Drafttek has new mock drafts every few days, so its nice to see the randomness of how the board falls. It got me thinking, move Tennant to Guard, and have two guys with good vision sitting next to each other in Mangold and Tennant. He would be a good replacement for Faneca, who at the end of this year is most likely done as far as being a productive LG is concerned. And he's from BC. All they do is produce Linemen that last 10 years. He's tall enough, but he needs a little more bulk.
its a bigger need than we all think it is. I know pass rusher and CB are the favorites, but the OL needs just as much attention. That OL won't be indestructible forever, and the elderly get injured and decline in skill much quicker. that QB behind them is more important than fortifying a defense that can take care of itself unless its playing Peyton Manning. One guy shouldn't make us scramble to set this team up to beat him and him alone.
If I read the thread more I would have seen that. Good call on his weaknesses. Faneca pulls around a Center like no one else in the league. This kid would have to learn how to do that, because that's the bread and butter play for the running game. Although pass blocking will become more of a concern once the playbook becomes more balanced.
IMO, Tennant is a reach in Rd 2. If the Jets can trade back and acquire more mid-round picks, I'm on board. Tennant should be a solid player with a long steady career in the NFL. I'm all for upgrading the O-Line's depth, especially a versatile player that can play C/G.
I think Tennant has the athleticism to become a very good pull guard. Me too. I think he'll be an extremely valuable developmental pick if he lasts until the 4th or 5th round though.
Don't get me wrong... I agree that keeping our OL elite is very important for this team... my point is that we have already drafted a guy at G last year (supposedly a Callahan guy since he recruited and coached him in college) and Turner who has trained (and made the team) 3 season straight under Callahan. Great coaches (imo) are great because they can coach players to their max and these 2 guys have been working with prob the greatest OL coach in he NFL for most of their career. I'm willing to give them this year to show me they can sub Faneca when we cut him next year (and we will). If they aren't up to the task we'll draft a G next year but for this one I'm ok with what we have. What I think we do need is a RT prospect to take Hunter's place...
PS at the end of the day it's not a problem though. Every team at the end of the year does an evaluation of their players... If Callahan tells Tanny that Slauson and Turner are only good to be back-ups in the NFL then we'll go after Faneca's future replacement, if he tells him they are developing well we won't. All we are doing as fans is speculating what Callahan's report will be but I'm confident whatever he says Tanny will move accordingly and do the right thing.
In my mock a few weeks back, I had the Jets picking up Shawn Lauvao in the later rounds, and I think he's a better value, given his versatility at either guard or tackle. Mr. E, any thoughts?
Lauvao is an interesting late round guard prospect. The kid's tough as nails, and he has experience at multiple positions at AZ State...but there's not way in hell he can play tackle in the NFL. He's just not tall enough.
