I wanted to let the "dust" settle after the flipping bird incident... But this week I've heard Francesa(I Know), Benigno/Roberts, Around the Horn crew, and other media members make these comments on Rex/Jets fans... Basically, most except Francesa,Gary Myers, Steve Serby, JWWS are perfectly cool with what Rex did flipping the bird, not condoning it, but finding it funny and likeable since it was to a rival fan etc....Solely because Rex is WINNING. Joe/Evan said right now they love the guy, which a lot of us do, but things are good because he's winning...If he begins to lose, then they'd have a problem with his actions; which we know are the brash talk, arrogance, confidence, shoot off at the mouth, and recently the bird flipping. Some say if the Jets stumble to a 1-3 or so start then the fans will turn on Rex and no longer enjoy his antics, or if they just miss the playoffs. That the fans would grow tired of his persona and style and want him to be ousted, probably not after Year 2, since you need time to build, even though the bar is raised. So my question...If Rex is sitting at 4-8, which I totally don't expect since I'm actually sipping the kool-aid and see the team as a threat in the AFC and an overall GOOD team, would YOU grow tired of Rex' actions and want him to "tone it down" or get sick of him? I want Rex here for years, good or bad, high or low, he's what this organization needs, I hope you all feel the same even if things were to sink a bit... Again, just posting this on what other Jets fans/media members have said about Rex.
I agree. But this week plenty have said that if the Jets were to lose next season that the fans would get tired of his actions... That's my point, would you get tired of him if things were to go downhill? It's not like it's never going to happen, maybe next year, maybe Year 3 or 4...Even Cowher,Belichick,Dungy and plenty others have missed the playoffs.
 And that's what the answer should be. Now, a lot of this sparks from Francesa...Saying right now is the honeymoon and fans like Rex... But that the fans will easily grow sick of him if he starts to lose... I'm a believer of Rex from Day 1. And I'm sick of cycling through head coaches and hope the Jets stick with Rex and let him keep doing what he's doing, which I have no doubt plans on happening.
This isnt Mangini in his first year, or even worse someone on Rome is Burning compared this to Herm, and how "we" loved Herm but once we started losing we killed him. Rex knows football, and proved over and over this season that he's a football coach and a damn good one. I'm not turning on Rex, I love every part of him. I believe this is truely the start of something special.
Ok SanchezToEdwards... You want Rex to pipe down and win on the field...And why would you want him to change his style? You're basically saying you want Rex not to be himself and "change" into a regular head coach in this league and provides nothing but cliche answers/persona. If this is who he is, and Woody/Mike T know this, along with his own players who LOVE this guy...Why tell him to be someone he isn't? La'Roi Glover on 1st Take today said Rex is the 5th best head coach in the NFL...Putting him above guys like Fisher, Coughlin, Shanahan, etc. Because around the league to players he speaks with, they WANT to play for Rex Ryan and love how he coaches and bonds with players... ???
i like rex but to say i wud never turn on him is just a lie, like if we are 5-11 next year, or we go 9-7 then 10-6 then 8-8 ext, i want a championship and although he's done a great job so far, me and all of the jet fans will help run his fat ass out of town if we are mediocre/suck for a LONG PERIOD OF TIME,(not 1 or maybe even 2 years, and def not if we are 4-8, i wud say 2yrs in a row missing playoffs) .....but to be clear, i really think rex is going to bring us that ring... i am loyal to the team, not its coach
See that is a load of bullshit right there. Mangini went 10-6 in his first year with a playoff appearance. He was LOVED. He was the Mangenius for turning a 4-12 mess into gold.... Jets fans are INSANELY fairweather. They will turn on Rex just as fast as they did Mangini.... After the Buffalo OT loss there were dozens of threads criticizing Rex. "He can't manage the clock" "His defense chokes in big spots" etc. etc. The answer to the OP's question is obvious.... The majority of the fan base will turn on Rex if we start losing. No fuckin' doubt. This is common knowledge.
One more then I'm off to bed...ihatethedolphins3... You want Cowher if Rex can't get this team over the hump...Let's say it's 4/5 seasons and Rex is on the cusp...Patience is a virtue. Look how it paid off for Cowher and the Steelers when he finally reached the top after losing in a Superbowl and losing like what? 4 AFC Championship games? Look at Tony Dungy in Tampa...He built that team and made it a consistent playoff team, then finally after playoff losses they canned him, they did win a SB but since haven't won a playoff game. Dungy goes onto Indy and luckily for his sake, Peyton and company wanted Dungy to stay. He caught fire from fans and media for not being able to get over the top, and they wanted a change. The Colts believed in their guy they hired and ended up winning a Super Bowl. Point is...patience is a necessity for a guy you believe in and think can get you over the top, no matter what former head coaches are out there.
couldnt agree more, but all fans are the same, if you think your team has elite talent and they underperform, the fans are ganna be pissed off at the coach....heads coaches and QB's share the title of scapegoat 99.999999% with struggling franchises
100% agree. And most answers at this moment are going to be Option 1. Because he's WINNING. To me he has shown the maturation of being a head coach, definitely has room for improvement, but made strides, and most notably when the season, at least to me, was lost... That 4-6 stretch when Rex stepped in and put the color-codes on Sanchez. For a guy all of camp/1st half of season who simply stayed in the defensive meetings because defense is his nature, to come out and go to the offensive meetings and OVERSEE the team since he is the HEAD COACH and offer his opinion/advice to Schotty showed HUGE strides and made me a believer. It took a bad stretch of bad losses and constant turnovers by Sanchez, but thankfully he put his foot down as head coach and drilled it to Sanchez on not turning it over and even bringing in Girardi to show him to slide. Whether Schotty liked it or not, I don't care, this is the F'N guy I want running this team. This is the guy for the Jets. But sadly, like you said, Jets fans will turn on him as they did "Mangenius" if he has a hiccup or two...
Yeah. Not saying the fans are in the wrong for turning on the coach, it's good we demand performance, but you know it will happen as soon as the chips are down. The coach gets too much blame and too much credit a lot of the time.
This isn't a glorified, likable position coach. This isn't an overrated boy wonder who is in over his head. This is a defensive genius who kicks ass and takes names. If he goes 1-3, injuries have to be the reason why. And its going to have to be 3/5 of the OL going down, and half the entire defense for them to go 1-3. I don't see this team faltering like Herm and Mangini's team. The biggest reason why those teams didn't do well is because the QB and OL couldn't stay healthy for consecutive seasons. For once the OL is healthy and has played together for 32 starts, and the new kid is having the knee fixed and looked like he belonged more than Brady did in January. This team has a shot to put winning seasons together for consecutive years.
not yet. They don't understand the brash attitude and they wouldn't tolerate the predictions and guarantees and the chest beating. They think he's a hot head douche. But with more time in the league, NFL fans might soon get how funny it is and respect the fact that the coach believes in his players more than anyone else in the world.
I think as rex gains more experience, he will tone it done a lil bit to the point where it ONLY helps our team, and not distract or put added pressure on. For example if we are late in a season and doin avg-crappy, he will have to eat his words and quiet dow a lil. That said, i love his attitude and his brashness, as long as it doesnt cross the line of idiodic
No I would not turn on Rex. He's a brilliant defensive mind, there's no denying that no matter how you feel about how he carries himself. He is not an egomaniac when it comes to shit that actually matters (he basically gave Schotty full control of the offensive side of the ball until the team was fucking up). He''s a players coach that players love but he's not scared to bring the hammer down on anybody that puts himself in front of the team (see Clowney). That shows me that A) the players will always play hard for him and B) they won't tune him out cus he has no problems making an example of a guy. He benched Kerry Rhodes when he was playing like a cunt and regardless of how you feel about him he played much better. He gets the best out of his players and he's shown a strong ability to put his team in winning situations. Combining all these things show that Rex should not fail as head coach of the New York Jets. Mangini had a lot of success his first year as HC but his shortcomings were masked by the extremely low expectations of the Jets. Once the expectations went up and the team didn't play well it was glaringly obvious he had some serious weaknesses as a head coach that would never be fixed
