Is there some sort of link that comes with that or was it just someone saying we had to cut him? The guy that runs nyjetscap.com does a ton of research on these matters, and here's what he thinks: http://www.nyjetscap.com/2010finaleight.html
I better watch out what I say around hear apparently. Pig Fuckers I guess you could say I'm a young Jets fan (24) and I don't understand why Al Davis hates the Jets so much. I tried looking it up but I didn't really find anything substantial. Can someone explain that to me? The trade, first and second picks for Aso... no way for a guy who would be covering the 2nd receiver no matter how great he is. I think there are more important things to spend money on then acquire what would be by far the best #2 CB in the league. D line, pass rusher, pretty much what has already been said. IMO, I would just rather take a CB (Wilson ftw) with our 1st or 2nd pick and get a great #2 CB through the draft that we can have for a long time.
I was thinking the same that Sheppard should be categorized as an UFA, until someone mentioned it. I think it was NDmick, but I could be wrong. I know they guy at nyjetscap.com does a lot of research so I would tend to agree with him more than I would with anyone random.
Yeah a 1st and second for Aso is a lot, but it almost guarentees the jets a superbowl in the next 5 years (imo). It would be like the Colts trading for Andre Johnson as their #2 receiver, people would be in terror. And I think the Al Davis history has to do with him hating the jets for beating the raiders years ago or something. And then the Jets doing something with revenue sharing which woulda screwed the Raiders outta lotta money. Also read something about someone prank calling the jets coach a long time ago during half time and the coach saying it was Al Davis fault or something. Who knows that man/organization are screwy
It basically comes down to the old rivalry between the Jets and Raiders in the AFL both on the field and off - which the Jets won conclusively on the field by beating the Raiders in the 1968 AFL Championship game and going on to make history against the Colts and which they won off the field when the NFL-AFL merger happened. Sonny Werblin wanted the merger bad, and he would not let Al Davis - who did not want it - back out of the deal. Davis was the commissioner of the AFL and he never got over the fact that Werblin had more influence over the process once it got started and effectively cost Davis his leadership position in the AFL. The last straw was Werblin agreeing to the payments that the Jets would make to the Giants and the Raiders to the 49ers. Davis never felt he should have had to indemnify the 49ers on the way in to the NFL and he never forgave Werblin or the Jets for supporting that process. Ok, so now fast forward a few years from there and who are the powerhouses in the AFC political arena? Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL before the merger), Don Shula in Miami (NFL in Baltimore before the merger), Cleveland Browns (NFL before the merger.) Al Davis went from the guy who made the AFL into a competitive league to an outsider in about 5 years flat and that was largely because of Sonny Werblin as he saw things. He has hated this franchise ever since.
Insider story: I love the quote by Tim Graham of ESPN... Nnamdi Asomugha started a firestorm of controversy at the Pro Bowl by suggesting that he and Darrelle Revis were poised to be in the same defensive backfield. Later, he clarified, saying that he was joking. But where there's smoke, there can be fire, and such could be the case here. NFL Insider Adam Schefter has word that the Raiders are looking to swing a trade this offseason, and Asomugha is among those that the team is open to trading. The problem, if you haven't been following closely, is the CB's contract situation, which includes an interesting clause, summarized below. But that might not keep the Jets away if he's really available, per AFC East scribe Tim Graham. Expanding on the "Revis Island" theme, we'll call the Jets' defensive backfield with Revis and Asomugha the "Rex Ryan Archipelago." Tim Graham Bad times for opposing QBs "If Asomugha really wants to play with Revis and experience life under defensive savant Ryan -- and get out of Oakland while he's at it -- perhaps he'd be willing to restructure his deal to play for a team that's trying to, you know, win. The possibility of Asomugha still seems remote because of his contract, but the fact the Raiders are dangling him around the league makes you wonder how nauseous AFC East quarterbacks will get at the mere thought of him and Revis in green and white together." Adam Schefter Nnamdi gets quite pricey "What makes a potential trade for Oakland's Pro Bowl cornerback even more difficult is that, after his contract expires following the 2011 season, Asomugha's team is forbidden from franchising him -- or it must pay him the average of the top five quarterback salaries, which this year would be $16.4 million."
If the Jets could add Asomugha They could blitz 6 all day long. Seriously, Lowery moves to cover the slot (his specialty) and Strickland covers the 4th best WR or TE. And we could still draft a CB in the later rounds for depth. I'm salivating over that defensive backfield. Offer Rhodes, a #1 this year and a #2 next year. Then draft a DE with our #2. Address WR, OT and Safety with the later rounds. We could sign Adalius Thomas once he's cut. I'm getting too ahead of myself but wow.
With Asomougha and Revis in the secondary, the Jets will be unstoppable defensively. This is a Jets fan's wet dream. I'll trade this year's 1st rounder for him in a heart beat.
You can't have everything surely, but a superunit covers a lot of holes. Asomugha and revis= epic superunit.
He also says Gholston's cap money won't accelerate if cut in 2010, in opposition to NFL.com and NYJ.com...j/s
You can get a great handle on this backstory on that show I posted about on Saturday...Full Color Football's The New Frontier Episode (NFLN) Didn't know about the payments part though.
