Now I know all about the final 8 rule but I wonder if we can find a way to sign this kid. He's only 28 and he'd be a perfect fit for us as a DE... plus he's been in REx's D since he got in the league. What do you guys think? PS our best bet in signing him is if Feely signs somwhere for 1.5 and then we can use taht money to sign him.
Feely gets Janikowski money... its the only way.. ain't gunna happen though. Feely will either return to the jets at a price similar to his 1.5 mil... or, he gets us a decent depth player when we sign someone of equal 1st year salary.
I wonder if there is any way to work around the F8 rule... like roster/signing options or bonuses and stuff like that
Dwan Edwards only made 1.2 million last year. How much is he expected to get in a new contract ? I really havent heard much about this guy and hes barely played. I cant see a guy with 5 seasons in the nfl barely 100 tackles and 2 sacks commanding huge money ? That said I can understand why he hasnt started much since the Ravens defensive line is monstorous.
The bigger issue is timing. We can't sign anybody for any price until one of the Jets UFAs are signed elsewhere. They're mostly all likely to get signed somewhere, but it could be a week or two before other teams are ready to focus on the Ben Hartsocks of the world. If Dwan Edwards lasts as long, you can bet on the Jets giving him a call.
He broke into the starting line-up this year after being out all 2008... I can see him asking for around 2 mill...
i would expect that too. Feely has to get a 2 mil contract for him to come here. And then he has to stay healthy and productive if Rhodes gets traded. EDIT: MAYBE IF I HAD A BRAIN I'D REALIZE WHO IS WHO AND PULL MY HEAD FROM MY ASS. GOD HELP ME. LET'S PUT A DEFENSIVE END AT SAFETY... IT WORKS IN MADDEN RIGHT? RIGHT! JACKASS, I'LL KILL YOU (not you mambo)
An NFL rep was recently quoted as saying that signing bonuses do not count towards the 30% rule, but I'm fairly certain they count towards the initial value rule. Roster bonuses would be a great way to keep initial value low, but they DO count toward 30%. Circumventing F8P is just not happening.
If Feely gets $1.5 mil this yr, then Dwan can be signed at $1.5 in 2010, $1.95 in 2011, $2.53 in 2012 and $3.3 in 2013. Thats 4 years $9.28 mils.
CBAs have a whole Article dedicated to circumventing. I find that hilarious. Its like "hey, don't you try anything funny... damn it" I like Legalese - its a cool language.
Does anyone know how close the salary of Feely and Edwards would have to be to sign Edwards ? (ok let me explain what I mean) Like if Feely signs elsewhere for say 1.6 million are we allowed to sign someone as long as their salary is close to his (ie +- 10% ?) So that wed be able to sign Edwards for like 1.8 million ? Just trying to figure out if theres any leeway, I mean for all I know you might be able to pay the new guy 20-30% more so as long as youre not cutting an 800k guy and replacing him with Peppers or something.
Hah it's not that bad, what team has two starters with names that start with a D and have a W in it which happen to be 2 positions we need that may be available?
I would like to resign Douglas. I thought he did a good job for us last season. But I wouldnt mind bringing in Edwards as well as one could be used for depth. Its also time to start looking into drafting D-Lineman. We are starting to get old at that posistion.
Even if roster bonuses didn't count toward the 30% rule, you'd have to convince a player to take that non-gauranteed and delayed money over whatever other teams are offering. I'd really like to add Dwan, but it really seems like getting him or any other non-cut UFA is just so damn difficult to do. Feely is our UFA likely to land the biggest deal, and kickers don't get scooped up in the opening hours of free agency, he could be on the market for weeks. The Final 8 stuff is a total bummer. On the plus side, lots of players are getting cut, I just saw that the Redskins released Cornelius Griffin, who was a pretty good lineman before he went to that black hole of a team in Washington, maybe he's still got the goods. An abundance of cut players is the only chance the Jets have of adding quality players without trading away stuff we don't want to lose.
