Woody met with commish after coin flap

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Jets owner Woody Johnson confirmed to The Post yesterday that he had met privately with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell just days after Johnson's incendiary statement blasting the league over the new Meadowlands Stadium coin flip.

Johnson, who is attending the annual league meetings that officially begin today, wouldn't describe his face-to-face with Goodell except to claim both sides have put the controversy behind them.

"I think we're moving forward," Johnson told The Post when asked Goodell's reaction. "We've got a lot of [issues unrelated to the controversy] both pending and future that will come up, so we're good to go."

Johnson has been in hot water since last Tuesday when he released a statement blasting the NFL for holding a secret coin toss that ultimately decided the Giants would play host to the first regular-season game at the new $1.6 billion stadium.

Johnson confirmed to The Post that a handful of other owners had mentioned his surprisingly blunt public criticism of the NFL when he spoke with them at the league hotel yesterday.

"A couple of [owners] mentioned it, but I haven't heard any negative comments -- but maybe it's selective hearing," he said, smiling.

League sources say several owners were irate over Johnson's statement last week and might try to punish him by denying the Jets and Giants their joint bid to play host to the 2014 Super Bowl.

Johnson scoffed at such speculation, describing it as a leap of logic that would end up undeservedly punishing the Giants, too.

"The Super Bowl stands on merit," Johnson said. "You're not going to take it away because on something unrelated. That wouldn't make any sense."

In line with similar comments from the Giants, Johnson said there is no bad blood between the teams over the coin flip. He also said he remains confident the joint bid to bring the Super Bowl to New York will be approved by fellow owners when the vote is held in late May.

Despite reservations over the possibility of the first snowy Super Bowl, New York is considered the frontrunner over Tampa and South Florida for 2014 after Arizona pulled out of the bidding last month.

"I'm not presumptive in any way of the other owners, that's for sure, but it's a strong location, and the fact it represents two teams in a self-financed stadium would add to the allure of doing it in New York," Johnson said.

Johnson and Rex Ryan both told The Post yesterday that the Jets are likely to vote against the proposed modification of the NFL's postseason overtime rule when it comes up this week.

"It's working pretty well the way it's going now," Johnson told The Post yesterday. "We're going to look at it until the final moment, but as of right now, we're kind of leaning toward keeping it the way it is now."

Giants co-owner John Mara is in favor of the change, which would allow the team that loses the coin toss to get a possession in OT in the playoffs if the other team doesn't score a TD on its first drive.

If Woody doesn't like it he should build a stadium of his own. He's the one who chose to sell time shares to his season ticket holders out in Jersey instead of putting up his own money for a stadium in NYC

I know, I was annoyed that those nimby fucks killed it. But he could have built it in Queens instead. I don't like that the Jets have to share a stadium with the Giants again, in Jersey no less

I agree with you. I hope that if we keep winning, we will no longer be second class citizens in NJ. Did you know that we also had to settle for a worse lockeroom due to a coin flip? There is a lockeroom available near a loading dock and another one down the hall, away from the prime location. Guess who won the coin flip! I also wonder why we had to build a training facility AWAY from the stadium while the GAINTS were allowed to build a training complex, next to the stadium.

2nd class? Start thinking differently. I don't think of the Jets as 2nd class and nor do anyone else I know.
So they have a locker room further down the hall, is that really that important?
Did you also know that the Jets locker room is just as they wanted it? with state of the art equipment. People that have visited both locker rooms think that we actually have the better one, but really, who cares?

Woody has every right to get upset and vent his spleen. When you invest the kind of money that he has it gives you that right.

    Fair play to Woody

As for the locker rooms I don't think its that big of a deal that the Jets is more state of the art, according one of the Giants personnel they only spend about 40-45 hrs in there during the season anyway.

First of all, the Jets training facility is light years ahead of the current Giants one, and does it really matter if the Giants are that close to the stadium? No one even goes in the stadium until before games anyway.

Also, anyone who's taken a tour of the new stadium (I have) will tell you that the Jets locker room is much larger than the Giants. Woody has spent a great deal more than Mara on the Jets facilities, and that says something. The stadium is going to be ALL JETS during Jets games and ALL GIANTS during Giants games. This is going to be a non-issue after the first season.

I really wish people would stop crying about it.

Owners getting irate and so on because essentially Woody Johnson was calling the Commissioner a liar. Oooo!, you can't do that! Hmmph. Everyone knows I can't stand Woody the Cheapskate, but I didn't see owners freaking out when Roger Goodell destroyed the Cheatie Gate tapes. I wonder what Kraft actually offered him for that generous reward? The goodness of his heart? It begs the question.

When you put a billion+ dollars into a project, you have every right to nitpick about minor details such as the coin-flip process. He wants the first game, and he made it known. Fuck the Giants.

Don't the Giants have the same rights as the jets anyways! Yes we are Jets fan, I myself respect a lot the Giants as it represent my city. I am both a Giants and Jets fan and both should enjoy the same privilegies of having a new stadium. Let's not feel remorse because the last stadium was called Giants stadium. It is not anymore so let's be good roomates and win in our new stadium for the sake of New York!

    GO NEW YORK!

i really hate the nfl offices and the owners who let it be the way it is. these old cocksuckers are mad because someone spoke out against the holy emperor who is really just a puppet for them.

go ahead dont give ny the superbowl. then let someone find out it was because of this and that you all banded together to not give it to new york because you were mad that someone spoke up... isnt that collusion?

    fucking scumbags.

I'm sure Woody cares if this affects the Super Bowl bid, but I sure don't - unless the Jets are in it I couldn't care less if the Super Bowl is at the new stadium or not. As far as other owners being outraged that he dared to point out how moronically Goodell handled this, as I've said in other posts, I applaud Woody for voicing his displeasure publicly, and enthusastically encourage the other owners to shove it if they don't like it.

Same here. I don't live in the area anymore, but I think I'd actually be annoyed at the idea of fans of 2 other teams wearing their colors all around town for 2 weeks getting ready to compete for a Lombardi.

and spending loads and loads of cash in NY, many of which will benefit JETS fans.
F that, if we are not in it, show me the money. Let them wear their colours for 2 weeks in the best city in the world. It'll still be a green and white empire state
