Draft 1. Both very good drafts for sure and we pretty much are getting the same positions with both: Draft 1: S, NT, OT, RB, OLB, WR Draft 2: RB, S, OLB, WR, DE, OL Draft 1 places the best players exactly where we need them to be. Our team really doesn't NEED a star RB since we have Greene, but we do need a star safety (plus I think Dixon is great value in the 5th). I also think it's going to be extremely important for our team to pick up a NT this draft. I don't follow college football too much, but based on past drafts there haven't been a large amount of quality NT prospects. This draft has 3 that will go in the first two rounds. With Jenkins coming off an injury and getting up there in age we need another NT to extend Jenkins life as player and for the future after Jenkins. I don't think Pouha is good enough to be the starting NT of this team, he did a good job last year, but I think a lot of that was Rex Ryan scheming over that.
At this point the chargers are our personal bane. They need exactly what we do one pick earlier. I have a hard time seeing them pass on Matthews in the first or Thomas in the second. They both fill major needs for them as a club and are very good values there. Earl Thomas is a mid frist round pick. I could see us trading up to grab him, but that blows the rest a bit out of the water. Mays may go early, but only to a team that is almost incompetent. Say, Oakland? Barnes is a 5th to 7th guy. The fact that he was left out of the combine is a little telling. He's a good slot prospect, but not a great one. I love your scenarios. Both Earl Thomas and Cam Thomas would be wonderful. Matthews would also be a huge adition. I just can't, at this point, see either of them happening.
Everyone's forgetting that Shonn Greene was a third round pick in a fairly mediocre running back class. ...and what I mean by that is he's a mid-round complimentary back. That doesn't mean he can't start, it just means he should be paired with someone else. Greene's definitely capable of picking up a lot of yards and making big plays, but he's not going to be able to carry this team by himself. I'd like to have him around for a long time...he's going to break down if he has to take the beating alone. I think a team can have two star backs. Pairing a guy like Ryan Mathews or Toby Gerhart with Shonn Greene would be an ideal move.
It sucks that San Diego is always one pick ahead. I've heard from a few friends that are Bolt fans that the team really like current nose tackles Vaughn Martin and Antonio Garay, which is why they were comfortable letting Jamal Williams go. Drafting Ryan Mathews is definitely a possibility, but I can see Norv Turner going after the much flashier Jahvid Best, even with Sproles on the roster. Earl Thomas is a mid-first round talent, but that doesn't mean he'll go in the middle of the first. He should, but safety is a position of high value. Taylor Mays could very well get drafted by very competent teams like Dallas or San Francisco. You don't put up those kind of numbers and fall past the fifth round. I don't care what kind of offense you play in. We'll see about that on March 14th during his pro day. Barnes was the biggest combine snub that I've ever seen.
True, it would be pretty sweet to have a Williams, Stewart situation here, but I still think a safety like Thomas would be more beneficial to this team than a RB like Mathews.
Yeah, it would be nice to have a two-headed monster like Carolina does. I'd really like to see an elite rookie safety in this defense, but I think Rex Ryan might go after a cheaper veteran that he feels can fit into his scheme. I just feel like Ryan thinks he can win with anyone out there on his defense. I'm really not sure which direction our team will go in come draft day.
There's no way Thomas falls to 29, but if he does, sign me up for Mock 1. I have to think if he lasts even into the early to mid 20s, teams will be scrapping need for value. Mathews, too, I fear is a bit of a stretch considering his value and the teams drafting ahead of us, namely the Chargers. I'd take either Mock in a heartbeat but, as others have said, it's unlikely it'll fall this way.
E.......nice idea, great thread!! You made it a difficult choice. I really love Mathews & Barnes. Mock 2 is the flashy, exciting mock. I really wanted to vote for #2 with my heart. I went with the more "sensible" long-term Mock 1. Keeping our defense a strong unit. Hard to pass on the "Thomas twins" .. Earl Thomas & Cam Thomas. If Earl Thomas get's passed Houston, we have a shot. You never know what other team's boards are, some teams could have Mays higher than Thomas. I've been studying film on Cam Thomas and he has really quick feet for such a big man....he could be our Ngata type player in Rex's defense. I really see Rex using Cam as a 3-4 end. Cam could move to any position on the line. VERSATILITY. Don't be surprised if Cam's stock keeps rising in the next 43 days and may be considered a late Rd 1 pick. The NFL took notice of Cam at the combine. Calloway is a very good RT prospect and I really believe the Jets need another OT for depth and the future, thats why I had Tepper in my mock. Dixon would be a nice player with Greene & Washington. If we lost Washington, which we didn't in your mock....I'd want to add a higher profile back...Mathews or Hardesty. I would have went #1 with Washington out of the equation. I would have liked to get a WR higher, but you can't have everything. Next year has some outstanding WR talent and maybe the Jets move up to get one or stub their toe this year (I doubt it). Great job.....it makes our draft forum friends do some thinking.
Out of all the players in both mocks, Earl Thomas is the best, both as an overall player and for our team's needs. Getting him and Cam Thomas, plus Dixon for solid RB depth, was too nice to pass up. I picked 1.
i went with mock 2...you fill 4 needs right away with the first 4 picks. As much as I'd be happy with Cam Thomas from mock 1.....mock 2 gives us a complete back in Mathews (releasing TJ made this a need), Chad Jones strengthens our depth at Safety (now that Rhodes is gone..this is a need), getting Hardy in the 3rd is money (pass rushing OLB, check!), and Freddie Barnes fills the need for our slot WR w/ great hands. I don't know too much about the 5th and 6th round choices....but I do know they fill positions of need as well....so you can't go wrong there...especially if they can be developed over time. both Mocks are great....but i see more value coming out of mock 2....great stuff, Mr.E
I was taking a look at Jones from LSU and he's a big dude, could be a good fallback option should we not get Thomas. If we go offense 1st or trade out of the 1st, depending on how far down we go, I wouldn't be upset with this kid.
Actually, the more I look at it, I may want to change my vote to Mock B. As MBG pointed out, B is an excellent upgrade to our roster. The Thomas' are a nice start, but we have 3 potential starters in Mock B. And, you guys have raved about Barnes, I'd be excited to see what he could do surrounded by what should shape up to be an excellent offense. I really think Keller's confidence is booming after his stellar performance in the playoffs, and Sanchez also will have a ton of confidence throwing him the ball. Opens everything up for everybody else, too.
i cant see e. thomas falling past the cowboys ... mr e, would you trade our 1st and 2nd for someones 1st and 3rd to move ahead of the boys if thomas slips to the 20s?
It really makes me wonder how serious the tendonitis in his knees is. Do NFL clubs see it as a bad enough problem that they are not even wanting to look at him? He had a hell of a year this year, but I still think he's a late round guy.
I'd be surprised if Thomas fell to #29, but if he did, it should be a no-brainer. I'm not a fan of going with a RB in the first round and I think that 3-4 DE should be more of an emphasis given that we're going to lose a starter and the other one is entering his 11th season.
Now thats Tempting, but I don't think I could pull the trigger. Then end of the second round talent is going to be very good this year. I think its more likle we trade out of the first to get back inot the second and pick up an addition pick or two.v Then again I say that every year and we move up in the first.
While both of these would be dream scenarios, I picked #2. I would really like to see a 2nd RB to take the heat off of Greene, even if we still have Washington (although I hope we don't). I also think that adding Cromartie was a real game changer for the secondary, we can use Chad Jones in a rotation until he gets comfortable, with less pressure being out there. Hardy could be a real monster and I love the potential of Barnes, based on what I've read here and other sites. I'm no college expert, I just think the 2nd one really balances our team out nicely. The way we're built now, if we fall behind we're hooped. Like I said though, either would be awesome.
how can it be tampering when the players arent even on a team yet? i hear you about the trading down. if thomas isnt there, thats the move i would like them to make
