3. You need more than 1 great CB to stop them...where was Austin Collie all night? Not only was he invisible, but the Saints DBs made Wayne disappear and sent The Waiter into the kitchen after his big TD. Clark was the only effective receiving weapon for the whole game. 2. When you blitz, your secondary needs to play aggressive as well. It's so basic, you have to play tight coverage on the blitz, but the Jets too often give the receivers a cushion and allow Manning to complete short passes when he's under pressure. This is the main reason why I think Rhodes has to go...you need players that study the defense and know when to take a chance and make a player, as Porter did last night for New Orleans. Rhodes plays it says in deep centerfield and only jumps a route after the pass is thrown...too late to ever make a meaningful play. 1. You beat Manning by outscoring him. At every juncture where Sean Payton had the opportunity to take a chance to score more points or play it safe and get less points or play defense, he chose offense. --At the end of the half, he passed on going for 3 to try and get the 7 on 4th down. --After failing on 4th down, he used his timeouts perfectly, and despite having less than 1 minute to work with, chose to get all he could and was able to get the FG anyway. --The onside kick call to open the 2nd half was the right move, not just because it worked, but because Payton understood that 80 yards or 40 yards, it's no different to Manning. (Which is also why Belichick to the chance that he did during the regular season.) Recovering the onsides kick paid dividends beyond the TD they scored...it kept momentum on the Saints side...it kept Manning and Freeney chilled...and it frustrated Manning and forced him into more and more dangerous throws that ultimately resulted in the clinching pick-6. The reason the Saints beat the Colts and the Jets didn't is that Rex believed he could control and limit Manning, and Sean Payton understood you can't stop Manning...you just have to take EVERY opportunity you have to score as many points as you can.
Yes, but it was also an excellent defensive effort. Though he threw for over 300 yards, their running game seemed to be pretty non-existant, and they never really got into a rhythm at all. But the Saints offense did a great job managing the game. I loved the aggressiveness. Schottenheimer was way to conservative.
I thought the tidbit aboout Gregg Williams having a first half D, a third quarter D and a fourth quarter D was pretty important, too. I'm sure we mixed it up, but the Colts coottoned onto oour overload scheme early and we never coountered that.
It wasn't about being conservative we couldn't make plays really in that second half, we moved the chains but couldn't muster up enough yards each time we were short of the first down line, that penalty in the 3rd also hurt a lot that took us to 2nd and 15 This team needs a slot receiver bad to pick up like 5 yards or so, and for Leon to be healthy
We needed Schotty to wear clowneys uniform do a tripple reverse shovel pass to richardson who laterals to j co for the score.
You obviously don't get how to view Schottenheimer. HE cost us the game against the Colts. The Saints have a bunch of better DBs than we do....we have Revis and Rhodes (who they, along with 30 other teams, would love to take off of our overloaded shoulders)....they have Greer, Sharper, Jenkins, Porter, Harper, Gay, and the super athletic Young...I remember a couple years ago when that secondary was absolutely empty...now there's 7 guys who I'd like to steal (well, don't really want Harper or Gay)...to put it in perspective our DB depth chart is like this...Revis, Rhodes, Leonhard, Sheppard, Lowery Strickland, Smith, Ihedigbo, Coleman....I like 4 out of the first 5 and 5 out of the first 6...but there's not a ton of speed in this group.
1) Wayne was dinged.... I bet Rex would have moved Revis around even more 2) The Saints didn't lose 2 CB's, a LB and their running game 3) I think Rex showed New Orleans what can be done (when Healthy) and gave them confidence. I felt a deja vue moment for a sec last night - The Saint's in the 1st half had a DB go down and Peyton cashed in immediately, then I think Gay came up hobbling.... I was like UH OH!!!!! If they lost Vilma (Bart Scott) #2 DB for the game, had another hobbling and lost their Running game, then I think it's the same result as the Jets game... And every jackass is talking about how "Manning Figured things out"..... Also, DAMN, the Jets were close to picking off Peyton on that long pass up the seem - For the Saints he was just a little more off and they got "The Gift".... This ALL could have been US.
This is all nutty.... The Jets lost key components and couldn't do what they did in the 1st qtr.... The Colts did little more than Luck Out. IMO
Don't patronize me because I think Schottenheimer could have called a better game. I felt when we were up 17-6 we should have opened things up more, but the playcalling grew really stale as we kept rushing it. That drive after the fumble was really weak. We were lucky to get 3. We suffered from a lack of execution as well, but I didn't like the way Schottenheimer called it after the big lead.
Yeah, that was great early on, but like my previous post says, he ran the ball far to much after that. If Greene were playing, maybe it would have worked, but he got hurt and T Jones was ineffective. He should have adjusted. It's funny to me that any criticism of Schottenheimer on this board is now mocked because he has become the media's darling.
Being to conservative doesn't mean we didn't have enough trick plays, or by the same token, having a couple of trick plays doesn't mean someone isn't being to conservative. The fact is we didn't really air it out very much after going up 17-6, or even after recovering that fumble. You're up 14-6, you just recovered a big fumble, and this is the drive you come up with? New York Jets at 03:40 1-10-IND 29 (3:40) (Run formation) 20-T.Jones right tackle to IND 26 for 3 yards (58-G.Brackett). 2-7-IND 26 (3:00) (Run formation) PENALTY on NYJ-67-D.Woody, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at IND 26 - No Play. 2-12-IND 31 (2:30) (Run formation) 20-T.Jones right tackle to IND 35 for -4 yards (93-D.Freeney, 98-R.Mathis). Timeout #1 by IND at 02:23. 3-16-IND 35 (2:23) (Run formation) 20-T.Jones up the middle to IND 30 for 5 yards (58-G.Brackett, 93-D.Freeney). Timeout #2 by IND at 02:16. 4-11-IND 30 (2:16) 3-J.Feely 48 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-85-J.Dearth, Holder-11-K.Clemens.
If the Jets were healthy, they win the Super Bowl this year. I have no doubts about it. The Jets would have manhandled the Saints.
GROUND AND POUND... For the Jets to win, the Jets had to play their game - Unfortunately Greene getting hurt put a dent in those plans. With the running game non-existent, it made the Jets One dimensional and really cut down on what was open to them and what they can call... Yeah, easy now to say that the Jest should have thrown out their own guide book and morphed into some team they are not on the fly throwing bombs all over the place but, that's not what got them there.
Gotta like Schottenheimer; he did a great job this season, esp. during the 2 games vs. the Bengals and the win in SD. Losing Leon and having a rookie QB didn't make his job any easier. But I agree: Schottenheimer's play calling during the AFC championship series--- right after Leonhard recovered the fumble on the Colts' 34-yard line--- was suspect. As was the decision to try a 52-yard FG. Why would you give Manning such great field postion?! Overall, Feely did well this year, but during his career, his missed FGs have come in bunches. Anyone else notice the similarities between the Jets' loss to the Colts and the Colts loss to Who Dat?
Ground and pound is an overall philosophy because they have a great offensive line and a strong running game. It is not something they have to do every game. Even though Rex wants the running game to drive the offense, the O.C. can adjust and do things differently if the running game isn't generating offense. In this game, Thomas Jones was struggling and Mark Sanchez was hot. You're saying they shouldn't have let Sanchez air it out more because they've been running all year? Well Sanchez hadn't been good all year and the running game usually was working. Lets stick with something that is failing because it's what got us here. No, that's not smart.
He did let Sanchez throw it in the second half, so he didn't have a bad game, but that drive after the fumble was just bad.
