Why the fuck should we need a Calvin Pace contract thread? To inform you why he will be on the team for the next three years for sure.

Not many of you know there is NO WAY this guy is cut before 2013 so when we are talking about drafting future OLB's keep in mind we have one already on the team who'll be here for a while even though he's turning 30 this year. This is Calvin's contract:

2010: 7 mill, 21 mill in dead money (30yrs old)

    2011: 7.1 mill, 9 mill in dead money (31)

    2012: 8.3 mill, 6 mill in dead money (32)

    2013: 9.5 mill, 3 mill in dead money (33)

There is no way he leaves before 2012 but also no way he sees that kind of money at 33 in 2013... so when talking about OLBs of the future keep in mind that Pace is here until 2012.

I hope next year we have a Pace, B. Thomas, A. Thomas rotation with occasional sightings on Westerman and Gholston.

by the time 2013 gets here, 9.5 mill could be the cheapest contract on the jets.

well believe it or not, at least Pace hasnt already started showing his age. So its probably likely he has 2 seasons left at an elite level which just so happens to be approaching 2012 when its time for him to start to become a rotational guy...

You're assuming that there will be a cap again.

Yup... but still this off-season showed with TJ that NFL clubs don't like to just throw money around and will always be on a budget... cap or no cap...

If we operate on the assumption there will be a cap we are safe under all circumstances... if we start operating there won't be one and in 2011 a cap comes back in place we'd be fucked...

In 2011, if Pace is cut we save -1.9 million
In 2012, if Pace is cut we save 2.3 million

I don't get the premise that we can't cut him until 2013..he's a good player so I don't see us cutting him anyway but still

Please explain this to us with your in-depth knowledge of the New York Jets salary cap, and also your in-depth knowledge of how the new salary cap, which has not even been negotiated yet, is going to work, and also your in-depth knowledge of the rules that will be put into place to transition from the uncapped year to the new CBA capped year - how we will be screwed.

This would be interesting to hear.

Pace is the one guy that I feel has earned his big free-agent contract. The nature of free agency is such that there will always be a couple of big-ticket guys on every team due to trying to fill a gaping hole in FA. Ours are Pace, Faneca, Woody, and Scott.

They all proved to be good signings at the time as each and every one stepped in and performed as advertised. However, I would put forth that Pace has and continues to justify all of his contract, and to a lesser extent, Woody. Faneca and most especially Scott, on the other hand, have not performed up their to their salary level.

    edit:

gave this discussion its own thread.
