http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/03/22/buzz-jets-eyeing-illinois-receiver/ Do you guys think we are actually considering him as an option or are we just doing our due diligence? I don't think he will be BPA with our first pick and quite possibly reaching at this juncture. I also doubt he falls to us with our 2nd rd pick. I keep reading he is a poor mans Braylon Edwards. Not sure if thats what I'm looking for in my slot WR as I would like him to be a bit more reliable. Here is a scouting report for people unfamiliar with him since he is not a name that I have seen mentioned often. http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2010/2/8/1301753/arrelious-benn-nfl-draft-scouting Arrelious Benn 6'2, 220 pounds | Wide receiver | Illinois Agility: Only decent agility. Hips look a bit stiff when he changes direction. Benn is mostly a power wide receiver in the Terrell Owens mold. Doesn’t have the quickness to juke defenders in the open field. Blocking: This is an area where Benn excels. He’s said he really likes to block and can really bully cornerbacks. When the run isn’t coming to his side, he doesn’t always give a great effort in this area. Body control: Benn is really, really good in this area. He’s a strong receiver and uses that strength when he’s in the air to get deceptive separation. Doesn’t lose his balance when he’s running his routes. Hands: This is where Benn needs to improve. His pass-catching technique is poor and he often catches the ball in his frame. Likes to have the ball placed in a certain spot and doesn’t make many catches away from his body. Cradle catches too often. Drops too many easy receptions. Release: Benn was rarely jammed at the line because teams played off coverage to avoid his power at the line. Has quick feet, which he utilizes off the line. Takes very few false steps at the line. Played a good deal out of the slot. Route running: Struggles some in his route running. Not very crisp into and out of his cuts. Ran a lot of simple routes – 10-yard digs, simple crossing patterns and short posts. At his best against the zone where he can just find a hole and sit in it. Gets good separation using a head fakes. Size: Benn has excellent size for a wide out with very good strength. He uses this strength in the open field to break tackles. Already has NFL strength and long arms. Speed: Benn’s straight-line speed is very good. But he has some trouble getting up to that speed because he slows down a lot when moving laterally. Once Benn gets into the open field, however, he’s hard to track down. Vision: Uses his power really well in the open field. Can break a lot of arm tackles. This helps make up for some issues he has making defenders miss in the open field. Final word: Benn is somewhat of an enigma as a wide receiver. The first thing you notice about Benn is his impressive size, strength and speed. He’s also a very tough receiver who will go over the middle and is a solid blocker. However, the more you watch Benn and the more you’ll see his flaws shine through. His hands are only average and he needs to improve his catching mechanics. Benn will also require a good wide receivers coach who can show him to run a greater variety of routes. While some of Benn’s down 2009 season can be blamed on the Illinois quarterback play and an early season ankle sprain, that’s not all of it. Benn never did a great job of adjusting to poorly thrown passes or working hard for the ball when it was in the air. In three seasons, he finished with 159 catches for 2,221 yards and seven touchdowns. Also used a gadget running back and returned kicks. Thoughts?
A poor man's Braylon Edwards? I don't know where you read that, but stop visiting that site. Benn has concentration issues but I wouldn't compare him to Edwards. Edwards is more of a vertical threat, while Benn plays a very physical style of football. From the sound of things, the Jets will go for the best available players with all of their picks. If Benn is their top rated player when they're finally on the clock in the first round, he could be the guy. The Jeff Cumberland comment caught my eye. He's a really intriguing prospect. The guy's 6'5 255...that's ridiculous size for a wideout. Also, Arrelious Benn is a very good receiving prospect - if you looked through this thread, I'm sure you'd see his name mentioned more than enough.
Yea I read that on walterfootball.com. I haven't followed the draft religiously like I use too so I use websites to make up for me watching less college games/draft coverage. What NFL player would you say is a fair comparison to Benn and do you think there is a decent chance he will be BPA at 29?
In terms of size and style of play, Benn is a lot like Anquan Boldin. Arrelious Benn has the ability to be a top tier receiver in this league. I truly believe that if Illinois had better quarterback play, Benn easily be a top fifteen pick. I think Benn is going to be a YAC machine in the NFL, and I'd be a happy man on draft day if the Jets came away with him...and I don't really want to go after a receiver early. The Jets needs a physical wideout that goes over the middle. Benn has the ability to be a #1 wideout, but he'd be a hell of a slot receiver as a rookie.
would you advocate taking benn at 29 over a guy like tate? or williams from USC? suppose every receiver is on the board at 29, except bryant, which one are you taking for the Jets?
Rejus Benn. I might even take him over Dez Bryant. For me, it'd be a toss up between these three guys: Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, and Rejus Benn. In my opinion, all three have the ability to be big time #1 receivers. I like Golden Tate a lot, but he'll never be a #1 receiver. There's no reason to go after a receiver that will never be anything more than a #2 in the first round. Damian Williams is a hell of a route runner and he's got experience in a pro-style system, but I have him as a mid-to-late second round prospect now that all of the smoke has cleared. Benn can do it all. He's got deceptive deep speed, he's physical, and he's fearless over the middle. If he can work on his consistency and his concentration, he'll be a special player.
Interesting well sounds good to me. Anquan Boldin is my type of football player. If he's there at 29, sounds like we will be immediately filling in our slot WR hole along with a having a future starter in the making. Good stuff E
I'm a fan of picking Benn in the back of the first. I think he's incredibly underrated right now due to Juice Williams completely nuking his stock this season. This time last season, a lot of us were talking about Benn as a potential pick if our '09 season landed us in the top half of the first round. In fact, I remember quite a few people saying that we wouldn't have a shot in hell at him if we had more than 6 wins. As Mr E said, Benn would be able to come in and play slot for us right off the bat due to his physicality, while his athleticism could push him up to the level of a #1. He's not my first choice, but it's a pick that would fill an immediate need that could pay larger dividends down the line.
I compared him to Edwards because of the dropped passes. Benn reminds me a little bit of an Anquan Boldin type who bounces off defenders.
id say hes more of a poor mans dre johnson, when he was coming out of college ... whether he can develop into that type of player is the question, but i think he has far more natural ability than boldin had coming out
His stock has dropped. A while ago, we would all go nuts if we landed him at 29. Not the case anymore, but Im still on his bandwagon. I would be very happy with him with our first. I think this will be Braylons last year with the team.
Is he 6'2 or 6'0 7/8 big difference. We have more pressing needs like getting younger and more athletic along the DL. I like Bay Bay Thomas as a WR he's bigger and faster.
I don't think Thomas is faster than Benn. They're probably right around the same speed actually. It's not a big difference if he's willing to go over the middle and make tough catches. It's not a big difference if he can stretch defenses and make big plays. Yeah, we have more pressing needs...but everything that Tannenbaum and Ryan are saying leads me to believe they'll go after the most talented players that are available no matter how stacked or thin the position is. Like a previous poster said: the only position we can't really improve is quarterback because Mark Sanchez is the future at that spot. Obviously, we don't need a center, a left tackle, or a #1 corner...but we could get better a lot of positions. You draft depth in the later rounds. You get stars at the top of the draft.
I'm crazy about Benn. Big, physical, smart and versatile. He's an excellent receiving prospect who suffered in college because Ron Zook isn't half as good at coaching as he is at recruiting. I think that it's very possible that Benn is the BPA at the Jets pick. And I'd be thrilled if they reeled him in.
I think Benn is going to go a lot higher than the "experts" seem to think, I think he will be the first WR picked. There is no denying his talent, last year he was a lock top 10 pick, the scouts and GMs know why his production dropped this past season. I just have a feeling that Benn is going to be one of those guys that gets called a reach or a riser when he gets picked middle of first round but is actually a guy that is ranked pretty high on a lot of draft boards. I'd much rather have Benn than Tate and right now is my #1 hope if we can't trade down. I would love Williams in the 2nd if they address another position in the first.
