Totally agree. I wasn't singling you out, just the overall notion of the backup QB needing to be some kind of mentor for a young starter. I see it a lot on here, I just think the whole concept is overrated. Personally I'd love to see it--I think Chad could do the job needed, it would right a wrong done by this management team and possibly help Sanchez a bit too. The precedent has been set, Richard Todd returned as a backup two years after being traded and Vinny came off his couch to help us out too.
Haven't read the entire thread, but..... http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/10207/pennington-would-consider-jets-return Personally I think Pennington would be good for Sanchez's development.
I won't lie, I didn't have a problem with sending him on his way, but I'd be really freaking happy to see him come back behind Sanchez. As noodlish as his arm is, his head is one of the best in the game. Him tutoring Mark is a huge step up from Clemens. Could Chad handle holding for Feely? While I don't trust Chad as a starter, he'd be a helluva weapon on STs as the holder.
The Jets blundered when trading Chad so we could get Favre, who imploded late in the season like Sanchez did during the middle of this season. 3 shoulder surgeries later... would it be worth the financial risk? Anyway, I doubt Tannenbaum would bring him back.
If Sanchez got hurt, who would you rather have start, Kellen or Pennington off his 3rd shoulder surgery? It's a tough pick, but I'd probably take pennington. He played his whole career without any arm strength, so it would work out. lolol. I'm not sure who else is out there, but if Kellen leaves I'm thinking the Jets have to pick up a backup. You can't really go into the season with Ainge as a backup can you? Remember 99 with Mirer? ugg.
I don't know how you can think they blundered, unless you think we shouldn't have gone after Favre... Favre was the better choice at the time being that he came off one of his best seasons in years. I'm a huge Pennington fan, but there is no way you can say this was a blunder. The Favre part didn't work out all that great, but nobody could have foreseen that debacle coming. But in the end we come away with the chance to get Sanchez. In the end it comes out a win for us.
First, if we go veteran backup then Chad is by far my first choice. With that said, I'm stunned by the overwelming number that want us to bring someone in. This team is built around Sanchez and we have two young backups on the roster (I'm assuming Kellen is a gonner). This idea that he needs someone to help him develop is bull. We have Cavanaugh for that. If Sanchez goes down long term, we're screwed. I say work with the young guys we have (don't be surprised to see O'Connell leapfrog Ainge), for God's sake please stop carrying four QBs, and spend our resources and roster spot on a greater need.
If he can prove that he can still throw (he's due to start throwing in March), teams that bring him in for a workout are going to have a bigger need at qb. Rams immediately come to mind.
This is how I feel. The year for him to have a "mentor" just passed....... He already played better in the post season than Chad had. If people were concerned that backups just plain suck, that's a different argument (although I like the idea of developing young talent)
I would rather have that religous freak Tebow then Chad. Can you imagine Sanchez going down in week one and Chad's our QB for the rest of the year. Seriously, that would so depressing, I would just give up and wait till next year. OMG, the thought of # 10 behind center makes vomit come up my throat. QB coach, sure, player NO WAY
At some point, even the hyperbole is unwelcome. It would be depressing if Sanchez went down week one regardless of who is backing him up.
...........and when your starter goes down, the season is over anyway. Its beyond rare for the backup to carry the season deep into the playoffs, unless you are Jeff Hostetler and you have LT and crew as your defense.... and Parcells in his prime. I'll bring Chad back, he can mentor the young kids who will be backing up Sanchez i.e. Ainge and O'Connell. I trust a noodle armed veteran more than two kids with zero experience.
I know Chad is coming off his 3rd surgery, but he is a PERFECT fit for a Rex Ryan led team. Mistake free game manager who is great at play action and short passes? Wow. With a healthy Pennington, the Jets were probably better than 9-7 this year. He will be able to teach Sanchez so much too. I think the Jets should go after him hard. They arent allowed though right? Finishing in the Top 4.

Tim Tebow will be an undrafted FA when the draft is said and done. Chad is a smart QB, can tutor Mark and Erik and if Sanchez had to sit, Penny was/is a STARTER in this league. I said QB Coach/Backup QB role, almost like the old school player/coaches Reggie Dunlap, anyone?
no, move on, he cant play anymore, he is one hit away from a complete body fracture........how's that gonna mentor Sanchez.......
