I really don't see the Pats offering enough to make it worth our while to decline the offer sheet. Too much turnover at the position is not a good thing unless Leon has a high market value. If we can match a decent offer and keep him for a few more years, I'd imagine we do so.
I don't want to dump Leon, but I'll tell you how I feel about this. I think this is pure, unfounded speculation by a bunch of irresponsible 'sources', as reported by a rag tabloid, which is being pawned by another bunch of weak media outlets as some sort of inside scoop instead of the scoop of dogshit that it is. Well, you didn't write that you were basing your comment on yards per game. All you wrote was that Jones had "putrid numbers" in Tampa Bay. He had 137 carries for 627 yards. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry. It's unfair to knock the guy for his season with the Bucs. He only started 3 games. Look at what he did in the last four games which is when he finally received regular playing time- 20 carries for 89 yards 34 carries for 134 yards 17 carries for 73 yards 13 carries for 68 yards It's difficult for me to call that "putrid." If Leon ultimately leaves this team, I don't think it will be for a 2nd rounder. I think the team that wants him will probably try to negotiate for at max a third. Question is do you or anyone else who rather him gone for a pick think the Jets would or should accept a third as compensation?
If Leon Washington goes anywhere, it will be for a second rounder. However, if we had to settle for a third, I'd do it. I really don't see a place on this team for Washington.
There is no "good" reason the Jets would accept a 3rd Round pick. The Jet's may lose Leon if a Team comes in and offers a "poison pill" contract the Jets can't match.
For the hundredth time, this will be Washington's last year with the Jets - no matter what. There are more important players on this team to pay. The Jets should get something out of him while they still can.
Not you, man. It just blows my mind that so many people consider him to be a "star" player, when he's clearly a role player. The guy's got an idiot for an agent, and he's going to demand big money even if he's mediocre this season. The guy won't be back with this team in 2011, so what's the point of keeping him?
Keels has fucked Leon's mind over and over!!! The Jets were fine without Leon most of the year. Draft Michael Smith in a late Round and you may have similar production. I really think in a few days you are going to see Leon make some visits.
I'm mostly with you, but if he could be a difference maker in a superbowl run there's a point to keeping him. Even if it's only for one year.
I really don't think he'll make that much of a difference. ...not anymore at least. Brad Smith is a better option in the Wildcat offense. When I look at this team, Washington's best value is as a kick returner. Who knows if he'll be able to return to form? Brad Smith showed last year that he can fill that role too. I don't think we'll be able to find a change-of-pace/scat back replacement right away, but our offense doesn't really need one...especially if we take a back within the first two rounds.
This. I'm not going to talk about getting a player (like Rolle or Atogwe) or losing a player (Leon) until I start hearing this "news" from a reliable source.
There were also questions about Tiki's size and ability to carry the load full time early on in his career. Barber did not finish his career at the same size he initially came into the league. I don't remember the exact number but he gained something like 10-15 extra pounds of muscle mid way through his NFL career in order to get stronger and help with the fumbling problems he was having. That said I don't believe that Washington can take the punishment that comes with being the primary ball carrier either. But that is just an opinion based on the eye test not some official Leon file that's been passed from college to the pros. I remember that once he was finally given the chance in 2006 he pretty much carried us that year. Didn't think he could then but he did. The kid got a big heart.
I can see Leon being very effective at RB after Greene pounds the defense down. We need 3 good backs in this offense.
