I rarely start threads, but have been kicking around some ideas for a draft strategy and I thought I'd throw it up here and see what some of you think. First is, I think if we can trade down to the top of the second we should. On a need basis this draft sets up well for us, but I'd still like to stay in front of the Pats, whose Def. needs are similiar. Here is my hypothetical situation. A great trade partner for us in this would be(guess who?) Cleveland. They probably will trade either Quinn or Anderson, and Holmgren will do what he does best, groom a QB. I think there is a good chance Clausen is there at 29. How about #29 for, their #6 in round 2 and our old 3rd rounder #28. It works on the trade chart and would give us much better flexibility. I'll show some examples of the options it gives us. The first is a possible pick that might be there, the second WILL be there. Second RD #6 Brandon Graham/Corey Wooten- Graham could drop again after the combine, the league still doesn't like shorter/slower OLB's. Wooten is the pure 5 tech. we have needed for years. Unfortunately, if we are going to address the DL/pass rush, we have to do it early. #29 Perrish Cox/Franks- jury is still out on these 2 but we will need a CB. Third RD #28 John Jerry OG/RT- Miss or Riley Cooper WR Florida. I caught Jerry watching the Senior Bowl practice and he looks great. Poss. replacement for Woody/Faneca and Peria Jerry's little bro. I know I'll get shit for Cooper, but I like this kid. Catched everything in sight, went against elite competion every week and turned down baseball to play football. He is 6' 3 and will run in the 4.4's. Elite athlete. Also gives Schotty the flexability to move J-Co to the slot where he would be hell. PS. One more thing, the extra pick also allows us to take a strong look at Matthews from Fresno St. (that's for you E.) We could cut bait with TJ, draft Matthews and use the FA spot to bring in a CB. Have at it.
I don't want to sound like a dick, but the reason this has gone 4 hours without a comment is probably because no one wants to read that wall of text. Space it out some.
Agreed, Unless somehow he has a below average combine and McCoy has an exceptional one. But now that i think of it they may hold there pick at number 6 in the second because McCoy could potentiayl be there.
If Clausen is there at 29 I won't post on the draft part of the forum until next year, I promise! SOme other things I don't agree (some I agree with too) but to me the premise is just wrong...
yeah, you can't read anything Mcshay says and pretend for 2 seconds the guy knows what the hell he is talking about... I am a huge Clausen fan and think he is going to be a great NFL Qb, but even his doubters realize he is at worst the #2 QB prospect this year, and there are plenty of teams in the top 29 who would like a QB, for starters, I do not care if Favre returns or not, but if Clausen is sitting there when Minny is drafting, they don't even wait until the comissioner is done saying the Vikings are on the clock to turn in their card. That doesnt count the teams like Cleveland and Buffalo and Jacksonville in the second half of the top 10 to later on who are looking for a true franchise QB, (or in the Jags case, one who will sell tickets)
I remain steadfast that Corey Wootton isn't a 34 DE. He's a 43 DE, and a 43 DE alone. He's a passrusher, not a run stuffer, doesn't have great strength, probably couldn't hold his ground without adding a lot of weight to that frame.
Clausen is starting to rise again, but I don"t believe any of the QB's are worth a top 10 pick. Seattle would probably wait to use their #14, Washington has no Oline and neither does Buffalo, Cleveland is going to pay Clausen as the first QB at #6? They are already paying 2 QB's a shitload of money. Don"t forget the money. BTW, Clausen has announced that he won't throw at the combine, not a good move for a guy that has already been called a Prima Donna. I like Clausen but here are some facts. He is not tall, he does not have a great arm, he does not have great mobility and he is prone to foot injuries. I would have rated all 3 QB's taken in the first round over him (after what I saw this year).
if clausen is drafted by minny that means he fell to 29 and we would prob trade away to st louis or Cleveland but i don't; think he'll fall out of the top 15 but then again i never thought Quinn would fall of of the top 10
I might have to replace Clausen with Colt McCoy, but the concept still works. Gil Brandt loves McCoy and thinks he is very comparable to Drew Brees.
I think he can play the 5. He is a manchild and has plenty of room to fill out. I remember when I said Calais Campbell could play the 5 and was scoffed at, he started for the Cardinals doing it this year and looked great. I am a fan of having some height and size with your 3-4 Dlinemen. The only guy we have that with is Jenkins. Wooten could cause some problems batting down balls in the Pats short passing game. Both our starters at that position have 2 quality years at best. Wooton played some 3-4 end in the Iowa game and at times gave consensus first round pick Baluga fits.
I think I heard Clausen is not going to the combine. Couldn't that cause his stock to fall especially if he has a sub-par pro day?
Clausen is going to the combine to get interviewed, height and weight tested. He will not run or throw because of his toe injury.Bradford won't throw either. McCoy said he will throw. My premise was Clausen would drop because of injury, personality, and measureables. But he is smart and working his ass off. Right now he is working with Gruden on some pro stuff and to learn some West Coast stuff. I presume this is to impress. Abunch of teams at the top of the draft that run a WC system.
I do think 1 qb will fall, but not to 29. And I think its more likely that Bradford drops because of his injury past.
He'll be under 6'3.Can't run(toe?), has an average arm.(Here is an example. I think Sanchez has a better arm and throws a way better deep ball. The big knock on Sanchez last year? His arm) Hand size will also be important for ball security. I don't mean to take a dump on him, I just see some warts. The Rams need a QB more than a DT. Why has noone had a mock where Clausen goes to the Rams? He's not Matt Ryan. How much better is he than Quinn, coming out of the same system at ND?I don't know. He is not a lock. What QB taken the last 2 years in the first round would you take him over? Who's skill set is he equal to or above? Before you say Freeman, remember Tampa's coach knew himfrom college and was praying he wouldbe there.
QB's used to not throw. Ryan,Flacco,Sanchez and Freeman all did(Not sure if Stafford did, but I think so) I know Russell didn't,(not sure if Quinn did) and frankly by what we know about his lazy ass now, that shouldn't be a shocker. (Ryan wasn't going to but at the last minute he said Fuck it, and looked awesome)
