Forget that. This is the NFL, where futures are anything but guaranteed and you'd better take the money when you can. Leon was offered a fair contract last year and he CHOSE to take a risk. It backfired, but it was still his choice. Opinions of him shifted because of his and his agent's attitudes, not because of on field play. If he suddenly negotiated a long term deal and quit dicking the FO around, you'd see people back on his side in droves.
People are not bringing up the fact that we did fine WITHOUT Leon last year. I'd rather draft a defensive player so we can continue our dominance on the defense. A 2nd rounder is high enough to grab a guy that can be a star for the defense. IMO Leon's injury puts him at the same risk as a draft pick panning out, so arguably Leon's chances of coming back to full self is the same risk as drafting an unknown. I have more faith that Rex can coach up almost* (Gladys) any draft pick up over the chances that Leon's shattered leg allows him to be as shifty as he once was. Also, like it or not, in a year or two were going to be very thin on the d-line. What if Ellis starts to decline and Jenkins is forced to hang them up. If we want to be a good defense for years to come we NEED to pick up another d-lineman ASAP. I don't think anyone here can argue that a backup runningback is more important than our defensive dominance.
We trade Leon were DEFINITELY getting a HB and a DL in the first 2 rounds. 3 picks in the first 2 rounds and those are both glaring needs. Who knows what we spend the 3rd one on. Safety/wr/dl likely. But HB becomes a MASSIVE need without leon out the door, possibly even our biggest.
It depends, if LT can still play, then we bought ourselves another year without needing to draft/trade/pickup another runningback.
I think after last year the FO has to realize how incredibly important it is to go into the season with 3 HBs. Last year we went from 3halfbacks to 0 and it cost us a trip to the superbowl. No way in hell is the FO gonna take their chances with 2 HBs, especially with one of them being 31 and coming off a terrible season. That said I thins LT has a good year, but theres no chance he can carry the offense alone if greene goes down.
I have doubts as to Miami offering a 2nd rounder for a guy who's off somewhere rehabbing by himself. That said, I'd grab that 2nd round pick in a heartbeat. (would love to somehow/someway pick up "Leon II" in 2011 draft in Noel Devine of West Va.,..)
Yeah I was a huge Leon fan until his agent totally fucked him and my image of him. I like players that play for their love of the game and earn the money they're paid. I'll have no problem with offering Revis, Mangold, Harris, and DBrick top contracts because they earned that money with their play. Leon wanted more than he had earned and it backfired hugely and now everyone including me thinks he's a douche. A year ago I would be against trading Leon for a 2nd rounder, but now, trade him to Miami and take the 2nd. We can pick a player like Toby Gerhart or Best to fill his spot.
And what if one of those players decides the Jets aren't offering enough? I don't get the "Leon is a douche" attitude. He said himself he took a gamble on his play last year by turning down the contract and he lost. He realizes he is going to make less now because of what transpired. If we get a 2nd for him fine, if he signs his tender fine, if he signs a new reasonable contract that is ok also. I just don't understand why some of you act like he came by your house and kicked your dog.
If they wanted him they would make him an offer or make the Jets an offer. Has either happened that anybody is aware of?
I doubt Parcells would give up and # 2 a some big $$ for an injured player. I don't believe it. If it was true, I would overpay to keep him justfrom going to any place but the Pats and Miami. Anybody else, take him for a #2, he's yours
that's ridiculous, junc. I mentioned it earlier in the thread.....but if we end up keeping Leon this season....he'll most certainly be gone when he hits the Free Agent market next offseason. Let's get what we can for him.....he's not vital to our offense.....nice to have, but not vital. I'd miss him more on Special Teams.....and that's assuming he comes back healthy.
The Jets aren't letting Leon go to an AFC east team- It was already said that the Jets will match any offer made.
You guys are too in love w/ draft picks. Sometimes draft picks turn into vernon gholston, Rick Terry or Dorian Boose. He's a HUGE part of our offense when healthy and as long as he is healthy he is worth more than a 2nd rd pick to me and to see him go to Miami and torment us for years and years so we could HOPEFULLY get a decent player w/ that draft pick is not worth the risk. By the way, if we match an offer that he signs w/ another team he will be under contract for the 3-4-5 years ot whatever that contract length is so we wouldn't be losing him next year.
I would have no problem letting him to go to any team in the AFC East. I really don't see why inter-divisional trades are frowned upon so much. If we feel that a 2nd round pick is worth more to us than Leon, then does it really matter if he goes to a rival? Miami will be losing a very high pick in a strong draft in order to get our question mark of a runningback. He might go there, get a good sized contract and end up not even being the same player he was. I would think that all fans are in agreement that no matter how well his rehab goes, he will lose a step regardless. He will never be the same player. If letting Leon walk, and receiving fair compensation is the best move for the JETS, then that is what you do, regardless of what other team is involved.
