Guys, instead of doing another mock, I've decided to create a thread that I will update week-by-week until draft time. In this thread, I'm going to list and evaluate certain, lesser known prospects that may be on the Jets' radar come draft time. Each week, I will add two prospects (1 offensive and 1 defensive) to this thread. February 5th, 2010: Emmanuel Sanders, Wide Receiver, Southern Methodist University Height: 5'11 Weight: 182 2009 Statistics: 98 receptions for 1,339 yards and 8 total TDs (1 KR TD) Prospect Comparison: Davone Bess Projected Round: 6th to 7th Projected 40 time: 4.45 Positives: - Extremely productive at the college level - Fearless over the middle - Solid return specialist - Durability - Experienced (4 year starter) Negatives: - Very raw as a route runner - Played in a gimmicky offense under offensive guru June Jones - Skinny - Lacks elite height - Numbers are inflated Jets?: With limited picks in this draft, the Jets may be able to draft a guy like this in the 6th round. Sanders has all of the tools you look for in a slot receiver, he'll just need a little time to develop as a route runner. Chris Cook, Defensive Back, University of Virginia Height: 6'2 Weight: 212 2009 Statistics: 34 solo tackles, 6 PDs, 4 INTs, and 1 TD Projected Round: 4th to 6th Projected 40 time: 4.58 Prospect Comparison: Sean Smith Positives: - Size - Versatility - Received NFL level coaching from former Jets' head coach Al Groh - Run support - Physicality Negatives: - Character concerns - Injuries - Academic issues - Lack of timed speed - Tweener...safety or corner? Jets?: Over the past couple weeks, it's become clear to a lot of us that most of our defensive backs won't return in 2010. Rex Ryan loves versatility and Chris Cook is as versatile as they come.
Good stuff as always Mr. E. After looking a few things up I don't think I'd come complain about these 2 guys being our 6th and 7th round picks.
Great idea for a thread. Update it even more often if you have enough prospects in mind. You should also add when you project the player to go at this point. And I'm not one for 40-times, but it might also add a little more.
Thanks TCGF. Emmanuel Sanders definitely has a chance to improve his stock at the combine. He's got some serious wheels. Since certain areas of his game are so undeveloped, he should still be a late rounder. Chris Cook more than likely won't run well, and that will cause him to take a fall. He's one of my favorite sleepers in this draft.
That's actually a good idea - I stayed away from 40 times because everything's projected right now before the combine. I'll add projected 40 times and projected selection shortly though.
Major props...E!! Good idea...I like this thread. I like Chris Cook, I know he's played some CB and S at Virginia, so his versatility would be perfect in Rex's defense.
Thanks man. I figured most of the guys that read the draft forum should already know the players that will go in the first two rounds. This should expand everyone's views on draft day. In my opinion, Chris Cook is a second round talent that lost major ground in this draft with nagging injuries and an academic suspension.
You're also going to make it a lot tougher to get late round steals in the 7th round draft so thanks for that...jerk.
I heard Bill Parcells fired all of his scouts and claims TGG's Draft Forum is the football Bible. Someone find out his IP address and ban him now.
I like this. I was going to do something like this...a scouting report on a random player whenever the mood hit me...the mood hasn't hit me yet. Cook is a big time former sleeper. Now lots of people are noticing him. He might end up a better NFL corner than Dowling, but he also might not. Sanders is UDFA fodder most likely...
Emmanuel Sanders received a combine invite, so he'll get a chance to show his skills at the end of the month. I just can't see how a player so productive at the college level can go unnoticed anymore, especially with the success that Wes Welker and Davone Bess have had. Bess and Welker have opened doors for run 'n shoot receivers like Sanders. The fact that he can return kicks and punts gives him added value. Chris Cook is still a sleeper. He got some well-deserved recognition at the Senior Bowl, but he still has a lot question marks about his game...mainly that he plays too high. Tall corners always fall in the draft, so we'll see. At this point, the highest I can see him going is in the 4th round.
Chris Cook has the ability to start in the NFL, but we shouldn't right away. I think he'll be a package player as a rookie, but he's definitely a player that can develop into a starter. I think he'll be a safety at the next level.
February 7th, 2010: Dorin Dickerson, H-Back, Pittsburgh Height: 6'1 Weight: 222 2009 Statistics: 49 receptions for 529 yards and 10 TDs Projected 40 time: 4.65 Projected Round: 5th or 6th Prospect Comparison: Leonard Weaver Positives: - Versatility - Incredibly strong - Receiving Ability - Powerful runner - Work Ethic Negatives: - Tweener...fullback or tight end? - Lacks ideal bulk - Not much of a ball carrier - Lacks ideal height - May have to develop as a lead blocker Jets?: After doing a little research on our practice squad fullback Jason Davis, he seems like he could eventually be a decent fullback for us. However, Dorin Dickerson's versatility, especially around the goalline, would be too good to pass up if he was there in the later rounds. Adrian Tracy, 3-4 Outside Linebacker, William and Mary Height: 6'3 Weight: 245 2009 Statistics: 50 solo tackles, 22 TFLs, and 12 sacks Projected 40 time: 4.72 Projected Round: 5th or 6th Prospect Comparison: Lawrence Sidbury Jr. Positives: - Versatility - Production - Pass rushing moves - High motor - Experienced (4 year starter) Negatives: - Tweener...linebacker or defensive end? - Level of competition - Lack of coverage skills - Needs to bulk up - Leverage Jets?: It's fairly obvious that the Jets need a pass rusher. Throughout his career, Tracy has been one of the most feared pass rushers in the FCS. With limited picks, Tracy could be a late round, developmental prospect for the Jets to look at.
