I was looking at a couple of prospects for the FB position and this guy comes to mind. Dickerson is rated as one of the top 5 FB prospects in this upcoming draft. He attended college at Pittsburgh (where our QB coach was the OC, hint hint) and was recruited as a WR, position in which he played his freshman year. He then became a TE (mostly blocking but also recieving) and a FB for his team... and also handled goal-line carries. Cavanaugh (his OC and now our QB coach) knows if there is some value here... I just think this kid could be very useful in the later rounds since we need a blocking TE who can also recieve some passes and mostly we need to groom someone behind T-Rich for a year at FB. The fact he also handled goal-line duties is good because we'd have one more option in those situations. Question is, will he be able to put up enough weight to become a lead blocker? If he falls to the 6th or 7th round I really wouldn't mind giving him a shot (if Cavanaugh agrees)... what do you say? PS Oh, he also was a reserve strong-side LB in case we need someone there .
I did not see that -.-" and it's funny because I read that thread... ops... merge please. PS glad to see we cam to the same conclusions though! PPS I'm really intrigued by J. Davis too... hope he shows something this year in TC.
Nothing has to be merged - my thread isn't just about Dickerson, like this one is. I really like Dorin Dickerson, especially in our offense.
Considering his 4.40 combine plus his 42 inch vertical could we be interested in this gut as a slot/H-back ? He surely would be more of a force in the blocking game than any slot WR and would a lot of versatility to our O than just a standard slot WR. However he doesn't really have a position in the NFL and a 2TE set composed of Keller and Dickerson would be really small (but really fast too)... thoughts?
I think the Jets will pass on this kid because of Dustin Keller, and that sucks. Dorin Dickerson would be a hell of a weapon out of the backfield and in the slot. Dickerson looked mediocre in all of the position drills, but he had an amazing vertical jump and one of the best 40s of ANYONE at the combine. I'm thinking someone will reach for this kid because of this workout.
Someone with Dickerson's hands, speed, size..etc. paired with Keller sounds great on offense but that really does not solve the issues(minor) that the Jets have at TE right now. As you said, Dickerson would give us a small TE corps and Keller can more or less do everything Dickerson can. As I said in another thread, if the Jets are going after a former Pitt TE, I would rather see them target Nate Byham. Not as gifted athletically as Dickerson, but Byham is a great in-line blocker and his size makes him a better H-Back/FB prospect overall. He's versatile enough to play on either the line or in the backfield as a blocker and his speed and hands make him a better threat than Hartsock. Byham has already proved that he can handle that role on a team, taking second-fiddle to another TE while still proving to be a solid contributor.
I don't understand why Dickerson isn't being considered at WR. So he's aggressive - doesn't that just mean he'd be a dominant perimeter blocker? I mean, he's WR size, WR speed, looks pretty fluid to me, what's he missing?
Dickerson could be a nice compliment player, but as a few people have said, Keller is more an H-Back than a true TE in my mind. Having the two wouldn't really add much to the offense without limiting what we did with 2 TE sets.
He dropped some weight before the Combine and it is yet to be seen if those pounds were legit body fat or water weight. If it is the latter then look for that 40 time to go up a hair. He played WR in college but was switched over to TE after playing LB at Pitt, and was switched to LB from WR. He's going to gain weight in the pros, probably around 20lbs, which would put him roughly around Dustin Keller's weight with an extra 2 inches. You can certainly split him out at WR or in the slot and he will be a great blocker but his best game is at TE.
I'd love to have this guy as a TE/WR/FB trio... think about it! 1) He's got WR speed and the body to play in the slot. 2) He can be used as a TE since he is very competent in blocking and has played TE in college 3) Occasionally we can run behind him since he's played some FB too. Having Dickerson on the team will confuse the shit out of opposing teams and he's versatility can be very helpful to a mind like Schotty!!!
Dickerson is an amazing athletic prospect but I really do not see him keeping that 40 time. He dropped about 20 lbs leading up to the combine which is going to slow him down enough to compromise his "WR speed". He played at 240 in college and I can only believe he will gain enough weight to get back to that point, if not more. Keller has the ability and potential to do pretty much everything up there. If we take a TE we should take someone who is more like Hartsock, a strong inline blocker with hopefully softer hands.
