STs are very important. We are losing key STers, repalcebale guys? sure but thats another question that needs to be asnwered which wouldn't have to be if we retaiend him. We are also on the verge of going in a different direction at LS, we have been spoiled for about 15 years w/ excellent long snappers- they are playing around w/ low $ positions that they don't have to play around w/.
This is where my confusion comes in. A lot of guys in this thread don't understand this position and act like we're complaining like we lost Mangold. No, it's just that these ARE key guys on special teams and they don't make much money, so like you said, why mess around? In an uncapped year with so little money involved, these are the only reasons I can think of. 1) The players are beginning to show decline. 2) They have solid replacements on the roster already. Other than that, it's confusing. God forbid we're lining up to kick the game winner in the AFCC and the new long snapper launches 10 yards behind the holder.
I don't have a problem with replacing a gunner, because while it requires aggression and spee and nice angles, it's a position that can easily be filled by Ihedigbo until the Jets teach up a rookie that they draft. Dearth is another story. While I liked to make fun of the way he looks, he's easily been the most dependable player on the roster, for what he does. He did have a couple of bad snaps this year, but that's not enough to let the guy go. I can only hope that Tanner Purdum is a reasonable replacement. We are having a lot of turnover on STs this season, but this also seemed to be one of our worst STs seasons (outside of FGs) in a long time.
What are they gonna lose everybody? Team goes to the AFC Championship game and proceeds all the guys who looked like leaders in the lockerroom, Wallace Wright, Thomas Jones etc. leave? Why are they being so freakin cheap in an uncapped year?
in my opinion these guys are low $ is the exact reason they are being allowed to walk. the reason guys who are awesome on special teams make no money is that they are a dime a dozen in this league. the key to good special teams is good athletes and good coaching. guys who are great athletes but not great football players are always available. we already have the coaching so now it's just a matter of plugging in a guy on the roster or signing an undrafted rookie or two.
I can't believe it took a whole page for one post like this. I love what wright brought as a gunner, but that was all he brought. For a team desperate for a slot option guy he could never make it as one and that is very telling. Hard worker by all means, but replaceable.
What's the point of replacing a known quantity at a low cost with an unknown quantity at a low cost? We know these guys are top notch at what they do and they don't cost much. Sure they can be replaced, but will they be replaced with the same level of performance? There's a risk involved here.
People do realize that tendering him would have cost us over a million, right? I think the number would have been $1.176M. That's an awful lot of money to pay a guy for maybe 10 plays a game, if even. Instead the Jets allowed him to dip his foot into the FA pool. He did, and he found a deal available with his hometown team. If you're going to make peanuts, make them at home. I think this is a lot less Jets being cheap and a lot more Wright doing what is best for himself.
the only answer i have to that is that the jets didn't want to give a guy like wright anything more than he had been making. if wright signed for the vets minimum i agree it is a puzzling move.
At what level did he perform? He was a very good STs player that was taking up a roster spot for a skill position. We have a rookie QB. He's going to need as many options as he can get in order to be able to become more effective. Having a WR who can't play WR at all is not a luxury that this team can afford at the moment. It's not about money, it's about personnel.
Assuming leon is back Sanchez will have Braylon, Cotch, Keller and leon as weapons to throw to and that's before we make another move. a 5th WR isn't getting much time on offense anyway.
I mean if it's a numbers game I can understand but we have better receivers that barely saw the field as a WR in Clowney and B. Smith. Like junc said, how much time is that WR spot really going to see the field?
Past Braylon and Cotch, we have Clowney, a deep threat who can't run routes, Brad Smith, who has trouble with that whole catching thing, and runs equally crappy routes, and some other bums who don't usually even dress on Sundays. What we don't have is a slot receiver, a 4 th depth option that can step in under duress and be effective. When you are in that situation, you stockpile on possible options to improve in that area. When you have a STs warrior who has proven over the years that he will never translate into a wideout, it's a luxury you cannot afford. Special teams gunners are hardly difficult to replace. You want to cry over Feely and Dearth? I feel your pain. But this one makes no sense.
I'd rather get rid of Clowney who has had a million chances but never done anything b/c at least Wright can play STs. we need WR depth but not at the expense of one of our best STers.
I liked Wright for what he was here but he seems to be replacable. It's not like we lost Brad Smith and Wright is really a poor man's Brad Smith.
