Let's just put the players out there and let them play Madden on Jerry Jones' big screen to avoid injury. They can still wear their helmets if it makes them feel good.

First off, I think it's pretty unlikely that this actually happens. A rule like this would be taking it too far, but I don't get the aversion people have to making the game safer and extending the average length of playing careers. I understand and agree with to an extent the frustration towards the new emphasis on penalties called on defenders in passing situations, but the bitching about how the NFL is being "ruined" is over the top.

If anything, I'd say watching an NFL game is more enjoyable right now than it's ever been. Certainly the last decade of super bowls have mostly been incredibly engaging and entertaining, much more so than in past decades.

You can't blame Goodell really. They've come under heavy scrutiny lately by ex-players, families of ex-players who are now deceased, and the government after denying for years that there was a connection between football and brain damage. Now they're taking everything very serious, but I doubt they begin making this into a flag football league. Fact is, we the fans don't really care enough to want to see any serious change like this.

Did anybody catch a recent Real Sports with Bryant Gumble where they did a more recent segment on concussions again? Independent Studies are finding out that, not only are players who had a number of concussions throughout their career suffering from, or have a high risk of developing severe brain damage, Alzheimer's, Dementia, etc. but even those who suffered from a couple to none, have been found to have some form of brain damage. You don't need to be laid out and unconscious anymore to suffer from the effects. Apparently, several small impacts on the field, like on the OL or DL in time, can be enough to fuck u up later on in life. I think this is why Goodell is looking into everything now. For years, the NFL has turned a blind eye to this, and now they're trying to do the right thing.

Maybe...Just Maybe....Protective gear has become too protective.

Protecting from the immediate effects of violent collisions, allowing a more serious long term injury to occur.

    Let's go back to leatherheads.

Thats called Rugby these days

Goodell to me just seems to sit in NFL towers all day long thinking of the next big thing that will light him up as being the 'best ever' commissioner.
He is THE worst ever commissioner, so far, by a long way...former Jets intern...ugh hes related to us :pukes:.

Better still, outlaw all pads!!! Lets see who sticks their head in then. Today's players are nothing more than armored missiles. It's all the padding that enables players to run full speed, head first into brick walls and not get hurt. Lets make it so they can't do that anymore. What are the stats on concussions with Rugby or Australian rules football players? That's the only way to find out for sure.

for me, the game should be more about tackling than hitting, so I'm not opposed to the game becoming less violent. if it opens the game up more and more points are scored, I think it would only make the game more exciting and popular.

Too many points are scored, we need more scores like baseball games than scores like basketball. They gotta stop giving the offensive every single advantage.

If players are getting hurt, then just make better fricken equipment.

by your logic, there should be no labor laws because every job would have basic health risks and if you don't like one health risk, go to another job. that's not quite how things work.

not to mention the basic fact that the NFL has a pretty invested interest in making sure its players are healthy to play, a pretty important element to sports, wouldn't you say?

Offenses are already scoring a record number of points and the game isn't any better or more exciting than it was a decade ago. Watching two defenses get walked all over gets old fast. And all the pressure on the refs to drop more flags means more mistakes - bogus calls and non-calls.. and we're seeing more than enough of that already.

I think you might be right about tackling vs. hitting though. Maybe it's just my imagination but there don't seem to be as many players with great tackling technique as there used to be. Even on our top ranked defense, players like Rhodes and Scott have no idea how to wrap up a ball-carrier.

i really dont think many guys are ever taught how to tackle properly. going all the way down to the high school level tackling drills are avoided like the plague due to concerns for injuries. now think about the superstar.... he isnt hitting someone 20 times in a controlled environment in practice to learn how to actually do it.

nope just let em fly around and throw shoulders at everyone who has the ball.

    Agreed.

I've been watching the sport for a quarter century. It is no more exciting now than it was in the 1980s.

Arthur Blank is quoted saying “NFL ownership recognizes his already significant list of accomplishments and is fully behind his strategic vision for the future of our league”.

The extension was expected but it's depressing seeing all the love NFL owners show for the guy. Goodell is a spineless turd who only cares about is making the league bigger and richer. I wouldn't have any problem with that but the first rule of exploitation is discretion and he has none of it. He's running the game into ground at a mile a minute - it's only been 3 1/2 years and people already loathe the man. You can read his sleaze and douchebaggery like a fucking book.

spread the word! most people dont realize things like this until it is way too late. it doesnt matter if he changes or leaves just so long as he doesnt ruin the league before he is done.

Sadly, that's why the owners love him. He makes them happy... in the pants.
