This is my 1st mock draft, hopefully I wont get killed too bad. I did not include any trades, although I do think trades will shake up the whole first round. 1. Rams- Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma- Rams have passed up to many Quarterbacks in the past. They will finally select their QB of the future. 2. Lions- Ndamakung Suh DT, Nebraska- There defensive line automatically becomes one of the best in the NFC. Schwartz hopes he has the second coming of Haynesworth. 3.Bucs- Gerald McCoy DT, Oklaholma- Give Eric Berry a long look, but end up deciding on the DT. TB hopes this is the start of getting their defense back to where it was when they won the Superbowl. 4. Redskins- Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma St.- Best offensive lineman in the draft. Shanahan decides that Clausen is not the QB for him. 5. Chiefs- Eric Berry S, Tennessee- Go best player available over the Tackle they really need. Surprise name to keep an eye on, Jimmy Clausen. Weis is the offensive coordinator and he may not be totally sold Cassel. It’s a long shot, but definitely not out of the question. 6. Seahawks- Bryan Bulaga OT, Iowa- No matter who there QB is, they need some protection. Bulaga is my favorite offensive line player in the draft. 7. Browns- Joe Haden, CB Florida- If this was Mangini’s pick it probably would be Pierre-Paul. But Holmgren runs the show now and he will go for the sure thing over a project. 8 Raiders- Jason Pierre-Paul DE/LB, USF- They need Oline help but Davis falls for the trap. As soon as he sees Paul do a back flip, he is sold. 9 Bills- Anthony Davis OT, Rutgers- He is falling on many boards, but Buffalo reaches to fill a need. Clausen just doesn’t fit Gailey’s offense. 10 Jaguars- Earl Thomas S, Texas- Jets fans boo the pick, but Jaguars make a great selection to solidify their secondary. 11 Broncos- Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma St.- Easy selection to make after the signing of Jamaal Williams. 12 Dolphins- Dan Williams NT, Tennessee- Another easy selection after the suspension of Jason Fergusen. 13 49ers- C.J. Spiller RB, Clemson- Need another back, would probably take Earl Thomas if here, but don’t cry about having to settle for Spiller, who could be the next CJ. 14. Seahawks- Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame- I really see Seattle make a trade for a QB before the draft, which is why I passed on him at 6. But Seattle can’t pass twice on a talent like Clausen, especially with Spiller gone. 15 Giants- Rolando McClain LB, Alabama- Giants rush to the podium to make this selection. They fill their most pressing need with a Top 5 talent. 16 Titans- Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech- Tennessee fills the void left by Vanden Bosch. Morgan drops a little, Titans get an absolute steal.
17 49ers- Kyle Wilson CB, Boise State- Think about going with Trent Williams, but decide that Wilson is a better fit. They need a second corner to play alongside Clements and eventually be his replacement. 18 Steelers- Mike Iupati G, Idaho- Pitt needs to get back to the ground game, especially with there being a chance Roethlisberger could either be in jail or suspended. 19. Texans- Taylor Mays S, USC- Shocked and amazed that Wilson is not here, they settle for a Safety. No denying Mays has great physical abilities, but is an awful tackler and awful in coverage. Could be a big mistake, for Houston. 20 Falcons- Everson Griffin DE, USC- Need pass rushing help bad. Atlanta continues to draft well in picking a very solid player. 21 Bengals- Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma- After picking up Antonio Bryant, they need a safety valve for Palmer. Gresham does everything well and will be able to contribute right away. 22 Patriots- Brandon Graham DE/LB, Michigan- A great selection for the past. Unfortunately, he will probably a sack machine. Makes a great duo with Mayo. 23 Packers- Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma- Ecstatic that he is here and don’t have to take a project type like Bruce Campbell. Instantly upgrades their RT position. Got to keep Rodgers off his back if they are going to pass the Vikes. 24 Eagles- Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida- A risk, but a team like the Eagles can take risks. They need youth on the defensive line and he provides that. Is a top 10 pick talent wise, but has plenty off-field problems. He is very immature. 25 Ravens- Golden Tate WR, Notre Dame- Baltimore continues to upgrade offensively. Tate can play opposite of Boldin or in the slot. McCourty will also be considered in this spot. 26.Cardinals- Sergio Kindle DE/LB Texas- They need a pass rush and Kindle certainly provides that. They hope he can have a rookie season like his former teammate Orakapo. 27 Cowboys- Bruce Campbell OT, Maryland- Perfect fit for Campbell. He is ridiculously athletic, but needs to grow as a football player. He can sit a year behind Flozell Adams and learn the game from the bench. 28 Chargers- Ryan Mathews RB, Fresno St.- Had a hard time choosing between Terrence Cody and him. Right now it is a toss up. It really depends on the Sproles situation and how comfortable they are with their nose tackles. Right now Mathews has a chance to be one of the top backs in the NFL, so they choose him, but it changes daily. This selection has a huge impact on the Jets. 29 Jets- Maurice Pouncey G/C, Florida- This was really a hard choice and if this is how the board play out I will be screaming for a trade. But since I’m not doing trades, I have to choose. I considered Javhid Best, Jerry Hughes, Jared Odrick and my boy Terrence Cody. As much as I love Cody, there are more versatile lineman at the end of the second like Arthur Jones and Cam Thomas. Plus with Keels as his agent I smell a holdout. Pouncey gives a versatile back up and can take Faneca’s spot in 2011. Both running back, defensive line, and pass rusher can be had in the later rounds, but a guy like Pouncey is hard to find. You can even have him in the Hunter/Turner package. He really is a perfect replacement for Faneca, plus extra depth. I think even better than Iupati. I have to give credit to Ndmick and Mr.E who convinced me in an earlier thread. 30 Vikings- Devin McCourty CB, Rutgers- They desperately need a CB and McCourty is perfect to be the second man behind Winfield and eventually be a replacement for him. 31 Colts- Brian Price DT, UCLA- An absolute steal for the Colts. A great 4-3 DT and is overshadowed by Suh and McCoy. Instantly upgrades their line. 32 Saints- Sean Witherspoon OLB, Missouri- Replaces Fujita, who left via free agency. If NO wants to repeat they need to become better on defense and this is definitely a start.
He'd be a great pick up but his natural position is center so moving is a little bit of a difficulty but IMO it would be hard to pass up a young run stuffer like Odrick which is definitely what we need at a starting role. But either one would be great.
I just think it is easier to find a DE in the second round this yean than it is to find a versitile olineman like Pouncey.
No, no its not. He started at guard in 2007 and was bumped into Center during 2008. He is a very cversitle inside lineman. He would be an excelent pick up. He can play guard right away and be bounced into Center if anything ever happened to Mangold. That said, I think we are in bigger need at other areas. DL, Safety, Rush OLB are more of a concern, but I would not hate this pick at all.
Nice work over all TBW. I think If Clausen makes it to 9 the Bills pounce. Thier QB situation is awful. I think the Jags go with one of JPP or Morgan. 14 team sacks late season is completely unacceptable. I'm with Freebo in thinking that Mays will fall on draft day. Great workouts but horrible game tape. 19 is a bit too high for him. Ryan Matthews to Houston would not shock me at all.
The reason I wouldn't mind an early OL pick this year is that it means the Jets are committed to being a good team for a long time, not just mortgaging the future so we can take a shot in a very small window of time. Faneca and Woody won't be around for all (or even half) of Sanchez's career - the sooner we find their replacements, the better.
I like this a lot except for a few things... I'd be surprised if a guy as talented as Trent Williams fell out of the top 20. I missed this the first time through, but I doubt Clausen gets past the Seahawks the first time.. Some stuff would definitely have to happen within the next month and a half. Also, that's a different pick for us, but I'm not crazy over it. He would essentially need to play behind Faneca for a while and I'm starting to get the feeling that the team likes Slauson, Turner, and Hunter since they haven't gone after other depth over the past few seasons. I wouldn't cry since bolstering the offensive line certainly isn't a bad thing, but I'd go a different direction. Plus, isn't his natural position center? I'd much rather prefer a defensive lineman, an outside linebacker, a slot receiver, or even a free safety if the right value is there..
Williams could very well be picked in the top half of round one, but there have been huge concerns about how comitted he is to football. He is a very talented big guy though.
This is true, but I don't think you spend a 1st on a guy who's almost guaranteed to ride the bench for a season or two. Especially when there are other players available who could potentially fill starting roles this season. I don't hate the pick, but I definitely would have went with either Hughes, or, more preferably, a trade down. Nice mock!
Harpua pointed out that he was originally a guard. I see what you're saying, and this was my reasoning behind not picking a WR in round 1. For this to be a good pick in my eyes, Pouncey would have to be starting at LG in 2011.
I feel that Williams or Davis will fall on draft day. I just think that Davis has better upside at LT than Williams does, which is why he goes higher and Williams falls. You're probably right. I'm just not a huge fan. I think Seattle will pick up a quarterback before the draft. I should have had him going to Cleveland. Just don't see value their at any of those positions. DE can easily be filled in the second round. There is no free safety that deserves to be drafted in the first, behind Thomas and Berry. Tate is Gone, and no other WR that has a first round grade is a slot receiver. Jerry Hughes is available, but I'm not a huge fan. I think you can get more bang for your buck by taking Greg Hardy in the fourth. Again, I would have traded out of that spot if the board falls this way, but I don't like including trades in Mock drafts. To me Pouncey would be the BPA and fill a long term need.
