its harder for most RB's 6ft and over to keep low Gerhart knows how to do so, he repeatedly does it before delivering blows but coming out of his initial read of his running lanes he tends to pop up. thats natural. he can get coached out of that and certainly will be a little bit once a NFL staff gets a hold of him. I think his own comparisons to Dillon and George are accurate. prolly George the most. a battering ram with enough vision and JUST enough speed to break the occasional 20+ yarder. IJR can tell u more than I could cause Ive seen Gerhart play just not as much as him. anyways wouldnt mind him in the 2nd especially since thats essentialy a 3rd rd pick. but I realize we need depth in many other spots. but i think he'll make whatever team he goes to happy. and would be ecstatic to have him in green and white.
That was pretty much my whole point. If we have a full stable with Leon still here, I don't see the hurt in getting him a little bit of versatility. Kind of the same idea as what Rex is doing with the defense, and I think it's why Rex wanted to keep Schotty around as the OC. With a RB that could shift to FB in some situations, you could take advantage of whatever aggression the defense is throwing at you. But we'd still need a full time FB on the team, someone who could be the real monster lead man like TRich has been doing.
Jesus, my exact words were, "Is it just me, or does it seem like..." Do that sound like someone trying to "prove" something? Is it okay to hang around if I don't want to prove anything? If I just want to offer a (rare) observation or two? For fuck's sake.
This only makes sense if they plan to use him as their starting FB. Otherwise, seems like a waste to me - he's too similar to Greene.
thats the whole point they both have similar styles perfect for our offense but also liable to shorten their careers and give them nagging injuries. why wouldnt you want two strong runners especially if one of them might be dinged up?
I agree with you, and that's fine as a HB. However, it's not a quality you look for in a FB, being so close in proximity to the LOS. Whatever team gets him will work with him on this. It's not a huge detriment, just something that needs work. I was just trying to discredit any FB nonsense he's being pulled into.
hes not a pure FB by any means. and hes a RB. but I understand what Abyzmul meant by using him in dual back formations and motioning him out to recieve or the other back in the slot as he takes a carry closer to the line of scrimmage to appear as if hes blocking. all sorts of things Schottenheimer would certainly try
I'm with you there, it's all about the team. Wherever he could help, I think he would do it. Looking past his rookie campaign though, that role would diminish. You're right about the fulltime FB, Toby would be more of an H-back.
I'm in agreement with his statement. However, like I mentioned this would be something that would happen while our backfield was overly crowded (his rookie season). Once the backfield cleared out, he should be used more as a HB. All this talk is making me think we're getting him! I don't want to get my hopes too high, Tanny loves to throw up these smoke screens.
no yeah definitely. him being on the field in those sets would merely be a way of Schotty finding a way to get all of his playmakers on the field simaltaneously. I'm just a huge fan of this class of RB's and see tons of value in it up to the 4th. and being that we dont have a 3rd the value picks would be Mathews in the 1st (hes not getting past SD maybe sooner) or Gerhart in the 2nd (i really believe all he had to do to cement him being a "legit NFL RB" to most teams was run a sub 4.6 and he did) Like Marshall Faulk said about his 40 time "that says alot, it really explains why he was able to do all the things he did on film" I drool at the idea of Gerhart ,Greene and Leon long term thats me dreaming though for all i know Leon could be shipped off but im doubtful someone forks over a 2nd and works a long term contract with someone coming off a compound fracture no matter how underused hes been up to this point.
I think the jets would DEFINETLY benefit from drafting this guy high, a ground and pound back to spell Greene..... remember, LT's role will be as a 3rd down back, and as a excellent route runner out of the backfield, I don't think we could have enough depth, specially after Leon's gone.....
Exactly, that's how I want it! With only Greene as a "violent" back if he gets hurt (and playing with that style he will we're fucked... but with a Greene + Gerhart combo we'd kick asses...
Shonn Greene hasn't proven that he can stay healthy and carry this team. There'd be nothing wrong with selecting another power runner.
Imagine what the defensive line would be like the in the 4th quarter trying to catch up with little Leon!
