I can understand the people who wouldnt want to see Jones go over just money. But I cant see why people would object to getting younger players / draft picks for him. Especially the rumored Cromartie trade. As crappy as that guy tackles hes still worth the equivalent of a 3rd, maybe even a 2nd round draft pick.
If we release Jones, does that give us the chance to sign a free agent of equal value? That's always been my plan. Let Jones walk, let him find the highest contract as quickly as possible so that we can sign a decent pass rusher or cornerback. I have a lot of respect for Jones, but there are a half dozen second stringers in this league who could've had the same success he did behind the Jets line. Chester Taylor, Julius Jones, Maurice Morris, Derrick Ward, Ricky Williams, Sammy Morris...
Come on man, no one is trading us a 2nd or 3rd rounder for TJ. We traded a 2nd rounder for him 3 years ago. Come on man. Can you at least be serious? And if TJ is released he's not signing any type of big money contract, so whats the point?
NO, UFAs and released players are two different things... we need to loose a UFA to sign a UFA, cutting someone and signing someone that has been cut (which we can do already) is a totally different thing and has no restriction on it.
Im not saying we would get 2nd or 3rd round pick. Im saying the rumored Cromartie trade (Cromartie is worth a 2nd or 3rd imo not TJ) If someone offered us a 4th or 5th round pick, I think wed be stupid not to take it. In this draft class that could land us either a mediocre WR or HB. Obv if its lose TJ for nothing then I think we should just come to a middle ground. But if someone offers us ANYTHING for him, we gotta jump on it.
The Jets cannot trade TJ without paying him the option bonus due in March. When a player is traded all option and roster bonuses accelerate and become due immediately. He's definitely slowing down a bit, or more accurately not as quick as he used to be. That said, he's a proven back and the Jets other 3 backs in the potential rotation for next year are either injury-prone, coming off a significant injury or unproven. Two of those backs are small and unlikely to fit well together in a rotation. I think given what we know right now the Jets either have to trade TJ for something that clearly helps the team before the draft or they have to suck it up and pay the bonus and plan to use him in the rotation next season. The window for the Jets is not wide-open at this point. Really it might just be 2010 and 2011 and they need to be as strong as they can be in that time frame.
Exactly... everyone is evaluating TJ only as a RB. It's like saying Ray Lewis is only an ILB... they are also leaders and set the example everyday for the young players. It said so in the article as well... they are worried if they let TJ go Greene will start to become complacent... the way it happened with Vilma and Rhodes.
And then Greene suffers a series of small debilitating injuries (like last season) and we have no mainstay back when the playoffs roll around. Much better to pay both Greene and Jones and split carries between them evenly during the season and maybe have both of them fresh and available at the end.
if we can get a draft pick for him then i think its an easy choice to do the deal. take that pick and draft someone in the mid rounds to replace him. i am not a supporter of losing tj for nothing, especially because of a relatively small bonus in an uncapped year. pretty much if we can get anything of value in return for him tj should be gone. if we are gonna let him walk because of money in an uncapped year i'll be disappointed.
I bet they try to shop him. He looks good on paper with his stats the last couple of years but whoever picks him up will be disappointed when they realize their O Line is is no where near as strong as ours.
Greene seems to have injury issues and we still dont know how washington is going to be after a broken leg. Not have another proven back in the mix is very risky. It would be best if we could keep him
I would like to see TJ back. He's been a great back the last 2 years and Shonn Greene has had his fair share of injuries. What happens if Leon totally sucks? We would be left with 1 back who's played like 14 games.
