I'd rather draft someone. I don't see any value in a player who won't tackle. If you feel that it doesn't matter, tell that to the Chargers fans who watched Greene get into the endzone because Cromartie couldn't be bothered to even throw a Kerry Rhodes-esque shoulder spear.
He's a corner, his value comes in his coverage ability, not in his "A" gap tackling ability. Granted, he needs an attitude adjustment in the tackling department, but the overwhelming majority of the time he will not be responsible for making that type of tackle.
if the jets are pursueng him, tthey should show the chargers the gif's of his whiff on the green td and the last play of the game.
And use that to what drive down the asking price? I would rather somebody run that .gif under tanny's eyes to help him realize cro isnt New York Jet material.
hell's yea. when the time is big cro comes up small. how could we(the jets) give you anything more than a 4th........
I'm sure the Jets office staff has seen that .gif. someone in the sales or marketing dept. has emailed everyone about it for a good laugh. I hope it made it to the Pro Personnel dept too.
Yeah, the Jets are going to be linked with every CB on the market. But what about Richard Marshall, 2nd round tender in Carolina? I'm thinking that he'd be a better player than a rookie and given how late our 2nd is might be worth it? Especially if we get a pick from Rhodes?
There isnt a corner in the 3rd that can be as productive as Cromartie cud be right away, those of you that want rolle idk aout that he's a miami kid and i know he leaning there way if anything. And 8 mil is alot even more than ed reed gets... i think
I hate to be nitpicky but I keep hearing people refer to it as a "whiff"... which to me implies an attempt and miss at the tackle. What we saw was far from that. Dude was downright scared to get hit by Greene. That wuss should be so lucky for people to call it a whiff.
A corner that can't tackle is a liability. Revis is awesome not only because he can cover but he's tackling is amazing as well. Corners that can't tackle are a big issue in the run game.
I'm specifically talking about the type of tackle in that .gif that everyone is screaming about. If your corner is responsible for that type of tackle very often your defense probably sucks anyway. How often do we see revis making a tackle in the A gap? I can't remember any. You're talking about a 230 pound guy running downhill with a full head of steam. Corners generally aren't going to be in a position like that.
Here's a list I handpicked of several of the top CBs (including Cromartie for comparison) in the NFL and their overall (solo + asst) tackle total over the past three seasons (48 games). Granted some have different roles or get thrown at more than others; still each of these guys are usually covering the better WRs around the league. Total Tackles from 2007-2009 (games played) Cortland Finnegan: 228 (45) Champ Bailey: 202 (40) Revis Christ: 199 (48) Charles Woodson: 199 (46) Cromartie: 130 (48) Asante Samuel: 119 (47) Nnamdi Asomugha: 108 (46) I'm not sure what everyone seeks from Cromartie. The big hit? The guy who lays the wood? An intimidator? There aren't any cover CBs who possess those qualities, so if that's what you want, yer looking for a player that currently doesn't exist. He has peerless athleticism, elite speed, and a nose for the ball. Even if he isn't the surest tackler, he knows how to tackle. Furthermore, tackling technique can be taught, and we all know Rex, along with his staff, are good tutors. I'm not denying that Cromartie may have character issues and may be a bit soft, but he's a cover CB, and he performs that job pretty well. And keep in mind that this would be our #2 CB who would have the opportunity to play/study with Revis. I think people just need to stop overreacting to the Shonn Greene play and realize that Cromartie is a pretty good player whose Man-to-Man cover skills would fit nicely here.
When identifying players I want on this team I DO NOT want anyone who people are classifying as "may have character issues and may be a bit soft," especially when that person is actually trying to defend the guy. There are very good reasons why the Chargers are looking to dump a guy like this for very little in return.
Good post. I think people are really over reacting to that one play and over rating it in terms of what he would be brought in for - covering people.
