You cannot count on coverage sacks in the NFL if you want to win in the playoffs. The QBs we are going to be up against to get to the Super Bowl are too good and get the ball out too quickly.
If we trade back, we can get Cody in the second and pick up another pick. If we stay where we are, we are in a good position to take Boo Robinson in the second round.
Contradicting what I just said about certainties in the draft, this could shake up completely differently. If someone like Brandon Graham drops, he could help the pass rush immensely.
It is different from the defense the Jets run but it was the same failed principle that Denver tried to implement and got Shanahan fired.
Having a better LB corps would be a better advantage. Let's say we have two shutdown corners. That takes out WRs #s 1 & 2. That still leaves the HB, TE, and slot WR as threats, three positions that gave the Jets trouble covering, especially TEs going over the middle. #2 CB was not a major issue until we met Manning, and it would not take Nnamdi Asomugha to shut down the #2 WR. Having Asomugha seems great, but other addictions can help this team better than he can.

I thought I was done with you, but u leave too much on the table to simply walk away. WHAT THE FUCK does that suppose to mean? Did u even watch the Jets this year? How the hell does he get pressure on the QB? Cuz he doesn't have to double cover with Revis on one side, freeing up one extra defender, usually a safety.

Rex Ryan has said it himself that having Revis gives him the option to send an extra defender in his blitzes only becuase he doesn't have to worry about double covering the #1 WR. Don't even start with me on this one. You are pretty misinformed. BTW, did u see what happened whenever opposing QBs tried to take on Revis? Incase you didn't watch the games, there were times in the games when Revis had more receptions than the WR he was covering.

This D was playing with a BACKUP NT in the entire second half of the season plus the playoffs. The D didn't seem to blow up until the AFCCG. U know what the hell we needed in that AFCCG? A corner who could cover, along with a healthy squad.

And the Steelers comment? Seriously? Do you have to have a shutdown corner to win? No. Does it help? I don't know Cato, you tell me? Does it help to have TWO shut down corners in a league where there probably aren't more than four or five 'almost' shutdown corners?

If theres a GM who can pull a silly fucking trade like this from his ass, it's Mike Tannenbaum.

I trust in our GM.. Make it happen.

The thing is alot of people are talking about drafting a corner in the first.....if you ask me if we can get ASO with our first round pick then I would pull the trigger. We know what he can do versus ending up with another version of the ghost with a player that is drafted. Now if we are only looking at an OLB with our first round pick then that idea is out....the draft is so up in the air. I would rather have ASO than any corners coming out in this years draft.

Yes, the numbers may have been better, but can you tell me with a straight face that Portis was a better back than Davis? Seriously?

Ryan didn't have a shutdown corner in 2008 with the Ravens, yet he was still able to get pressure. A great pass rush makes your pass coverage look better. As I said before, you cannot count on coverage sacks in the NFL if you want to win in the playoffs. Tthe QBs are just too good.
Which #2 WR are we going to have to double cover? Revis takes care of the #1 and all we need is a CB who can play adequately opposite Revis and stay healthy all season, and this team is closer to a championship than with Nnamdi Asomugha opposite Revis and the opponent's QB given all day to throw.
You really do not see the connection there? Jenkins is a great player but he cannot stay healthy which costs us on the DLine.
And the Steelers comment? Seriously? Do you have to have a shutdown corner to win? No. Does it help? I don't know Cato, you tell me? Does it help to have TWO shut down corners in a league where there probably aren't more than four or five 'almost' shutdown corners?[/QUOTE]
You are still confusing luxury with necessity.
This means so much coming from someone who decided to name themselves after a couple of alcoholic faggots.

Tell me what Davis would have done in Washington and I'll answer that question. You can't say that the Broncos system elevated Portis hugely and not Davis. You also can't say that playing with Jake Plummer helped Portis more than playing with Elway helped Davis.

I think probably Porter and Davis were similar level talents in the Broncos system but that Davis was surrounded by much better talent on the offensive side than Porter.

So you are comparing the Ravens D with the Jets D? Just imagine if he DID have a shutdown corner there. A pass rusher would be great and we could use an upgrade, but LB spot isn't an immediate necessity. We could use an upgrade over Revis aswell, but such thing does not exist. See below HOW Rex brings in the pressure.

All day to throw? Seriously, do you not get how Revis is used in Rex's defensive scheme? He frees up one extra defender for the pass rush, usually a safety. We seem to have had a great pass rush through out most of the season with the same roster, what makes you think we wont have that pass rush with TWO shutdown corners? We can have BOTH safeties cheat up in certain situations. We play Welker twice a year. We'll play Evans and possibly TO twice a year. Donald Driver, Percy Harvin, and Santonio Holmes to name a few #2 WRs we'll be facing in 2010.

Losing Jenkins did affect us. But was it significant? Pouha did a great job filling in for Jenkins. Im not saying we don't need DL. We do and I hope we draft a DL early in the draft. But CB is an immediate need. We don't have a starter for the #2 spot. Injuries are part of the game, and God forbid, if Revis goes down, can you imagine Randy Moss against Lowery? Andre Johnson Against Lowery? We will be doomed. If we draft a CB in the first round, would he fill up that #2 spot from day one? Revis is the best in the NFL and even he was picked on in his rookie season. Chances are, we won't find a Revis type CB at #29.

See my comment above. You have to have two good CBs in this passing league. Do we need two Shutdown corners? No. Can we use them? Yes. Does it help Rex's defensive scheme? Yes. How? He brings in more defenders to block on his blitzes, leaving WRs one on one very often. Can Lowery or a rookie cover the players I mentioned above, one on one? No. Can Aso? Yes

As for Aso's compensation, maybe you're right. Maybe a 1st and a 2nd is too much. But a 1st this yr and a conditional 2nd (to 5th depending on performance) in 2011 isn't too much. We can afford Aso. We have touched the ceiling of salary cap for years now so I don't think we'll be stingy now that there isn't a cap for maybe a few years now. You can call out Woody all you want but he is an owner that wants to bring in a championship.

Davis in season 3 hit 1750 yards and missed one game.
Davis in season 4 hit 2008 yards and played the full season.

I guess you can compare these to Clinton's best season which was 1591 yards over 13 games in 2003 with Denver.

I'm not sure how you compare Portis though, Davis in 1998 carried Denver to the super bowl rushing for over 2000 yards. Portis certainly looked like he had the potential early on to do that, but he hasn't come close to being a 2000 yard back since going to the Redskins.

Yup. It's kinda like Curtis Martin. He never had the really flashy seasons but he just consistently broke 1000 yards every year. Portis has been around He still pulls off 1300-1400 yards every season he's been healthy.

I think Washington got the better of the trade, they just couldn't turn it into anything because their front office has botched so many other moves.

What he said means that the Jets run a pressure defense and not a coverage scheme. Ryan likes to show confusing looks and complex blitz packages, it's the polar opposite of a system like Monty Kiffin's Bucs in the early 2000s when they would sit back in coverage. A system like that requires LBs and DBs that can cover well. Ryan's system is one where they blitz and rely on getting to the QB fast; it places a premium on pass-rushing and not covering. If you think the Jets this year ran a coverage based system (they blitzed on 57% of defensive snaps) you're smoking something that I would LOVE a hit off.

Revis gives Ryan a luxury because he knows he can place Revis on a team's #1 WR and if the pressure doesn't get home he doesn't have to worry about the opposing offense hitting a big play. This is just common sense, if you only drop 5 into coverage and you don't get pressure on Brady you probably need to worry about Moss getting open and gashing you for big yardage.

Going back to the 57% number, the Jets blitzed this often because they didn't get pressure sending only 4. This, obviously, is a problem. It's far easier to fix the "we don't have any legitimate pass-rushers outside of Pace" problem than it is to fix the "onoz! we only have one all-universe defensive back." You could pick up a DE in the late 2nd round that can fix your blitzing problems. Aso would cost at least a 1st rounder a MUCH more money.

I'll say it again, 2 shutdown corners is a luxury! Most SB champs this decade had 1 elite CB at most. Would you call anyone on the Saints a shutdown CB? How about the Steelers? I know the Giants didn't have any on their SB team. You can make the Ty Law argument, but he missed a SB (against the pass-happy Eagles) proving that his presence isn't required. McAllister was a shutdown CB for the Ravens, but he might be the only one. Having 1 shutdown CB is a LUXURY, having 2 is ridiculous.

I know it's cool to think about Aso being on the team, but you have to see the other areas of need on the team.

Why not just copy and paste your original post. It'll save you a shit-ton of time typing it over and over and over and over and over and over again.

I don't think anybody is saying we run a coverage based system, but instead stressing that having great coverage allows us to do more with the blitz.

I sorta agree with most of the rest of what you say, but I don't see why you are framing it as one or the other? If you say we can get that LB in the 2nd, why not use the 1st rounder to get Aso? We're still gonna need a CB from somewhere. Two shutdown CB's would allow us to blitz more with less worry of being burned.

Not sure if I'm understanding you 100% but do you want to draft a NT in the first round/first pick? We have a pro-bowl calibre NT in Jenkins, and a very competent back up in Pouha. Yes, they're 30, but I'm not wasting my first rounder on third-level depth, I'm sorry. I'm not a fan of Cody either.
