I'll give him the benefit of the doubt against Boise State - they had one of the best defenses in the country. The only backs that performed well against that defense were Fresno's Ryan Mathews and Nevada's Vai Taua. Blount was reinstated for Oregon's last conference game against Oregon State. He showed incredible power in that game, and gave Oregon's speed offense a nice compliment. 9 carries for 51 yards and a TD. Against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, Blount had limited touches. He still looked very good, and I don't know why the Ducks' offensive coordinator didn't get him the ball more. 5 carries for 36 yards and a TD. During Senior Bowl week, Blount was obviously the best running back in Mobile. The kid had something to prove. 7 carries for 37 yards and a TD. Like I said earlier, this kid has to prove himself...again, especially in interviews. He certainly has everything you look for physically in a power back. His work ethic has never been a problem at Oregon, and he's a fierce competitor. Hopefully that suspension got him mentally prepared, because he has a lot of talent. The punch will be forgiven, because the talent is obviously there - someone will take a chance on this kid. He won't fall that far, because he's doing all the right things at the right time.
I wonder if he could become one of those FB/RB like McLain in Baltimore... that could be appealing to us.
How far would he have to fall? If the Jets pick up a slew of third and fourth round picks, he's second on the list to Myron Rolle that I would want the Jets grabbing in those mid rounds. Blount will be a beast of a back a la Marion Barber. Blount's more of a trucker than a hitter and would benefit from defenses being punished by Shonn Greene's style of running, which is more hitting than trucking. When defenders get punished, they start wrapping up. When you wrap up a guy who can truck as opposed to hitting him, you are giving him free yards. Leon Washington returning to form would give the Jets the best backfield in the league, no question. LeGarette Blount is one of these gems of the draft that is rated low for bad reasons (Just as I feel about Myron Rolle, Freddie Barnes and Andrew Quarless). These guys will not only be huge steals for whoever drafts them, but fit the Jets roster perfectly (a strong complementary RB to Greene; a hard working, brilliant and talented safety; an underachieving slot receiver with amazing hands and great drive; an all-around TE who can block and catch the ball well - imagine Chris Baker if he could ever gain separation from defenders). I will be so very happy if the Jets draft them.
No. LeGarrette Blount is strictly as running back. A team would be wasting his talent if they converted him to fullback. He's never been a lead blocker in his life, and he'd basically have to start from scratch if he was moved to fullback. He'll have immediate value as a short yardage back.
There is no doubt he has the talent. For his sake I hope he nails the interviews. He will make himself a ton of money if he does. I just see most RB's falling a bit this year with the strong CB and DL class. I don't thikn he goes any where near round one and after that who the hell knows. I think past 3 in the 4 or 5ish range, but could be wrong.
So, do you guys still see him as a 3rd rounder now that he blew off his pro day or is a late round pick more in line. I think this kid just ralyl fucked up his chances big time.
Going into this season, before the Boise incident, Blount was probably a borderline 1st rd pick....no doubt a 2nd Rounder. He screwed himself!!! I'm betting Rd 5/6....at very best.
And yet, if we don't go RB early, he could be a steal in the late rounds. Of course, that's a progressively shrinking could.
