RE: JR4 Yes, that's right. The NFL nicely hinted to Belichick that it would be in his best interests to throw the Super Bowl. This is why the Giants won the Super Bowl in such easy fashion. It wasn't as if anybody from the Giants had to make a spectacular catch late in the game or anything. It also wasn't like the Pates had a lead in the 4th quarter.
Wow.....just, wow! There was "tremendous pressure" from the NFL for belicheat to throw the SB vs the giants? Is that really what he said? Whether he did or not is "for debate"? Is there really a school of thought ammong pats fans that they threw the SB?
We will see if Belicheat really is the genious he's made out to be when Tom Brady starts to show signs of aging. If you ask me Beli's a shitty drafter and wasn't such a genious while Brady was still in college.
Is this a real thing? Do patsie fans really think they lost the SB because they threw the game? No way I can't believe that. They really are the least inteligent of all football fans, even worse that Indy fans. At least they know NO simply whipped them.
The first poster talking about throwing the playoff game this year really doesn't sound ridiculous but talking about '05 makes absolutely no sense they were 10-6 and the Bengals were 11-5, they were taking the 4th seed and playing the Jags regardless so that whole Cassel purposely not throwing the TD pass is fucking stupid. The fact that they would assume throwing away the SB is also retarded, BB I would assume has some self respect, so what exactly would the NFL do to them that would make him throw the game, that would ruin the NFL if people found out that the SB was fixed! Adjustments HA, they were out played, they had no answer, the Giants pass rush was one of the craziest I've ever seen, sometimes you can't win no matter what you do, sometimes you just lose end of story.
It's not just the Patriots fans: http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2010/02/trilateral-commission-chair-robot-peyton-manning-threw-the-super-bowl-to-appease-alien-free-mason-elders-of-zion.html
Well, Have you noticed that since the Dolts lost the SB, NFL network has been showing Colts SB win, and the Colts NE Playoff game..?
Well I suppose a Pats fan can come here and get some shining examples of blithering idiot Jet fans. That being said those 2 are shining examples of fucking morons. The funny thing is that those 2 schmucks probably spent actual time coming up with that shear stupidity.
The first guy actually does have on point on that Miami game, had the Pats won they would have played Pitt. instead of the Jags in the first round. If they wanted that game, Brady would have probably stayed in longer than the first quarter. Flutie's dropkick pretty much confirmed that they had no intentions of beating a shitty, shitty Miami team and Pittsburgh proved that to be a pretty good decision that year. They pretty much did throw that game but the rest of what they said is incoherent.
The Dolphins finished only one game behind New England but you wrote they were a shitty, shitty team. I don't understand that. Certainly the '05 Dolphins were mediocre. They finished 9-7 and outscored their opponents 318-317. They weren't shitty. They were exceedingly mediocre. Let's look at that Week 17 1/1/06 game realistically. The Patriots had already wrapped up the division title and were locked into playing on Wild Card weekend. New England was 10-5 with a 7-4 conference record. Cincinnati was 11-4 with a 7-4 conference record. If NE won and CIN lost, NE would get the 3 seed. Otherwise, CIN would get the 3 seed. If we are going to play the conspiracy game here, it doesn't make sense to me that the Patriots would have wanted to tank the Week 17 game. Getting the 3 seed would have meant avoiding Indianapolis in the divisional round. The Colts bitchslapped the Patriots 40-21 at Foxborough that season. New England also lost to Denver that year, but they fared a bit better in that contest. They lost 28-20. If the Patriots got the 3 seed and won their Wild Card game, then they would have gone to Denver for a divisional playoff. Going to Denver to try to beat Jake Plummer and company seems an easier task than going to Indianapolis. (Of course, as it happened with Pittsburgh winning in the Wild Card round, NE wound up going to Denver, anyway!) Week 17 CIN @ KC MIA @ NE Both Cincinnati and New England pulled their starting QBs in the first half of their respective games. Carson Palmer and Tom Brady each threw 8 passes. The Bengals lost 37-3. The Patriots lost 28-26. Doug Flutie came on to drop kick an extra point with the score Dolphins 25, Patriots 19. If Flutie botched the kick, no big deal. There was only 6:10 remaining, so the Patriots were going to have to score a touchdown anyway. Of course, if Flutie messed up and the Dolphins went on to convert a FG the Patriots would have been trailing 28-19, but Belichick probably didn't think the Dolphins would score again. Well, of course Flutie made the kick and the score became 25-20. The Dolphins did go on to kick a field goal and they took a 28-20 lead. Now, at that point, if you are a conspiracy nutball, is when the Patriots didn't need to score again. Just throw a few passes to make it look like you were trying, get off the field healthy, and be happy (secretly) about your 28-20 defeat. No! The Patriots didn't want to do that. They wanted to tie the score. By golly, they almost did. Matt Cassel executed an 11 play drive culminating in a touchdown pass to Ben Watson as time expired. Sadly, the two point conversion was no good. What I find most telling about this whole ordeal is that the Bengals gave a turd performance in their game. They hated the Steelers that year. The two teams had split the season series with each winning in the other's stadium. The Bengals relished a Wild Card matchup with Pittsburgh. Playing their starters for the whole game in Week 17 and picking up a win over KC would have locked up a Steelers at Bengals playoff game. (Of course, it happened anyway, Palmer got injured, and the rest is history.)
The 2nd post is just ridiculous. The first post makes no sense in the context of the Ravens game. As far as the Dolphin game, it was a 2 point conversion that would have put the game into OT I believe. I don't think Belichik necessarily wanted to lose (though the playoff matchup worked out better with the loss), but I don't think he lost any sleep over it, if just for the fact that he probably din't want to wear the team down anymore playing OT.
Of course he lost no sleep over it. Historically, teams tend to not care about the difference between the 3 and 4 seeds. Difference between 3 and 2 seeds? Huge. Difference between 4 and 3 seeds? Not so much. My point earlier was that if Belichick didn't want to win that Week 17 game, then the Patriots would not have gone on a 62-yard drive at the end of the game to put them in position to tie the score with 0:00 on the clock.
Actually that's not very accurate. At the time, Belichick wanted to give Cassel game experience in a 2 minute offense in a real game. He accomplished that goal and Cassel drove down the field and scored the touchdown. On the 2 point conversion, Cassel overthrew the receiver by A LOT in the corner of the end zone.. it was a totally uncatchable ball and thrown in a manner where it was pretty obvious that it was intentional. When the game is on the line and you NEED someone to make a play, you aren't going to throw a conservative pass way over the head of your WR where he can't make a play on it when its your only shot to tie the game. You're going to throw it where he at least has a chance to make a play on it. This has been pretty accepted by most everyone who watched that game. I was at the game by the way, if that makes any difference. It was very obvious that Belichick did not want his team going into overtime the week before the playoff race began in a game that had no meaning whatsoever. In fact, all winning that game did was put them up against a tougher opponent the following week. Its not far fetched at all to think that he told Cassel to intentionally throw that ball way out of bounds and overhead. I'm sure he would have liked to win the game with Cassel at the helm, but not if it meant going into OVERTIME the week before the playoffs start. No chance.
Don't throw the TD to Watson. End of discussion. RE: "In fact, all winning that game did was put them up against a tougher opponent the following week." At the time Pittsburgh was not considered clearly better than Jacksonville. At least I didn't think that. You mean to tell me that you Patriots fans and Bill Belichick had wet diapers over the thought of playing Pittsburgh in New England? Ha ha ha ha ha. The big, bad Patriots afraid of another team?!!!? Laughable!
I'm sure nobody in the NY area is wearing them. Front running is not regional. When you guys win another title don't get all pissy when folks point out that all of a sudden you have as many fans as the Giants!
You mean the team that eventually won the Super Bowl that year? If it doesn't matter (because you know you're either #3 or #4), then you play for the match-up. The Patriots tanked that game bigtime. Cassel's throw on the conversion missed by five yards. As for the OT... there are wingnuts in every fanbase. Should I dig up any "we're going 19-0" threads from mid-September?
