Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was arrested late Friday night for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol during an offseason trip to his hometown outside of Atlanta this weekend, two sources told The Miami Herald.

Brown, who has no previous arrest record, was arrested after an officer pulled him over for making a lane change without signaling, sources said.

He was released from jail early Saturday morning.

The Dolphins are aware of the situation, and they are continuing to monitor the legal process. They are not believed to be overly upset with Brown because of his impeccable past as a player and a citizen.

The team did not have a comment Sunday.

Brown is distraught over the arrest, and he has hired an attorney to help defend him in the case, the sources said. He did not perform well during the field-sobriety test, which contributed to the officer's decision to arrest Brown, sources said. It remains possible the charges soon could be reduced to a traffic violation in the coming days. The arresting officer's detailed version of the arrest has not yet been obtained because it occurred during the weekend. Brown's agent, Todd France, did not return messages Sunday to comment on the arrest.

The running back is continuing a recovery from foot surgery in November, when he sustained a season-ending Lisfranc fracture that put him on crutches for six weeks afterward.

Brown is a restricted free agent tendered with a first-round pick, but he is expected to return to the Dolphins next season given the high level of compensation that would be necessary for another team to sign him.

The Dolphins are scheduled to begin their offseason voluntary training program on Monday. Brown's legal situation will not keep him from attending. Brown, a Pro Bowl running back who made the Wildcat offense popular in 2008, is among the most popular players on the team's roster. His laid-back personality has typically left him in good standing with his coaching staffs when it cones to his life away from the football field.

The veteran would have hit unrestricted free agent after the most recent season, but the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement caused a delay in his ability to demand a new contract in Miami or elsewhere.

At 28, he is still expected to anchor the Dolphins' rushing attack next season, while Ricky Williams and Patrick Cobbs serve as his backups.

Brown's entire NFL career has been spent in South Florida. He was the team's second overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft.

he deserves to get what every punishmenmt the league hands down.

but in no way do i wish he gets suspended just so we can get an advantage over the dolphins.i want to beat the phish at full strength and i like the league to have all their stars on the field.

but again 1st and foremost he should get what he deserves like any other player.

Take a taxi, you're a millionaire. Professional athletes getting DUI's always seem so stupid to me.

I don't get this. I don't give a crap who I play or how beaten and bruised they are. All I want is a win and I don't care how.

He got busted for DUI, but over there in Georgia it's pretty obvious he was initially pulled over for driving while black
When's the last time you saw a cop pull someone over for not signaling? All they usually ever do is jerk off their radar guns

Yes, obviously he was pulled over because of the color of his skin and not the fact that he broke the law. I'd love to ban you for making such a stupid fucking comment, but unfortunately that's not a banable offense.

So let me get this straight. This asshole millionaire goes out, get's drunk and drives home (instead of paying for a ride) putting peoples lives at risk including his own, and people are seriously going to cry that he was pulled over for driving while black? Seriously? Maybe if he didn't drink and drive and then disobey the law while he was driving this wouldn't have happened.

Yes, I agree. He wasn't pulled over for swerving or running into a lamp post. He was a black guy in a nice car.

He deserves to rot in jail for a while, no excuse for driving drunk people that ruin lives and he should have known better. Brown needs to get slapped around for that, doesn't mean I should think racist cops are a good thing.

So what, are cops supposed to allow him to illegally change lanes because he's black? It's the law that you have to signal before changing lanes. I've been pulled over for less and I assure you it had nothing to do with race.

I don't know if you've ever driven through Georgia but I can tell you that the state cops there are a network of good old boys who don't take too kindly to outsiders and more often than not people that aren't white. If you have out of state plates and don't look a certain way your chances of getting pulled over for the slightest offense are pretty high. Nothing like a badge and a gun to double your cock size

And that has what to do with him illegally changing lanes? I'm sick of hearing people cry racism when there actions are the cause. When I get pulled over for breaking the law I can't cry racism.

edit: and yes I've driven through GA.

It's like Jay Walking, people don't get busted for it unless the cop wants you for something else. I've known two people that were pulled over in Georgia coming back from Florida in separate incidents, one guy was black, the other guy was puerto rican. The excuse was a broken tail light and the other for going 4mph above the speed limit. In both cases the cop wanted to search the car. I won't say anymore about it because the focus should be on another idiot NFL player (would have no issue if it were a drunk driver checkpoint or something), but it just bugs me about how these cops operate.

People get pulled over for having tail lights out all the time. I've been pulled over for having a tail light out, for not having a front license plate, for crossing the white line at a light to pass one car and take a right on red. All of these things are very minor offenses that cops can pull you over for and will if they feel like it.

The bottom line is that if you don't give them a reason to pull you over they won't. If you do give them a reason to pull you over they might. Ronnie broke the law and got pulled over for it. The fact that he's black is irrelevant, I could have been pulled over for the same thing. Ronnie is 100% responsible for being pulled over.

here's my issue with the whole thing: if it's a DUI, you shouldn't get a reduced violation just because you're a famous football player. If he was drunk driving, then let the charges stick. It doesn't matter to me if he is famous or not, that should be non-negotiable.

Brown is distraught over the arrest, and he has hired an attorney to help defend him in the case, the sources said. The arresting officer's detailed version of the arrest has not yet been obtained because it occurred during the weekend.
