Hypothetical: Jets draft a RB in the second round, let's call him "Goby Terhart" out of "Banford", and complete the RB stable. -Greene gets that starting job, taking most of the pitch, trap, and sweep carries. -"Terhart" takes the majority of the inside and short yardage runs; dives, blasts...etc. -Leon gets pushed back into his roll from two years ago and sees mostly screen passes and draws, but his roll gets expanded to include slot WR duties, running and catching underneath routes and generally drawing underneath coverage away from Keller. Maybe 5-7 solid running plays/game but the same number of targets in the passing game. That's the split that makes the most sense to me.
+1 The only thing hypothetical about this is guessing who we'll draft. I think the scenario is very realistic. If the Jets bring in a back with their first or second round picks, he'll be the one splitting carries with Shonn Greene. Washington is a change-of-pace back. Drafting a guy like "Terhart", would give the Jets a versatile enough back to line up at fullback as well. So, we'd probably see a lot of Washington lining up behind him in the backfield.
All kidding aside, Gerhart was not exactly a piss-poor receiver. If Schottenheimer wants to open up the passing game more and go back to his throw-happy days, then that particular formation seems like it could be effective and let Sanchez get into a passing rhythm without exposing him early.
In order: (Assuming Brandon Graham is gone) OLB Sergio Kindle OG Mike Iupati DT Terrence Cody RB Ryan Mathews WR Golden Tate
If I had to compare Jahvid Best to anyone, I think I'd go for someone like Brian Westbrook over a Chris Johnson or even Leon. It's a real small nit-picking type thing, but I think at his heart Chris Johnson is a one cut and burn type back. He's the kind of runner that will see a spot and go full blast for it, and with his speed if that spot's big enough he's a ghost. CJ Spiller is to me the same way, can stop and shake a guy, but 90% of the time can just run by you. Plus, I think the two CJ's are much more likely to absorb contact if they need to. The great thing about this kind of speed is that a RB will rarely get hit with a guy going full blast. For Best, he's a stop and start kind of guy, a guy that can catch a pass, turn, and be off in a split second. It's how guys that are small and slight survive, and even though Westbrook added some weight as his career went on, he was never very big. Now can Jahvid be a guy that carries the ball 250 times every year? Probably not, but neither was BW and he was still tremendously effective. 200 carries and 60 catches from Best would be a great addition to any team.
I like the idea of bringing in another back, cant hurt to have more fresh legs as the season goes on. However, even if a Matthews or Best is available when the Jets pick in round one I would be extremely opposed to getting a running back. Maybe in the second round, and definitely after that I wouldn't mind getting a running back. However, keep in mind, at least for the moment, picking a third running back is a luxury pick (especially considering Danny Whoodhead is still on the roster) I know the Cromartie deal makes our draft more flexible, but IMO we still have bigger needs than a third running back
I don't get why people are down on Leon Washington. "Change of pace" back? Give me a break. I know you are in love with Matthews and he may turn out be be a good player but it ain't happening here. You can get good RBs later in the draft and we already have two good ones. Leon Washington can do anything and everything you want from the RB position. I hope he returns to his old self. People who say he can't run between the tackles are just making assumptions based on his size (I guess). Put on the tape.
Leon is capable of doing what is asked of a RB in this system, but with that kind of horrific major injury you just don't know how he is going to return. I doubt he is the same exact player. That just doesn't happen. A guy like Gerhart (not "terhart" you silly geese :lol works in the late 2nd because of his versatility as well. Think Ron McClain... but white - so the fanbase will anoint him a HOFer within the hour he is drafed.
Danny Woodhead doesn't really count as a running back. Like I said earlier, if the Jets draft a running back with one of their first two picks, he won't be the third option. Washington will be the third option. If the Jets can't re-sign Thomas Jones or bring in a capable veteran running back, then running back becomes one of our biggest needs. Shonn Greene and Leon Washington are not capable of carry the load, even with shared carries. This teams needs a third back. I don't give a damn where we get him: first round, second round, or free agency. It just has to be done.
I know we spoke to Andre Dixon out of UConn, who is a late round RB. This makes a lot more sense than a first or second rounder to me. We've got Greene and he's a stud, why would we spend an early pick and a big(ger) contract when we don't NEED a stud. Even if we want to split carries, which I agree we will, we don't need another Shonn Greene, we need the Chester Taylor to our Adrian Peterson. So for #29: I think we would all jizz for Brandon Graham, but in reality: I like Odrick, Iupati (for the future), Hughes (despite some high-profile disagreement on the board, he seems to fit our passrushing need pretty well in my opinion), Price and Weatherspoon (because they seem to fit Rex's personality and I think he'd find a way to use them). Though no one asked, there are a TON of players at positions of need that I like for that second rounder: Cam Thomas, Alex Carrington, Torrell Troup, Eric Norwood, Chris Cook, Devin McCourty. And later: Major Wright, Linval joseph, Shaun LAuvao, AJ Edds, Joique Bell, Andre Dixon. Those are pretty much all the players whose careers I'll pay attention to no matter where they end up. EDIT: and Kerry Meier and Kavell Conner
My boy. I love him, and I want him badly. I don't think we're in a position to get him, unless they go after him with their 2nd rounder. To be totally honest, I think he'll end up right in the range of that pick, but I think if I throw that idea out there now people's minds will explode in this board.
Tate Cody Best 3-4 end OTB. (many screaming for OLB, but if the CS didn't feel like they could get SOMETHING out of Gladys..He'd have been cut and we'd have pursued Dansby.) They would have been eating money on Gladys, bit it will be no different if they draft one at 29. Also Dansby is a proven commodity, at least more so than the 29th overall) I'll be shocked if we go OLB in RD1 or 2.
Gladys is in a make or break season right now. With such a high risk, there is no reason to not be prepared by selecting another OLB. Although if the Jets decide to hold off for one year, I would love to see them target Romeus out of Pitt(homer).
I would completely shocked and disappointed if the Jets took a RB or a WR with their first round pick. Those are NOT areas of need. I think you will see a defensive player picked at that spot. With Greene at RB and Cotchery and Edwards at WR, why waste a first round pick on a player who will not be a starter?????????????????
You forgot to take your finger off of the question mark key... This isn't a one back league anymore. The feature back is an endangered species. Shonn Greene was a heck of a pick last year, but he's proven that he's a fragile player. We need to bring in another powerful runner to share some carries with him.
Why did we trade up for Dustin Keller when Baker was at TE? You have to fortify your #1 position on offense for the offensive scheme to work. A RB at 29 isn't a bad idea, but only if the top 2 prospects are there.
