Even if/when we do draft another hb this year (which id bet we will) I dont think we can rely on him/LT to carry the ground game. Wed still be able to run the ball effectively due to our offensive line, and would probably still stuff it in the redzone but at the very least wed have a balanced offense.
Ha, that's so true. He will be on the roster until we find someone beter which should be before the 1st pre season game. He has chances last year to step up and he just doesn't get open. He beats 3rd string training camps CB's running posts and that's it. I guess the Jets figure nothing to lose by giving him another off season. Its a shame, thought we had something,
cant wait for this guy to have another amazing preseason then fall off the face of the earth come regular season. it is really my highlight of the year
A lot of Clowney hate... I just don't get it. He is getting there, the Jets see something in him, I think he has potential to break out and really contribute. He has good hands and speed. The rest is coachable, I think he'll be just fine. I also think this will help our cause going into the draft as well. I don't view this as a bad thing at all.
When they actually threw to Clowney he caught the ball. He was a deep threat though they rarely used him after picking up Edwards. Personally I felt that was a mistake as he should've been the guy they sent for that deep pattern once a game as unlike Edwards, he probably would've caught the ball. That being said, I'm not knocking Edwards. I personally like our receivers and to me the key is spreading the ball around. When that happens we always seem to do much better. We saw last year that for some reason Edwards became Sanchez's crutch and he tried to force the ball in and Cotchery was an after thought. Mix it up and throw to Keller, B. Smith & Clowney every so often and we should be able to have a pretty decent passing attack, especially when we can beat you with our run game.
There is a couple of reasons why Clowney wasn't used that much and they actually has very little to do with Braylon Edwards. Clowney is simply not a good WR. Despite his speed he still cannot get open because he does not know how to run routes. He has a terrible football IQ and despite going through TC for 3 years with the Jets, he still cannot seem to grasp the idea of how to run his routes. Clowney got opportunities to see the field even before the Edwards trade but he could not do anything with them. Part of that was Sanchez staring down Cotchery, Stuckey and Keller but part of that was also Clowney being unable to get open. As for spreading the ball around, once Schottenheimer figured out how to implement a run-heavy offense, there just were not enough passes to go around. Schottenheimer is going to open up the playbook a little more this season but this team is still going to live and die with the run. If Clowney cannot get his shit together early this season, he is not going to be here next season. Personally, I still don't like Clowney as anything more than a 4h option. We still need to add a slot WR.
We will have to agree to disagree on Clowney. He definitely needs to work on his routes and becoming a more complete receiver but he did get open deep and he caught the ball when it was thrown to him for the most part. I agree with a run heavy offense that there are fewer passes to go around, though still believe a team is more potent when they have multiple options. We saw that when Sanchez focuses solely on Edwards the offense sputtered but when he went to other options we had a bit more success. I don't see WR as a need for us like many people (unless Edwards doesn't pan out). Like you pointed out, with a run-heavy offense there's already fewer passes to go around so if we're not utilizing the receivers we already have what makes people think adding another is going to be a difference maker. Between Cotchery, Edwards and Keller those are three pretty nice options for a QB to have. Add in LT being a pretty good receiver out of the back field and Leon being able to make a lot of plays after a short pass and I think we have more pressing needs.
The Jets need another WR IN CASE Braylon doesn't pan out. If someone like Tate or Bryant can fall to the Jets in the first round, and there is no trade partner willing to give the Jets a #2 and a #3 pick for the 29th spot, they would be fools not to select that WR in the first. Tate or Bryant would help open the passing game up and give Sanchez a WR with whom he could already develop proper timing and familiarity should Edwards not be brought back after 2010 for whatever reason. You are assuming that the trend is going to stay the same but the Jets would not have traded up to draft Sanchez, nor would they have given him the richest contract in team history, if they just wanted him to manage the game behind the OLine and the running game. The plan is to let Sanchez develop behind that but eventually he is going to take the reigns in an offense that features the pass a lot more than what we have seen or what some people on this board seem to expect. None of these players are slot WRs. Edwards is too big and too easy to tackle to consistently play from the slot, nor is he the most agile WR in the open field. He's strong, he's fast, he's quick, and he can get open but he isn't going to put a move on someone outside of a good stiff-arm. Cotchery has the quickness to get open and he can break tackles like Edwards but his best asset is as a safety valve on the sideline. Keller is a versatile receiving option out of the TE position and can be moved to the slot but using him in one position leaves a hole in the other. If the Jets want a complete WR corps than they need another slot option. LT is a great receiving HB talent but at this point in his career he's better as a checkdown option than as a straight receiving threat. He's not Marshall Faulk. Leon is probably the best candidate to play in the slot but in 4 seasons on the Jets with the same OC, he has yet to be utilized in that role on a consistent basis which leads me to believe that there is a reason for that, probably the way he runs his routes. His hands are good and he can move in the open field but he is much better served as a screen option than as a slot WR. As for the rest: -B. Smith is an ass WR, plain and simple. -Woodhead: . -Clowney: I'm repeating myself but his only asset is his speed. He's just not shifty enough to be a consistent threat from the slot and there is no reason to switch him with Edwards on 3 WR sets unless you're trying to isolate Edwards on the safety instead of on the #1 CB. If no WR drops to the Jets in the first round they should still be looking to upgrade the position later. Hopefully, the Jets can find either Freddie Barnes or Blair White in the 4th.
I hear what you're saying and like I said we'll have to agree to disagree. I believe Clowney has better hands then people have given him credit for and recall him catching most balls thrown his way, especially the deep ones. He actually had 10 of his 14 catches on 3rd down for a total of 89 years. Also, it's telling that 13 of those 14 were in the first 8 games where he was given a little bit more of a chance. Granted he needs to focus on the game and not tweeting about lack of passes but if he can he might show a bit more. I also believe we have more important needs than WR that I'd like to see us fill with our 29th pick. My take is that our offense has a ton of potential we have yet to utilize and if Sanchez makes good decisions and continues to grow and Schotty doesn't out-think himself by getting too fancy like he does from time to time we should see some nice things from the offense. Especially with Greene as the #1 back as he always seemed to get a few more yards than Jones and didn't seem to need as many carries to get started as Jones did. I liked Jones too, but early in games it was not uncommon to see him run for 1-2 yards quite a bit putting us in 3rd and relatively long.
To be fair, Ainge has not had an opportunity to play during the regular season so we do not know what he is capable of! Look at Whitehurst, he made a living at being a preseason champion and was able to get traded for a solid draft pick and a large 2 year contract without ever throwing a regular season pass, or even being the no. 2 QB on the roster! Ainge in my opinion has showed enough last preseason that he should get every opportunity to un-seat Clemons as the No. 2 QB on this team.
So you're saying that some other team will eventually give us a ridiculous pick compensation for our #3 QB?
Are you really talking about Demaryius Thomas in the first? We could probably get him a lot later than that.
This is Tanny 's plan. He extended an offer to Clowney. Later on in the draft, he's gonna go after Tate. He will offer our first rounder, plus Clowney for Raiders first rounder. Then we will trade back and pick up Tate around 10-15 and pick up another second and third rounder in the process. So Clowney is worth much much more than just a few hundred bucks.... Assuming Al Davis buys into Tannys plan...
