He's more Lee Evans as a prospect...I've never understood these Steve Smith comparisons. Tate is built like a RB...
I don't get the Lee Evans' comparison. Evans' entire game is based around his speed, and Tate is a little more of an all-around receiver. They are similar in size now, but Tate can get to around 205-210 without losing speed. I think he'll be a valuable weapon for whoever drafts him. He's a better receiver prospect than you're giving him credit for, but I agree that he doesn't fit into what the Jets are trying to do on offense. He'd be getting paid way too much to do very little in our offense.
You underrate Evans. Evans is a true WR...a criminally underrated one at that. I think Tate would work very well in this offense, it's just that I don't believe in using a first on a guy who'll be our #3 WR for at least 3-4 years unless we don't resign Edwards.
Haha, Yes Woodhead and Clowney are absolutely not the answer Braylon will be fine as the "#1" for now, I don't know if anyone agrees with me on this but Cotchery is still our true #1 option, he should always be our go to guy, he has great hands and is a good route runner, Cotch, Braylon, Keller, Leon those are 4 good receivers, we are missing that speed guy though, we can worry about a #1 later on if Braylon doesn't pan out in 2010 There HAS to be someone available in rounds 3-6 that would be an ideal slot receiver for this team, he doesn't even have to be the fastest guy out there, someone with very reliable hands/great route running/above average speed Speed Kills in the NFL but we don't have to act like Al Davis and pick someone due to just their speed (Golden Tate) At the end of the day I kind of wish we didn't acquire Braylon and went after Damian Williams this year, he reminds me so much of Reggie Wayne, but if Braylon proves me wrong with a 1000 Yard Season with 9 TDs and a low amount of drive killing drops then i'll def shutup I mentioned earlier in this board McCluster from Ole Miss and a lot of people hated my idea, but if he can bulk up a little bit to take hits, we can use him as a slot receiver/Change of pace back, that man will run anywhere on the field, even in the middle of the field where hits are most brutal Regardless i'm taking that corner from Boise State or a pass rushing linebacker in the first (really hoping for a corner in the first) CB LB WR DL/OL
I want an Austin Collie / Mike Wallace kind of guy... I want to take a look at Andre Roberts during the combine...
No, I don't. He's a speedster, and there's nothing wrong with that. Buffalo should try to get him the ball more on screens - he's a dangerous player. I just don't think he compares to Golden Tate.
Roberts has ridiculous body control and hands. He's not the fastest guy out there, even against FCS talent, and that could hurt him in the NFL. I'm excited to see him at the combine as well.
1. Tate is a speedster himself. 2. Evans is way tougher than I think you're trying to lead us on to believe.
I agree completely with this thread and it's good to see that there seems to be a consensus that this team just needs to bulk up on defense in the draft. Rex gets his guys.
I never said Tate wasn't fast, I just think as a former running back, he's a bit more physical than most guys his size. I'm not trying to lead anyone to believe anything...I just see that Lee Evans' real value: he's a smallish, quick receiver that's dangerous after the catch. He's not going to win many jump balls, like Tate does. It's okay for someone to not agree with your comparison DWare - I just don't see any of Lee Evans in Golden Tate.
I agree WR isn't a real need, but I disagree about secondary depth, what we need is to increase our passrush, get all the covermen you want it won't do squat if your blitzing all the time and still not generating consistant pressure. Generate pressure and the secondary improves dramitically, without the pressure a secondary of all Revis's can't keep everyone covered.
Since the Jets don't feel they are going to keep Strickland or Sheppard as of right now, and Coleman being an extreme liability in everything he does, CB is a need. A big pass rushing force is an equal need to CB.
That might not be the case if Ryan lets Schottenheimer open up the offense next season. I know Ryan wanted to go with a run-heavy offense but if Sanchez can show a good amount of improvement during the offseason, I can see the Jets becoming much more aggressive in the passing game. Someone like Tate could allow Schottenheimer to do that with 3 wr sets. If he can be as physical as a former RB would lead me to believe, He could be an improvement over B. Smith in the slot. A WR who could block and be an actual threat to catch the ball would give Schottenheimer and Sanchez a lot more to work with. That being said, K-DUB!!!!
Tate's not that physical...he's just more physical than Lee Evans. I don't see him going all out on blocking plays like Braylon Edwards does. He's quick as hell, and nasty after the catch. Ryan might let Schottenheimer open up the offense a little, but we won't go with 3 wide sets enough for Tate to have an immediate impact. I think we'll see an eligible lineman (Wayne Hunter) on the field a little less, but not that much. I'd also love to see the Jets get Kyle Wilson.
I will. If we pick up a guy like Golden Tate, we can part ways with both Danny Woodhead and David Clowney and open up a roster spot to carry another defensive player on Game day. Both Woodhead and Clowney provide very little in the terms of Special teams, where as Tate is a very good punt returner. Unless the staff is in love with a CB or pass rushing prospect that may fall to us (Jerry Hughes I'm looking at you) you can take a wideout. I'm still not sold on Edwards as a long term number one and Cotch is a very good #2 guy, but thats about it. I'm fine with going WR this late in the draft.
Once again...you underrate the crap out of Lee Evans. Don't feel too bad....Evans is criminally underrated by everyone...yes, he's a top deep threat when he's got even a decent QB, but he's also a good all around WR who's game is more physical than you're trying to portray. To be as good a deep threat as Evans is you have to be able to be good at jump balls... Tate's got the exact same build and skillset as Evans, and I expect him to have the same type of game as a pro. I think he'd be better as an outside WR than a slot guy...and I don't like the idea of Cotchery in the slot.
People usually back their opinion with more than just more opinion...for instance: First play he "goes up and gets it" like he can't...then there's some of him going over the middle...obviously him going deep...you're right...Tate would be lucky to turn into Evans. I realize in todays world "physical" means 6'2 230...but there are actually NFL WRs who aren't that and manage just fine.
