FYI, the comp picks should be announced tomorrow, Mon , Mar 22 at the NFL Owner's meeting in Orlando. As soon as I have the comp picks, I will complete Rounds--3-7 in our Mock Draft. Don't expect the Jets to have any comp picks.
New England should have a few, but at least they'll be 7th rounders. I'd rather have Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard than an extra 7th.
Sorry for the dumb question, but what exactly are comp picks? What does a team have to do to get them? Does it have to do with draft pick trades and RFA signings?
Basically, the NFL awards them based on UFAs lost vs. UFAs gained. If you lose UFAs to higher contracts than you sign them, you get picks. I say basically, but it's anything but basic trying to understand the secret system. Just know that teams like the Titans, who lost Haynesworth to a monster contract last season, get the 3rd rounders. Teams like the Patriots, who lost Jabar Gaffney, get low picks in the 6th and 7th rounds.
They are picks given out at the end of each round to teams who cannot/do not resign their FAs who watch them sign with other teams (Scott leaving BAL for NY is an example) As far as what round picks, it depends on how much the player signs for and also how good they are. Scott would likely give BAL a 3rd maybe 4th round pick due to him being a good enough player who signed a big deal.
Some evaluators in the NFL decide as to what comp. pick round worthy each last season FA was worth. While past reputation/past stats matter, I think they look more so into how that player performs with the new team in year 1 as a barometer towards deciding who gets what pick in what round
I think he means getting compensated by that since the Bears gave up a 2nd round pick for someone who died pretty much right away(I think he played with Chicago for like 2-3 months), that they should get a pick somewhere later in the draft for the unfortunate turn of events. I don't think the NFL does that regardless though. They should consider it in the future, the NHL does it.
Ya, this is why I thought of it. A high price and then he keels over right after they acquire him... oh well.
I don't think the NFL should be looking at the NHL for any kind of solutions. That's a bush league that shut down operations for a full year. If teams were given an extra pick for a death, then they probably should also be given picks for players who have to retire early due to non-football health reasons or if they lose a player who retires early to pursue another career (for two examples, see Jim Brown with movies and Mike Reid with music). It's rotten luck and maybe cold, but tough. I think the NFL does a good job in not awarding picks for deaths.
They brought in too many UFAs last year. Chris Carr, Matt Birk, Dominique Foxworth, and L.J. Smith were all brought aboard around this time last year. They could maybe get a 7th rounder if the value of the UFAs they lost is determined to be greater than the UFAs they brought in. I think they lost four and signed four. Atlanta could get a 3rd round comp pick for losing Foxworth and a 4th rounder for losing Michael Boley. The other likely 3rd rounders will go to Tennessee for losing Haynesworth and Cincinnati for losing T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
No. Dominique Foxworth cancels out Bart Scott. For the purposes of compensation, his $7 million per contract cancels out Scott's $8 million per.
Ah, you beat me to it. I'll be mildly surprised if Baltimore receives any picks. The value was essentially equivalent between loss and gain. Atlanta should get a 3rd, but I think Boley comes in at a 5th. The 4th rounders are generally for contracts in the range of $6 million. Boley signed for under $5 million. I forgot about TJ. Good catch.
Here's the Internet expert on predicting Comp picks....Adam. I believe he posted here at TGG years ago. http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/
