He did hit over 30 home runs and drive in over 90 runs in 2008, so this seems like a pretty good low risk move for the Mets.
I didn't think he was brutal, honestly he may end up being our opening day 1B. He's got some pop and if we're healthy he'll have some meat in front of him.
What I don't understand is if the Mets were gonna bring in Mike Jacobs, why the hell didn't we sign Adam LaRouche!
You have to love this offseason. To recap so far... Traded Billy Wagner and two first round picks for a guy in Chris Carter they seemingly have no plan for, fearing that Wagner would renew his option and...what, become a dominant setup man? The guy did everything but spell it out for them- HE WAS LOOKING TO CLOSE. The Mets pay 8 m for the second base combo of Louis Castillo and Alex Cora. That's how more than Dustin Pedroia, Brandon Phillips, Robinson Cano, and Brian Roberts make. It gets the Mets about 2 home runs, 58 rbi's, and a season's worth of crappy defense. REALLY crappy defense. Gary Matthews Junior. I don't care what portion of his salary we're paying, it's too much. Don't tell me Jerry won't try to get this guy his share of at bats, at the expense of playing time for a much more effective Angel Pagan. And Mike Jacobs at the expense of Nick Evans and Chris Carter, similar players who suck at the same things Jacobs does from their respective sides of the plate, but suck much less at those particular things. -X-
I'd really be interested in an analysis of the Mets...what they pay per position, and what WAR they get, compared to the rest of the league. And then there's another part of me that doesn't want to see that. -X-
Was also sub-.300 OBP that year. He's awful defensively, and can only hit fastballs. Nothing against him personally, and I don't mind having him as a lefty power threat off the bench for a situation where he'd get fastballs, but shoot me in the face if he winds up starting.
We serisously should have a pool...everybody wagers 100 dollars in Vcash and the person who can get the closest to how many games out of 1st the Mets finish wins it all. I'm still undecided if I think the number will be on the good side of 20.
I don't know, if all 3 are healthy and play the entire year there could be an exciting race to 500 outs between Reyes, Francouer and Jacobs.
It's been a mind boggling offseason for the Mets. Shame too because with some of the guys getting back from injury Mets should be an 80-85 win team. But I just don't see how they can expect to contend when they have NOTHING behind Santana. Even assuming Pelfrey takes a step forward, that makes him a viable 3rd-4th.
Im more nervous about our lineup then I am about our pitching. Santana is Santana. Pelfrey I think will bounce back he has all the ability to do so. John Maine has proved he can be a 3 era guy and has finally recovered from all his problems. Said earlier that this is the best he has felt in years. Oli is our biggest if and if he could put it together to be one of those guys thats hit for miss and go maybe 13-10 itd be great for this team. For number 5 remember Nieve and Niese how well they were pitching when they got injured. Our line up though Reyes coming back from injury. Beltran and all his problems (sore vagina). Wright with his power woes and messed up confidence. Jason Bay will help but hes not the kind of person to carry a lineup. Murphy should and will 100% be our 1st basemen the guy will be better this year mark my words. Francour was good for us last year but who knows what we get. This is going to be a weird year for the mets because we have so many capable inconsistent players. We could be a 95 game winner or a 65 game winner. Imagine if Reyes Wright Beltran Francour Bay Castillo and hopefully Murphy all have the seasons they are capable of having and have had in the past.
So all the Mets need is for a guy with 1 pitch and a 1.50 WHIP to develop into a #2 starter, a guy that can't stay healthy to stay healthy and a lunatic who's lost his fastball to have a great year and the Mets will have a good pitching staff.
My point exactly. Honestly I don't understand why they just don't get Wang for the 2 million guaranteed plus incentives.
I'd go for Wang right now, but he'd be back around May, so that's almost half the season that we'd still have our pitching problems. There were many cheap, doable pitching acquisitions Omar could have made, but he fucking passed on all of them. We could have gotten at least Marquis and Capps.
Your point exactly. You want a more consistent pitcher so you should spend more money on getting wang. Thats kinda dumb. Same people saying our pitchers cant stay healthy and wanted Ben Sheets.
I'm not a Mets fan, but from an outside point of view I'm telling you that staff isn't even close to a contending staff. Wang only won 19 games back to back years, he'd be the closest thing you guys have to a number 2 pitcher. You have to do SOMETHING. SOMETHING. Sheets got way too much money for the injury risk he presents, but what is two million dollars to the Mets? I don't want to say trade for Arroyo cause I'll sound too much like the fat man on the FAN, but the Mets can't seriously go into the year with a staff like that even though in my opinion they have one of the better pens in baseball. I'm the same guy that was KILLED on this board for suggesting the Mets sign Abreu last year. How'd that work out? Instead of giving Bobby Abreu what essentially wound up being a 3 year 26 million dollar pact with the angels (1 year at 7 after the incentives and his new 2 year 19 mil contract) the Mets are paying Jason Bay allllll that money. Now Abreu last year might be a moot point as with all the injuries I don't think it would've mattered. But at the very least you could've dealt him at the deadline for assets, or hung on and signed him to a much less lucrative deal then what Bay got.
Abreu is the type of player that the Mets would have signed 2 years ago, but should be trying to stay away from at all costs: the accomplished, seasoned, old vet, who may still have it in him, but can completely break down/suffer a drop in production due to age at any time. I'd much rather have Bay at 31 and a 4 yr contract than Abreu at 36 and a 3 year contract. Forget Sheets, he got too much. There were other doable options the Mets could have pursued-like Garland, Penny, Harden, Marquis, etc.....and we did jack shit. Ollie has ace potential and has been taking steps to work out this offseason, so maybe he'll come through this season. But I'd bank more on him not coming through. I loved Maine but he's been fucked up for a while and he seemingly only has 1 pitch. Pelf came through big 2 yrs ago, but he fucked up last year, and he has 1 pitch too. I really like how Neise is looking though. Solid low 90s FB, killer curve, and the change is going to come along. He can become a solid 3 for us in a few years. Overall, out staff is in shambles. I don't know how you can have a top 10 pick and draft a guy with 1 pitch in Pelfrey, and I don't know how you cannot as an organization pay overslot to get some premier talent in the later rounds when minor league organizational depth is an issue. I've loved the Mets my entire life but now everytime that I think about them I have a sour taste in my mouth because the Mets are being run by a bunch of buffoons and imbeciles.
I agree with the Bobby Abreu thing but Wang had 2 good years doesnt take away his awful year. Maiine had a good year, perez had a good year, pelfrey at the end of 08 was awesome and carried our staff for awhile when Santana couldnt buy a win. Wang won 19 but remember it was on the yankees. If he was a met he wins 14-15 in those years.
