I agree...there's still plenty of time to address the backup QB position.

I'm hoping the Rams cut Bulger by June...and H.Ellard makes that phone call.

I'm actually content with Ainge and O'Connell.

Conan the barbarian in his basement lair with little spinach quiches. That about sums up my attitude about Kellen Clemens. I want to like him, but somethings just not right.

well....i'm not sure what we have in Ainge...outside of what he's produced against 3rd stringers in the preseason.

    Same goes for O'Connell.

I'd like to have a veteran backup behind Sanchez.....somebody who could step in and fill the void if called upon. For example:

-Marc Bulger (if he gets released)
    -Jeff Garcia
    -Kerry Collins

I'm of the opinion that the Jets are built to win now....if Sanchez goes down...i don't want the "season" to go down with him. A veteran QB would alleviate such a disaster....rather than having a "question mark" step in to take the snaps.

Ya, and the remaining posters wanted to give Brett Ratliff a chance too.

That's the only name worth looking at. We all saw Collins revert to the type of play that sent him to/got him cut from the Raiders in the first place. Bulger has been terrible for the past few seasons as well. I would be much happier with Ainge out there than either of those two.

I don't believe any of that. Clemens was a good prospect coming out of college and he did alright as a starter, given the circumstances. Favre was signed because he's Favre and he was available. Rex being hired pretty much sealed his fate. No doubt his chance to be a starter has sailed, but I'm sure he'll get a shot as a backup somewhere.

If he isn't back next season, think Bulger would be a good signing. Maybe Garcia, if he's willing to come back. And if not, I think I'd be ok with Ainge.

Lots of QBs were good prospects coming out of college. Browning Nagle was a good prospect coming out of college. Heath Shuler, Tim Couch and Ryan Leaf were great prospects coming out of college.

    That wasn't the point.

Chad went 1-7 in 2007, Clemens went 3-5. If McCareins hadn't shit the bed twice in that game against the Ravens, Clemens would probably have a winning record right now.

He had one good game that season when he came in fresh at the end of a game against a tired defense. I've seen Brooks Bollinger do the same trick against the Falcons in 2005.

Clemens started that game and all three of his wins. Pennington looked like shit the whole season.

I'll take the veteran QB as a backup.

I don't get the idea that a 3rd string with no experience facing starters in the pre-season can walk in a be a viable backup to Sanchez....we do this with every decent looking young backup, as if he's the best kept secret in the NFL. Its time to stop.

Give me Garcia. He'd do well in this kind of offense.

Oh yea, Pennington's ankle injury. I thought he came in late. Got me on that one.

Clemens looked like shit ever since that season. Jarvis Green scared the pocket presence out of him and he's been shaky in his delivery in every TC that he has been a part of since then. If Clemens had the ability to start in this league then Tannenbaum would not have traded for a veteran QB and trade up to pick a rookie in consecutive years. He has gotten worse every year, throwing the ball to everyone not in a Jets uniform, the turf included. What the Hell has he done to prove that he can play in this league? He didn't even look that good in the Ravens game until that last drive.

His pocket presence is one of the worst i've ever seen.

After his last step in his dropback the panic immediately sets in.

The thing is that we don't need a guy to step in and beat starters. We need a guy who can step in and hand the ball off to the guys who need to beat the starters. The Jets had the best wins last season when they were handing the ball off and limiting the passing game.

If Sanchez goes down(for the love of God, no) then Rex and Schottenheimer can just scale it back to the 2009 play calling, minus the ridiculous amount of passes against the Bills and Falcons.

This isn't like when we had Pennington, just drafted Clemens, had no defense and had no solid running game. The Jets can sit back and rely on the defense and the running game and the defense to take care of it. It's not like Bulger or Collins could take any team to the playoffs anyway so we're fucked if Sanchez goes down for an extended period.

There is a chance with an old FA QB. Garcia has been in the playoffs, and I think he can still win.

Any QB in place of Sanchez will not work. The offense has to score points to win. Garcia can get the Jets to 17 or 20 and give them a chance. I'd hate to see a season wasted due to Sanchez going down and some kid ruin a whole season.

Garcia is the best option out there and really the only one who would have a chance to do it. Still, I think that Ainge can prove some people wrong. I agree it wouldn't be smart to go into the offseason with a low-round player with absolutely no regular season experience backing up our franchise QB but I'm really expecting Ainge to turn some heads as a backup. Also, I have no reasoning behind this aside from a hunch.

If Sanchez goes down, it's not going to make a damned bit of difference who the backup QB is. We all saw the Patriots minus their franchise QB. We all know how well the Colts play without theirs.

When your franchise QB goes down, your season doesn't end with a Super Bowl almost every time. The only example I can even think of was Brady taking over for Bledsoe.
