Doesn't work like that or else every team would do it. You can't restructure your own players this off season and have their salary + prorated portion of salary cap equal more then 30% more then last years. You also can't restructure your own players to have a huge increase this year and decrease drastically next year. They put the 50% rule in effect so that a players salary can't decrease from 2010 to 2011 by more then 50%. The rules were basically created so that players under contract could not get rewarded with big contracts during the one year of no cap.
EXACTLY. I suspect that once it's known for sure that there will be no CBA and thus no cap this season (I think that deadline is in May), we will see some of these players sign long term deals before this season starts. I suspect that will include Mangold, Harris, Brick and Revis. The big bonuses that will be paid presumably will not count going forward if a cap is later reinstated.
Those rules are for the 2010 season. Those rules govern what a team can do between now and March of 2011. What happens after that is anyones guess.
The rules he is talking about are concerning cap hits, and contract rules for the uncapped year in the final year of the current CBA, which expires on opening day 2011. Without a cap, there is no hit. Which is what we are kinda looking at right now. The new rules are being negotiated by the owners and the NFLPA, and probably won't even be known to fans and press until 2011, probably a while after an agreement is made. Once there is an agreement in place, there will undoubtedly be clauses in place to help teams make the transition from uncapped year to capped year. Which is why i can't help but view the premise of this thread, as well as this post from another thread: ... as alarmist BS. What's the use of tearing your clothes and pulling your hair over rules that don't exist yet?
As I said if they have a cap we are screwed. If the salary cap from 2009 continued on we would have serious problems keeping all of our own players. Add to the fact that our front office continues to trade draft picks for players that are on the verge of a large second contract. If they have no salary cap then the only issue with keeping these players would be Woody writing bigger checks. The 30 and 50 rules apply to this season. It would be very nice to give Mangold a huge contract now and get the signing bonus out of the way but it's not possible based on the previous agreement for the uncapped 2010 season. My major point is that regardless of what happens in 2011 and beyond, the front office has to stop giving away draft picks every year. Eventually having draft after draft where we only add one or two players will catch up with any team.
Not when we have a win now team, I will gladly mortgage our future for a championship now. We've had great draft too the past few years, the talent pool has been picked apart very well by Tanny.
That's something that we do not disagree on. While I like an aggressive approach in the FO, there has to come a time when draft picks contribute to the team in terms of quality depth. There may be some merit to the idea that 3-4 players that the FO is sure will contribute might be worth 7-8 players that the FO is sort of sure will contribute... but if our scouting department is really that good, they should be able to find players well in the lower rounds. Part of me thinks that one of the biggest reasons Tanny chose Rex was for his penchant to develop UDFAs so well, so MT could continue ot use draft picks as trade bait.
