those defensive players are projected to play in a 3-4?
Cam Heyward, Duke Bowers, Greg Romeus, Marvin Austin, and Allen Bailey are all great 3-4 end prospects. If we don't grab on this year, we'll have a shot an elite prospect in 2011.
I think we'll see a few quarterback needy teams go in different directions this year because of the talent at the position in next year's draft. In my opinion, it'll be a three man race for the top spot: Johnson, Locker, and Mallett.
From what I've read so far Heyward and Romeus should be gone by the time we would pick next (of course this is assuming we have the season that we should have). But I've seen Austin and Bailey go in the late first in a couple pre mocks right around where I would expect our pick to be. So I'm going to keep an eye on all of these players this upcoming season and see how their draft stock goes. After watching film though Heyward looks like an absolute STUD and a perennial Pro Bowler at the position in the correct system. I'm hoping somehow he ends up on Gang Green.
The 3-4 DE position is loaded. Heyward & Romeus are my favorites. Clayborn could surprise, he's had some off field issues.
Heyward and Romeus are both big time talents. I like Marvin Austin a lot too. Adrian Clayborn is a blue collar player. The guy goes all out on every play. His height along with the talent at the position will probably push him into the second round.
I sent WW a PM a few days ago about Vontaze Burfict, a rising sophomore linebacker out of Arizona State. I know he's not a 2011 prospect, but I believe he's going to be the best 3-4 inside linebacker prospect in quite some time. Burfict could be the next Ray Lewis. I'm mentioning him because Bart Scott will eventually lose a step. Also, 2011's class is thin at inside backer.
I meant to get back to you!! I haven't seen Burfict play, I don't see ASU games. I heard he was a terrific talent and was considering USC...but went to ASU.
I want Heyward to have a pedestrian year next year so the Jets can draft him in the 20s. Floyd is going to be a playmaker at the next level.
Patrick Peterson is my boy, love that cat if Cro doesnt work out (which I doubt) Peterson is so fuckin nasty he has Revis like ability where he matches up against some of the best receivers in the SEC (Jones and Green) and he shuts them down. He looks huge for a corner but he runs with the best of him. I think if John Chavis actually employed a Revis like system where Peterson was always on the opposing teams best receiver, Petersons production would go WAY up
Peterson is a lock top 10 pick IMO if he has the season we all know he's capable of. Everyone will be chomping at the bit to pick this kid up and I'd be shocked to see him drop into the teens. Whoever picks him up will be getting the next Revis (I love being able to say that).
So judging by the tone of your post, I would say your a Tiger fan But I agree with what your saying, the only thing outside of his control is if John Chavis can put him in the right position, that and if Peterson can have Craig Loston play up to his hype, Peterson should be in good shape Another guy who I think could be a late round steal is Drake Nevis, LSU had a god awful defensive line last year and of course Les Miles always plays experience over talent (see Sheppard, Russell). Back on point, I thought Nevis was pretty productive last year, not great but I saw enough to think that he is going to have more of a breakout in 2010
