Could Coles be our old vet reciever ?

right salary = minimum wage

 

I think Coles would be a decent 4th receiver. I don't think he is durable enough to play every game.

I'd like to see him finish his career as a Jet, but I don't think he can be a reliable 3. I'd rather have Brad Smith there, although I'm not sure he's the answer either.

 

I'm not saying there aren't factors to consider, but it would be silly to argue that with a reasonable contract (and Coles isn't going to get better than a reasonable contract anywhere at this point) that LC isn't a significant upgrade to the #3 WR position. His competition is Brad Smith.

 

Just a random thought I hadn't heard mentioned yet on who could help out at WR: anyone know what happened to Marcus Henry? I think he was a 5th round pick a couple of years ago, was tall and had an upside. I think he was on the practice squad. I wonder if he's had any development towards making the team. I know it sounds ridiculous to discuss a PS-player as someone who can contribute at WR, but people are discussing the benefits of having a young WR, I've heard it takes longer for WR's to become NFL-ready than other positions, and clearly Brad Smith and Clowney are not the answer.

but the contract situation won't matter....because he'll stub his toe and land on the IR again.

I still think he is a waste of space on this team should he show up.

Just-released Laveranues Coles could sign with New York Jets for third time

Anybody interested in a 3.0 version of Laveranues Coles? The Jets apparently are.

With at least one opening in their thin receiving corps, the Jets haven't ruled out the possibility of re-signing Coles for a third stint with the team, the Daily News has learned.

Coles, 32, was released last week after one season with the Bengals, and he told a New Jersey newspaper he's interested in a return to the Jets. He was cut by the Jets last February, a mutual parting in which he agreed to forfeit $6 million in guaranteed money in exchange for having the final year of his contract voided. The Jets tried to re-sign him for less money, but the Bengals offered a richer deal.

Now the Jets are looking for a third or fourth receiver to play behind starters Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards (restricted free agent). They also have Brad Smith (RFA) and David Clowney, although neither is regarded as a No. 3 receiver.

The Jets will take their time before making a decision on Coles, perhaps waiting until after the draft next month, but he might be an option if he agrees to a relatively modest one-year contract. He's definitely on their radar.

In this case, the Jets wouldn't be restricted by the new "Final Four" rule because Coles was released by a team and isn't an unrestricted free agent. The rule, designed to prevent the top four playoff teams from spending wildly in an uncapped year, restricts the Jets from signing an unrestricted free agent until they lose one. They haven't lost one yet.

Another former ex-Jet is on the market, tight end Chris Baker (cut last week by the Patriots), but the chances of him returning are less likely than Coles.

Coles, who played with the Jets from 2000-02 and 2005-08, is coming off his least productive season since his rookie year. He caught only 43 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns, confirming opinions that he lost a step. But Coles believes he was a bad fit in the Bengals' offense and still is capable of being productive for a few more years.

RHODES MAP: GM Mike Tannenbaum, in a phone interview yesterday, commented for the first time on the Kerry Rhodes trade to the Cardinals. "He was a good player for us ... but we just felt like with our depth at the position, it was an opportunity to pick up two picks and get good value," he said, referring to the fourth- and seven-round choices in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The Jets have Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith and James Ihedigbo at the position. Tannenbaum acknowledged he probably will add another safety. ... The Jets are trying to re-sign blocking TE Ben Hartsock. ... By unloading Rhodes, RB Thomas Jones and CB Lito Sheppard, the Jets dumped more than $20 million in 2010 salary in an uncapped year, fueling speculation they might be tightening the purse strings because of the labor uncertainty and the costs of the new stadium. "Not at all," Tannenbaum said. "Our mandate from Woody (Johnson) is to go win games. If we see an opportunity, we have the resources to go do it - within reason, of course." He noted the high cost of tenders for their restricted free agents, approximately $13 million.

 

I get where you're going, but think about this. I don't know if Henry is on the PS or not, but if he is, he's behind both Smith and Clowney on the depth chart.

 

Henry was signed to the PS again.

 

6 rec, 48 Yards, a TD and a fumble lost. The Begnals needed someone to step up opposite Ocho and got a very little out of Coles. He fumbled on the opening drive to give the Jets great feild position and was so-so afterwards. He was a game changer, for us, in that game.

The Jets need to sign thier own players. Getting rid of existing contracts that where not being lived up to (Rhodes) and high priced aging talent (Jones) are smart moves that will help us down the line, but in typical Cimini fasion he needs to only coment on the doom and gloom aspect of it.

On top of that Coles is one of the best run blocker WRs in the NFL.

 

Coles may not always be healthy, but he rarely misses any games. If I remember correctly, he started every game for us in 2008 and only missed a few games last season. I think he only missed 5-6 games in his entire career as a Jet.

 

Of course Cimini is. There wasn't another beat writer that got more hits to his articles using out-of-context quotes from Coles than Cimini.

 

For some reason, the first thing that popped into my head when I read this was 'They signed that POS Henry again.'

 

I hope they do sign Coles for the slot.. Then the focus of the first three picks could be defense. Preferably DE, OLB, and S
