Let's say no one signs Leon and we go into the season with Greene, LT and Leon as our RBs (not counting Richardson 'cause he's a FB). I think if we do that we MUST have another RB on the roster. Greene is injury prone and will be handed a major workload, LT is over 30 and has been hit A LOT and Leon has just come back from a very serious injury. Considering we'll run the ball a lot I think we must have a 4th RB on the 53 man roster... That said, if you agree, what kind of RB would you like him to be? Speedy guy, power guy, do-it-all-but-not-so-good...? would you spend a pick on him or just let some UFAs battle it out? What about having another FB and using him as the 4th RB for a year (J. Davis)? Everyone on this board knows who my vote goes to atm (C. Washington, he'd also be good on ST) but I was wondering what the general opinion was. God, I hope it's not Woodhead
Lynn Likes His Room, Likes the Draft's RBs This should answer most of your concerns. Some intriguing stuff . http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/3640-lynn-likes-his-room-likes-the-draft-s-rbs
i don't want a 4th tailback on the roster. i say if the jets let washington go then draft a running back, but otherwise no. if this happens, i'd like a speedy, change of pace guy like what washington is.
I expect the Jets to take BPA with most or all of their picks. If a quality RB falls into their laps at some point in the draft after the 1st round, I think they'll take him if he's the highest on their draft board. As Mambo said, Greene hasn't carried the load on the pro level yet, Leon's coming back from a horrible injury, and LT is 31. On a team that will likely lead the NFL in rushing attempts for the 2nd straight year, depth is crucial.
Right now our top 4 are LT, Greene, Leon, and Chauncey/Woodhead, right? I'd take a guess that the CS is pretty comfortable with that but the top 3 all had injuries at some point last season. Most RBs have injuries though. LT: high ankle sprain; Greene: ribs; Leon: broken leg I'm a bit anxious to see Chauncey Washington play because the front office has said that they are high on him.
If history is any guide, odds are at least one of our three backs is going down with an injury at some point in the season. I'd like to see the Jets pick up a big between the tackles runner in the draft.
I'd like to have a 4th RB because I think we'd be wasting Greene by using him just to wear down defenses... we need a bruising back to do that and let Greene show off some of the plays he had last off-season. Just because the kid is 220+ lbs doesn't mean we have to make him run straight at opposing DTs... My problem is that to me (As far as RBs go) LT is more of a Leon kind of player (at this point in his career) than a TJ or a Greene. His best asset is his pass-catching and 3rd down ability.. which is exactly what we want Leon to do. One of them and has to and since it won't be LT I'm good with trading Leon and drafting another power back ala Gerhart or Tate or Hardesty (I loooove Hardesty).
With regards to the article that gus posted, I'd absolutely love to grab Hardesty or Tate in this draft. LT's only going to be around for likely this year and next and Leon may be gone this offseason or next. I really think that we should grab another young back in this draft in the mid rounds. I also like Dixon from UConn. Also if we do lose Leon, I'd say it's almost mandatory that we take a back this draft.
Man my guy is Hardesty without a doubt...if not him then I like the little guy out of Ol Miss McCluster....
I wouldn't mind having 4 backs. Considering the Age/injury situations with Leon and LT, I don't really consider them long term solutions. They could both very easilly be gone after next year. I would love any of those big 6 foot 220 pounders... just as long as they are not Toby Gerhart. If we draft him in the second round, I will scream so loud that my face will turn as red as his. No red faced running backs please, no matter how well they test at the combine.
Sure. I like the idea of having 4 RBs in a run-heavy system, especially with the talent in this draft.
I like the idea of BPA - but I'd be disappointed if we draft a RB in the 1st. Our OL is what makes our running game what it is - not our runners.
Thanks for the post Gus. Good read. Anyone think we can get a 3rd for LW?? And would we be happy with that?
No more runningbacks. If there's a great value in the middle-late portions of the draft, fine, but unless Washington is moved, we don't need a 4th runningback as a priority. Have Chauncey Washington, Danny Woodhead, and a UDFA/late pick battle for a 4th runningback spot, and if they all just suck, we'll go with 3.
Woodhead is not an NFL player. He is just too small and can't contribute on special teams. The Jets can't depend on him. I'm not opposed to picking up another back off the scrap heap of cuts by another team, but I am not sure I want to use a draft pick on a back.
Yes, if the value is there. It's becoming rather apparent that Leon will be gone in 2011, LT isn't going to play much longer, and there are some fantastic backs in this draft. A RB would be great injury depth this year and would have an increasing role as Leon and LT departed over the next few years. I also wouldn't complain if we picked up a back next year instead.
