Guys, I've been working on two mocks tonight. With our recent moves, it's really hard to pick which direction our team should go in, so I figured I'd ask for some help. I've created two mocks. Read over the selections and vote for the mock you'd rather have. After you vote, please let everyone know why you made your choice. Both mocks kind of deal with the "what if" scenario. After a couple of days of voting, I'll adjust the winning mock and give some analysis on the selections made. Mock 1 1st Round: Earl Thomas, S, Texas 2nd Round: Cam Thomas, NT, North Carolina 4th Round: Kyle Calloway, OT, Iowa 5th Round: Andre Dixon, RB, UCONN 6th Round: Adrian Tracy, 3-4 OLB, William and Mary 7th Round Armanti Edwards, QB/WR, Appalachian State or Mock 2 1st Round: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State 2nd Round: Chad Jones, S, LSU 4th Round: Greg Hardy, 3-4 OLB, Ole Miss 5th Round: Freddie Barnes, WR, Bowling Green 6th Round: Corey Peters, 3-4 DE, Kentucky 7th Round Jeff Byers, OL, Southern Cal
(MOCK 2)A first round RB? your crazy to much depth in that position in draft to draft early We have depth problems with OL,DE,OLD,SS/FS that we should deal with. MOCK 1 looks more reasonable
Why wait around for a mid round running back prospect when we can draft the most complete back in the draft at the back of the first round? You act like I don't know the draft is deep at multiple positions. We're not going to be able to fill every hole in this draft. In both mocks, I went after players that can give the Jets the best chance to win in 2010 and beyond.
That was pretty much my thinking. I also don't think we should draft a RB in round 1. However, I do like the Freddie Barnes and Hardy picks. But adding Earl Thomas to our D trumps all, so I went with 1.
got to go with the first one. The thomas' would make our defence better and much younger. we need to get more quality bodies on both lines and the second waits to long to address that.
Yeah, Fridge Perry style. And Earl completing the secondary makes this defense go from good to unfair.
The Thomas/Thomas combo made A hard to pass up, but I went with B. I think the Mathews/Barnes picks would make our offense good enough to make up for a defense that might not perform as well (since we neglected to take pressure off Jenkins with a draft pick in that scenario). Mock A keeps the team the way it is, stifling defense with a sparse offense. Mock B makes us more balanced, and ultimately more dangerous. But if we were to lose an offensive lineman to injury in the post-Mock B scenario, we'd regret not getting good depth earlier. I'd like to see Calloway in Hardy's place as the 4th round pick. I'd be happy with either one, as both are very close to fulfilling all of our needs. I know every time I tried to imagine a position-based mock, I always ended up leaving out one position due to lack of picks.
I voted mock 1 because anyway we can get Thomas is alright with me. Both mocks would help us immensely, though, so it's tough to quibble with either one. I'm assuming you think we're keeping Leon, right? I think we'll have him in September.
I'm a big fan of re-stocking the trenches early. I went with #1. Earl Thomas would thrive with our coaches, too.
Thomas won't be available at #29. After an impressive combine he has locked himself into the #2 safety spot in this draft and I cannot see him getting past San Francisco again at #17. A safety tandem of Goldson and Thomas for them would be fantastic. 1 - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame 2 - Thaddeus Gibson, OLB, Ohio State 4 - Reshad Jones, S, Georgia 5 - Torrell Troup, NT, UCF 6 - Clifton Geathers, DE, USC (Carolina) 7 - Brandon Minor, RB, UM I know you're not going to like that I put this in here, but I something along these lines makes more sense. A truly dynamic slot WR for Sanchez, a high motor high upside OLB who is fluid and aggressive, a safety who would be a 1st day pick in a normal draft that can play FS or SS, a developmental NT, a giant body for DE with upside, and a very talented RB who struggled with some injuries in his senior year and played in a system not suited for his bruising style. As for your poll, you obviously have to go with the 1st one.
You get what I was trying to do with these mocks. The first mock would definitely improve our team in certain aspects, but we're going to have a top caliber defense regardless. The second mock would give the Jets a home run threat at running back and a slot wideout. Kyle Calloway isn't a exactly the most versatile player. I think he'll only be able to play right tackle. Jeff Byers can play multiple positions (guard and center). He'll probably end up at guard in the pros. The main reason he'll last that long is because of injuries. Landing a guy like Greg Hardy in the fourth would be an extremely good value selection, but it would also be a gamble. Hardy is a first round talent that can't stay healthy. I'm also not exactly sure how much he wants to play this game. If he gets his head on straight, he'll be a terror of the edge.
I'm a big fan of Matthews. Ideally, I'd combine the two drafts, but Earl Thomas is enough for me to pick number one.
You're right, I don't like that you added your mock to this thread. It wasn't necessary. I'm considering Braylon Edwards as a draft pick in this draft. We gave up two 2010 selections for the guy, so I'm not so sure our front office will take a receiver high. Thaddeus Gibson is a good prospect, but I still think he's a mid-third, early fourth type player. Also, I think Mike Tannenbaum will stay away from him because he's an Ohio State pass rusher. I know that Gibson, Schegel, and Gholston have barely anything in common, but Tannenbaum knows the fan base would absolutely shit a brick if he took another Buckeye after the Schlegel and Gholston mistakes. Freddie Barnes played in an offense that inflated his numbers, but I don't know how people can't consider him "truly dynamic" as well. The guy's only played receiver for two years. A first day pick now is a first round pick. Reshad Jones isn't a first round talent. Clifton Geathers is a greedy idiot. The kid's comparing himself to Julius Peppers. He left early for absolutely no reason. I wouldn't be surprised if he went undrafted, and I was high on him when he was Gamecock. I can definitely see the Niners selecting Earl Thomas...but for some reason, Singletary is really high on Taylor Mays. There's a small possibility Thomas falls to us. I mentioned that both of my mocks had the "what if" factor. Ryan Mathews more than likely won't be there at 29 either.
No, I'm just not going to add an extra second rounder into my mock until a move is set in stone. I honestly want to see him signed by another team. A lot of the players that will get selected in the second round of this year's mock would be first rounders any other year.
That's why if Thomas doesn't stay on the board for us, I would love to see us trade down. I like Odrick, but if we can get a 2nd and a 3rd for our 1st, I wouldn't exactly cry into my beer.
I find both your mocks unrealistic. I see little hope of both Thomas and Thomas falling to the Jets for mock #1. I would be ecstatic if they did. For mock #2 I see no chance of Matthews getting to the jets at 29. Would it be great? Hell ya! I just don't see it happening. Barnes in the 5th is perhaps a little early but good value. great attempts at filling the Jets needs, but not close to what will fall in April IMO.
Earl Thomas lasting that long is a bit of a stretch, but if Taylor Mays goes ahead of him, he could slip into the mid-to-late twenties of the first round. Cam Thomas is a late second to third rounder. It's very possible for him to be there when our second round pick comes up...especially if Mount Cody slips into the second round. I think Linval Joseph may move ahead of Thomas as well. There's really only two teams that have a need for Mathews ahead of us. The Chargers and the Texans. I see him fitting in with the Texans a lot better, but they may be go for a back later in the draft because of Arian Foster's success at the end of the season. Freddie Barnes is a 4th or 5th round prospect. I strongly believe that if he was invited to the combine, he'd be a third rounder.
