Skin color has nothing to do with football. That is the worst argument I've ever heard. He wont be a good RB because he is white? Come on dude.. Let's talk about his football skills, not his skin color.
I would like to call this statement "dumb"....but even dumb people wouldn't make such an assinine statement.
Luke Staley was very productive, but he didn't have NFL measurables. No one ever considered him as a NFL talent. Brian Leonard was always going to be a fullback or a H-back. Rutgers used him at tailback because, at the time, he was their best option. The only thing in common that Gerhart has with these guys is skin color.
I gave my reasons for not wanting the guy, other than being white. He runs high, stiff, and slow. He's not going to be able to make guys miss, and he's not going to be able to push the pile like he did in the pac 10. How about all the other guys on here pre-judging other players. Someone said they don't want Jerry Hughes because he's a player transitioning to a new position, and that he will be Golston 2.0. Well, using that logic, lets never draft an OLB again unless someone is available from the 5 college teams that run the 3-4. Is that statement any more valid than thinking that Toby Gerhart compares with guys like Luke Staley and Brian Leonard, and will not be successful? Also, keep in mind the type of thread this is-- it's meant to be fun, and negative at the same time. Would I really be upset if somehow we drafted this guy in rounds 4-7, no. Do I want to pick him in our first two picks- absolutely not. If you think we should, then that's just fine by me.
NDmick, do me a favor and show this guy your sig. Make some damn paragraphs man, this post is a mess. You didn't answer my question, troll. Can a hispanic player like Ryan Mathews play running back? There aren't ANY in this league, yet he's the consensus #2 back in this draft class. Race has nothing to do with this sport. You are sterotyping the absolute shit out of players and it's ridiculous.
No? Luke Staley didn't have NFL measurables? 6-1, 227 running a 4.51 40? "Staley suffered a broken fibula late last season, leaving NFL personnel men with plenty of doubts--especially when he didn't work out at the combine. But that changed for the better when he ran a 4.51 in the 40 at the Cougars' timing day"
Yes. Luke Staley weighed about 210 at BYU, he played against crap competition, and he suffered a ton of serious injuries in college. The guy had a lot of questions marks. Gerhart doesn't.
Not stereotyping, but making my own Comparisons. I am choosing to compare him to some other white runningbacks who have similar size, speed, and college careers. I love Ryan Mathews, and based on what I've seen, I would compare him to a guy like our own LT. Similar size, speed and skill set.
No, you can't do that! You can't compare Mathews to LT, because Tomlinson's not hispanic. You're only comparing Toby Gerhart to other white guys, so it's only fair. Why not compare Gerhart to powerful backs like Earnest Graham, Derrick Ward, or Deuce McCalister? ...oh yeah, because they're black. See what I'm saying? You can't make comparisons based on a guy's skin color. It's a joke, man.
I dont see how anyone could be upset with Cody being our pick. We need a NT to spell with Jenkins, may as well get a big fatass one to do it.
Mike Mayock would probably come up with something more intelligent than saying that he's going to fail because he's a white runningback.
The problem is this: Rex Ryan doesn't necessarily like having giant nose tackles. Kris Jenkins is a freak of nature. For being as big as he is, he's still an incredible athlete. Mount Cody is not athletic or versatile, and that's why I don't think he fits with the Jets. I think he'll be a hell of a nose tackle in the right 3-4 scheme, but I'm not sure he'd fit in here.
Am I way off when I compare Gerhart to Staley or Leonard? No, they are all similar backs. If I choose to use those two guys as comparasons, than so be it. Perhaps I should compare him to Ron Dayne, would that make everyone happy? That guy sucked too. And why don'y you comment about comparasons made with players of the same college, or players making the transition to another position? At least you can tell I'm not 100% serious when I make a statement like I did. Some of these posters who say they don't want a player because he's transitioning from DE to OLB, and he's going to be Gholston 2.0 need to get called out.
1. I don't like Jerry Hughes. I think he'll be a good pass rusher in the 4-3. I don't like him for the Jets. 2. Gerhart is nothing like Staley or Leonard. They aren't similar backs. I actually don't mind the Ron Dayne comparison at all. He didn't suck in the NFL, but he certainly didn't live up to the expectations. Dayne was just over drafted, while Gerhart won't be. Gerhart is a solid mid-to-late second round running back prospect - no one's going to tell me anything different. The same college comparison is stupid, so I completely ignored it.
I agree! I would love to have Cody suiting up in blue and white too!! I don't care how fat he is. We need some fat on our team.
Why would you compare him to Ron Dayne??? Ron Dayne was a scatback with a big body. He ran fast but with his shoulders square and way too high - and like a pussy. Gerhart powers through tackles, and uses speed to create separation. They aren't comparable at all.
