Hmmm...let's see. Would i want to get a player that will contribute right away (2nd round grade is the assumption here, not necessarily your buddy Dorian Boose).....OR......would i want no compensation whatsoever? that's a real headscratcher, junc
The impacts were very similar and our O took more of a hit after Leon went down than our D did after jenkins went down.
What if Leon turns out to be the difference maker in a SB run then we lose him- will it have been worth it to have him for '10 then lose him undre those circumstances? We have a 2nd year RB who has been injury prone in his 1 year and an ancient RB. We need another RB- yuo want to use ANOTHER draft pick on a RB when we could use that pick to upgrade on the DL or in the secondary?
that's a specious argument and I'm shocked you'd attempt to make it. Jenkins isn't a free agent and there is no risk of him going anywhere unless we want to lose him, so he is coming back and will improve the team. Leon is a free agent and thus we have to weigh multiple options such as whether he is worth the expense, if he is going to leave can we get something in return, will he only be here one more year. the scenarios aren't even remotely comparable and your reduction of them to only one factor is dishonest and thus specious. the argument is we did just as well or better without Leon and he might leave, so should we trade him and get something in return. that isn't the same as we did just as well or better with Jenkins and he is coming back and not going anywhere, so we don't have to consider alternatives based around maybe losing him. c'mon, buddy, you know that was a ridiculous analogy to make.
Why argue the relative importance of Jenkins v. Leon? They suffered different injuries and play much different positions. Jenkins is under contract and is presumably keeping the FO apprised of his recovery. Leon is not. Apples and oranges.
I was using the flawed logic that we did fine w/o leon so we could get rid of him and wouldn't miss him. We have too many people here trying to play GM and wanting to accumulate as many picks as possible by getting rid of proven talent for unproven talent. I think it's crazy especially w/ so many questions w/ our RBs. The bottom line is a healthy leon is worth more than a 2nd rd pick, folks on thos board wanted us to lose games in 2005 to get a higher slot to take a leon type in reggie Bush w/ a top 5 pick.
holeeeeeeee fuck. Our O took a hit?....the only thing Leon took away from the offense was his role of being Sanchez's checkdown outlet. Our running game was the best in the league.....without Leon in the lineup. What if?....junc.....what if the world blew up tomorrow. That's not an argument....that's grasping at straws. I'm dealing with facts..... FACT: Leon is coming off a major injury. FACT: His agent is a shitbag and has basically fucked Leon out of his long term contract he should've signed last year. FACT: Our run game was NOT AFFECTED by his loss last season. FACT: Leon will be a UFA next year....I'm 90% certain he will leave...and we'll get nothing for him. FACT: We don't know yet if Leon can return to form. the HB class in this year's draft is deep.....and we all know that the HB position is the most easily replaceable on the roster. You don't think a player like Jahvid Best or Dexter McCluster can waltz on to this roster and perform the same duties as Leon would? I'm sure the DL and the secondary would be upgraded with our OTHER picks in our draft, junc.....the pick we'd get from Miami could be used on running back, and we'd better for it in the long run.
Don't make the mistake of comparing this FO's draft record to previous ones. You'll bring up Gholston next, so allow me to save you the trouble by reminding you that he was a Mangini pick. Again, you talk about the choice to match, but I don't see a team abandoning a 2nd to sign Leon to an average contract, nor would he accept one with Keels. He'll get paid, and then we'll have a high salary injury question mark who has made NO indication he still wants to be here. We have a difficult time re-signing other players as a result, both due to future cap implications and the message sent by accepting a high salary for Leon. The realities of the situation are ugly. IF Leon signs an offer sheet, it's going to be for terms we shouldn't match. Otherwise, Keels likely tells him to sign his tender and play for a new contract this season, after which we STILL probably won't pay him. I'd rather he sign an absurd offer sheet and we get something for him than see him for one more season after which he walks.
I don't believe in the return of leon washington. I would trade him for a 2nd in a heartbeat. I am willing to bet his side to side movement will never be the same.
You guys are way too involved w/ Leon's agent, that is wjhat agents do. They try to get as much money for their clients as possible. I think a bunch of you want to get rid of leon simply b/c of Keels. Our O was clearly not as good post Leon and a big factor was Sanchez lost his check down option. So I can use a hypothetical situation about him helping us win the SB and you laugh but you say you THINK he will leave after next year and that is different? how so? NONE of us know how he will perform after the injury or what will happen contract wise going forward but you keep assuming he'll be gone(even though if he is signed to an offer sheet and we match we inherit that contract). We always hear how a certain position is deep, blah, blah, blah. we got Greene in rd 3 last year, TWO times in the past 5 years most of this board has wanted our team to LOSE games late in seasons in order to get either Bush or McFadden and neither has been as good as leon. The draft is a crapshoot. It amuses me how we have folks that want to see us lose games to get talent then want to lose that talent for more draft picks.
And now you're using the flawed logic of assuming that Leon is healthy and still that proven commodity.
For all of you wondering why the Dolphins would want Leon a 3rd String Running Back on there team for a 2nd, keep this in mind: 1. Ronnie is looking for a new and most likely HUGE contract from the Dolphins and I'm not so sure if they want to pay that with his off the field trouble, injury problems, and pay-roll issues coming into 2011. 2. Ricky Williams is 32 turning 33 in May, The dolphins with Bill Parcells at the helm are looking to get younger and faster and with every year that passes by Ricky will most likely lose a step or two and eventualy retire as a Doplhin in 2-3 years at the most. Keeping these in mind Leon seems like a great option at RB, Hes fairly young (27), not many carries taken in his career (370 in his career), quick as hell, and has proven to be a perfect return specialist and scat back which they could see as a better option then an unproven 2nd round RB. Fitting perfectly with there Wildcat offense and trick plays. Not to mention he was apart of the rival Jets and could add key aspects to the Dolphins inside info on the Jets play schemes. IMO the Dolphins look at this as the perfect opportunity, Leon can be signed for a cheap 4 yr 10-14 mil with incentives and some health clauses and could be a low risk/ HUGE reward player with starting potential and strong offensive presence on screens and other formations. Snatching up Leon for an offer the Jets couldn't refuse would be ideal for the Dolphins acquisition.
it isn't flawed logic because they considering how well we did without him in connection with the fact that we might lose him to a team willing to pay him more than we are and thus should consider a deal that provides us in compensation in return, and thus we can lose him, get something in return, and probably still be as good, as opposed to overpaying him for several years from this point forward which can affect our ability to improve the team in other areas that need more improvement than the RB position. if Leon had two years left on his contract, nobody would be saying trade him for a 2nd.
Youre right about the Brown issue, although he's unlikely to get a suspension. However, it's not a cheap opportunity. Keels won't take the contract you mentioned, nor would the Jets likely fail to match it.
Are you really going to try to argue that after everything that came out about the 08 draft room? It was a Mangini pick.
spin it whatever way you want, junc.....you clearly don't understand the reality of this situation. Anybody who would take nothing for a player (who's going to leave anyway) in lieu of compensation....needs a clinical evalulation. I should've ended the debate after you dropped that gem.
I understand its cheap but with a 2.5-3.5 mil contract a year for leon its close to the 4 mil a year we would have offered leon at FULL health. He is now injured and not a sure thing, with a 2nd round pick glaring us in the face theres no way we cant take that.
+1. The only way possible would be to agree on a contract (unlikely), or slap the franchise tag on him, which would bump his salary to a whole new level. Tag and trade would be only way we get rid of Washington for something and if we tag, we may not get a buyer where Washington would be willing to negotiate a contract seeing that he'd be paid tons under the tag anyways. If we can find a team interested in his services, I say pull the trigger. 2nd is a decent pick for him and I doubt if Miami throws in something else besides the 2nd which like the 40something pick.
