Goodell: NFL would consider ban on 3-point stance

MIAMI (AP)—A ban on the three-point stance? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says it’s possible.

Concerned about concussions, Goodell said the league will keep looking for ways to make the game safer. Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation” hours before the Super Bowl, he didn’t rule out the idea of banning the three-point stance for linemen to reduce the ferocity of collisions at the line of scrimmage.

“As you’ll see tonight, you’ll see a lot of players that never get down in a three-point stance,” Goodell said Sunday. “So it’s possible that would happen.”

While science is still trying to determine the long-term effects of concussions, Goodell said, the league has made progress in increasing awareness about the severity of such injuries.

“For many years the culture had been quite different—that concussions weren’t serious injuries,” he said. “I think we have changed that culture and made sure that people understand they are serious, and they can have serious consequences if they’re not treated properly.”

Goodell has met with NFL competition committee co-chair Rich McKay to begin evaluating possible rules changes.

Another priority for Goodell is the league’s stalled labor negotiations. He predicted players’ salaries will still grow under a new agreement, even if their share of revenue is reduced as owners have proposed.

Goodell said the owners need more money to cover rising costs for international ventures and infrastructure projects such as new stadiums.

“You have to invest in these stadiums that we’re in today,” the commissioner said. “You need to find new ways of creating revenue, whether it’s international or otherwise. And that takes investment. And we need to make sure that the owners have the capital to be able to do that. And then the pie grows, and everyone benefits.”

The union has said management wants players to reduce their share to 41 percent of applied revenues from about 59 percent. Goodell counters that of the $3.6 billion in incremental revenues since 2006, players received $2.6 billion.

“We want to structure something that really is going to lead us into the next decade in a way that’s constructive, so the players benefit, the teams benefit, and most of all, the game,” Goodell said.

The league’s current labor contract expires in March 2011. NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith said Thursday the chance of a lockout next year is “14” on a scale of 1 to 10.

“I don’t agree with that,” Goodell said. “The owners don’t win by having a lockout. Shutting down your business is not good for anybody. And it’s certainly not good for the players. It’s certainly not good for the fans.”

I'm sure if they made players play the game in a big foam pit it would reduce injuries as well. Roger Goodell is a giant pussy.

So how long is it before the flag belts and red pinnies become game day attire?

Yea, god forbid these football players have lives and healthy bodies after they finish entertaining Americans. I mean, WTF do these guys think? Life goes on after your playing days? Most of these guys are like 35 when they retire, who does anything after 35?

These men get paid millions to sacrifice their bodies for our entertainment dammit! They should be more than willing to do that for that kind of money! It takes a real piece of shit pussy like Goodell to care about his employees after their playing days. With rules like that you get guys like Tiki Barber or current players like Kerry Rhodes...too scared to ruin their "future" for their present, their team, and their fanbases!!

These guys are just dumb athletes Goodell. Learn your lesson. Fucker. I don't CARE that so many past football players had trouble walking as they got older...or that concussions lead to brain damage or a whole bunch of other unnecessary side effects...or that most players are dead broke after a few years out of the league...thats their problems....not the league's, or us suffering fans', problems!

Goodell: NFL would consider ban on 3-point stance

    Edit: Sorry, merge please.

Mr. Goodell, how about you take a few months off from ruining football and focus on avoiding a lockout?

Next good ol Roger will propose they play 2 hand touch. Develop better equipment to help protect the players otherwise you take the fun out of the game we love by implementing too many rules.

Anyone else think this is part of the Peyton Manning effect?

He loses a game, a rule change is proposed...

i hate goodell to the point that i hated herm edwards. i really truely cannot stand the guy.

i have said it before and i will say it again here, this moron will ruin the nfl with his authority complex. he wants to do things not because he will help people but because he wants to show everyone how important he is.

i dont even care about the 3 point stance thing at this point. the labor situation bothers me more. he says they need to reinvest to make things better, really roger how much money do the owners and league need?

it will come to a point that people just stop caring and spending money on the nfl. i have already stopped spending money on it, i still support it by watching games on sundays but refuse to watch on nfl network.

If you're really concerned about getting a concussion, you should find a job other than being an NFL lineman. Simple as that. These guys not only get paid millions of dollars to play a game for a living, most of them also get a free education to fall back on if the NFL thing doesn't work out. To me, that justifies the risk of playing.

If you want to pussify the game, fine. But then people will stop watching, the job will become less valuable, and the players won't make the kind of money that they do now. Personally, I think we're all better off without rule changes. Make players wear safer helmets, don't make it illegal to rush the passer (which would essentially be the end result of banning the 3 point stance.)

Then maybe people should just stop overvaluing sports. These are still men...men who's careers in football are usually done before they hit 30...and certainly before they hit 40.

Also, those millions of dollars on players are investments...and you treat your investments accordingly.

I wonder how much of this shit spewing from Goodell's mouth is nothing more than lip service. Meaning, he'll make statements about these possibilities - without any intention of ever implementing them - because it shows that he's 'trying' to improve the players' safety, especially regarding concussions.

The less your investments do, the less they are worth.

The investments you speak of, are merely infrastructure to the game itself.
Much like stocks in a portfolio.

The Game itself, that's the actual investment.Pussifying the game will eventually lead to a devaluation of the investment....

It can take a league years to recover from a devaluation.
