i think this is supposed to go up if Brees wins on Sunday... dunno which idiot decided to jump the gun....

also is there any doubt that Dilfer is the worst starting qb to win a super bowl?

No, if going by regular season.

But as for Super Bowl appearances only, Dilfer wasn't bad. He was 12 of 25 for 153 with a TD. His passer rating, for what that is worth, was 80.9.

Unitas was not good in his Super Bowl start and victory. He didn't even finish the game. His stats were 3 of 9 for 88 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs. The TD went for 75 yards and was sort of a freak play in which the ball ricocheted to John Mackey after Eddie Hinton and Mel Renfro both had their hands on it.

From a passer rating standpoint, Brad Johnson, in his SB win, had a slightly worse game than did Dilfer.

John Elway and Ben Roethlisberger were poor and awful, respectively, in their first Super Bowl victories. Joe Theismann was only average in his SB win.

But, again as for regular season, you are right with the Dilfer comment.

Dilfer wasn't very good, but Doug Williams and Jeff Hostetler also had pretty undistinguished careers, and neither was his team's starting QB during most of the regular season in which he won the Super Bowl.

Holy shit, did you just say Dilfer is a better QB than Unitas?

    nope

simply stated Dilfer was actually better in his SB start than Unitas was in his SB start

that doesn't mean Dilfer was a better QB than Unitas

It's kind of like how Timmy Smith had arguably the greatest Super Bowl performance by a running back, but at the same time had the most undistinguised career of any Super Bowl startin' running back.

OK, but I think the question that ESPN is posing is to rank the one ring QBs.

    My list is:
    # 1.Joe Namath - Gotta give me this one
    # 2.Johnny Unitas
    # 3.Peyton Manning
    # 4.Kurt Warner
    # 5.Steve Young
    # 6.Ken Stabler
    # 7.Brett Favre
    # 8.Len Dawson
    # 9.Drew Brees

    big drop

    # the rest

Yeah, espn is looking for readers to base their rankings on the totality of the QBs' career.

My post about Dilfer was an aside.

If I do what espn is looking for, then I'd have Dilfer at the bottom of the list for sure.
