Hey what do you know... actual news for once! Just read an article on nyjets.com (http://www.newyorkjets.com/blog/posts/1512-mike-t-both-smiths-will-also-be-tendered) that said both players will be tendered (Tanny's word). Didn't say for what though... my guess is B. Smith for a 2nd rounder and E. Smith for the round he was originally drafted in (3rd). I could also see us tendering B. Smith for it's original round (4th) and matching an offer IF he recieves one. This is Rotoworld's comment: Both are core special teamers. Eric Smith, also the Jets' third safety, was a third-round pick in 2006 and should be safe if tendered at the lowest level. No team is likely to surrender a third-rounder and contract for him. Brad Smith, the Jets' No. 3 receiver and Wildcat QB, was originally a fourth-round selection. The Jets may have to give him a second-round tender. It also anticipated that a video interview with Tanny will come out later in the week if anyone cares .
I agree with your guesses on the Tenders. If BS were to be given the original draft position tender he'd be scooped up instantaneously IMO. If someone wants to give a 2nd rounder for him, then we'd have to be happy with that. I doubt anyone even thinks about a 3rd for Eric Smith.
I would jump at a 2nd round pick for Brad Smith. He may be versatile, but we could fill an instant need with another 2 pick. BTW, I also agree on the guesses for tender in the OP.
I think Eric Smith is underrated. He plays extremely hard, always gives 110% effort, and generally yields results.
Most definitely. I wouldn't even mind if the Jets gave up Brad Smith for a 3rd rounder. Leon Washington should get his old job back as our Wildcat specialist, so that takes away even more value from Smith. With an extra pick in the second or third round, the Jets could find a receiver that can actually contribute in the actual offense, and not just on gadget plays. Brad Smith's true value is on special teams, but that kind of production can easily be filled by a released veteran.
We can only hope people snatch up some of these guys (and Clemens !) Gonna need some extra draft picks to keep up with the Pats draft class
My question is (since I'm not quite sure how tenders work): Let's say we tender him for a 4th rounder and that would cost us "A" money. A team comes along and offers him "A+1" money... we'd have until the 21st of April to match that "A+1" money and that's it right? I mean, it not like after we do that the other team comes along and offers him "A+2" right? Because if that's what happens what the Jets need to understand is if the eventual "A+1" money would be more than the money we'd give him for a second round tender and act accordingly. Either way I'm sure no team will pay B. Smith more than 1, 1.5 mill a year.
I think I'd be alright letting Brad Smith go for a 3rd rounder. That might just be the drunk-with-draft-analysis talking, but I want a third round pick this year. Smith is a great asset to this team as a back-up everything, but we can get a starter in that third round, especially in the early third round. A second round pick can't be refused.
I was thinking the same thing! B. Smith is great as a wild-cat QB, a returner and a ST guy. 2 of those 3 things are Washington's duties when he is healthy (are we sure he can throw the ball?). The third one isn't really something you pay a guy 1.5 mill for... On the other hand for a 3rd rounder in this draft you can find a guy who is definetly better than him at WR (Shipley or Roberts). IF the FO is serious about bringing Leon back (which I think they are) I could see the Jets try to shop B. Smith around... it would make sense for him (more opportunities to shine) and for us (a 3rd rounder). The down-side is that I think the kid is a good guy and I root for him so I'd be sad to see him go (I know, I'm too sentimental for NFL logics :smile.
Mambo, I believe you have ten days to match a tendered offer and the last day you can make an offer to a tendered player is 11 days before the draft (so everything will be decided before the draft). They can only make that one offer.
It's hard not to be a big Brad Smith fan after the big game he had to against the Bungles to lock up a playoff spot.
according to iggys RFA thread, there is no such thing as a 3rd round tender. I'm not very up on the subject. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=54379
I don't think a third is enough for Brad. A 2nd, OK. He is very good on ST's, and teams have to prepare for his presence on offense. That should not be underestimated. Sure, he's a role player, but as a role player, a pretty good one. He is a known commodity. Third round draft picks can be a gamble. It's hard to find a starter that late, and that's what I would want for BS, a guy who might be able to start somewhere. Of course, we could use an OG, and one can be had in the third, but I'd still rather hold out for a 2nd.
Yeah we have to tender all of our players...or atleast most of them. We don't have much room to wiggle our tails in the FA so keeping the team intact has to be a priority. I wouldn't mind KC to get a low tender either. I like both Eric and Brad Smith. They provide some good depth at their respective positions, although Brad Smith can be demoted to the 4th WR if we pick up a slot WR. Eric Smith is essential because if we lose Rhodes in a trade and grab a safety in the draft, that safety would need time to step in unless we go safety early in the draft. Either way, I expected this move and I expect KC to get a low round tender as well.
Wasn't Brad Smith a 4th rounder? If so, I don't think we can tender him at 3rd round. Hrm. Probably right, for some reason I remember hearing a lot about 3rd round tender back during the Jetskins fiasco.
